Agriculture
In the old countries of Europe, where
]abor is cheap and land dear, the object
to augment labor and contract the
• iiace on which it is employed. There can
not be a more rational principle in the
•ode of agriculture, than that every farm
which is in good heart should be kept so
that every one not in good heart should
ne made so, and that what is right as to the
:atilt generally, is so as to every part of
-very farm. Any system, therefore, or
want of systeth, which tendS• to make a
ieh farm prior, or does not tend to make
poor farm rich cannot . be good for the
, waer. The profit where there is any will
balance the loss of intrinsic value
-astained by the land. The neglect of
~:inures is a great error which claims par
• icular notice. It may be traced to the
-ante eau e with ~our excessive crop
ping. In the early stages of our agricul
:are, it was more convenient and more
profitable to bring new land info cultiva
tion than to improve exhausted lands
Nothing is more certain than that contin
qal cropping without manure deprives the
oil of its fertility, it is equally certain,
that fertility may be preserved or restor
d by giving to the earth animal or vega
:able manure equivolent to the matter ta
ken from it: The Chinese it is said smile
tt the idea that land needs rest, because
industrious use is wade of every • fertili
zing particle that can contribute towards
replat,'Thgkwhat has been drawn from it,
:ind this is the more pra, ticable with
them,i as almost the whole of what is
grown on the farm is consumed within
them. That a restoration to the earth of
all that annually grows on it, prevents
its i upoverishinent, this is sufficiently
seen in our forests, where the annual fo
liage of the . trees and plants, replace the
fertility of which they deprived the earth.
The most eligible mode of preserving the
richness, and of enriching the poverty of
a farm is, certainly that of applying to
the soil a sufficiency of animal and vege
table matter in a putrifi d state in order
to procure which, to much care cannot be
observed in saviu,c, , every material furnish
ed by the farm. This resource Was;among
the earliest discoveries of men living by
agriculture, and a proper "se of has been
made a test of good husbandry in all coun
tries, ancient and modern, where its prin
ciples and profits have been studied. It
is most gratifying to witness such a spirit
agricultural excitement in Cumberland
, aunty. What a pleasure it will afford
to every land holder, if by a proper system
f cultivation he finds his produce annu
ally increasing and his expenees
ditninisL
i in proportion, whilst his estate is con
stantly rising in value. In spring he
casts a cheerful regard around him, buoy
ant with hope while his exulting thoughts
naturally ascend to the bestower of all
gifts In summer he gathers in his har
vest Nit'ith gratitude, for the blessings of a
superintending providence. In autumn,
he applies his acquired knowledge to im
prove upon the proceeding year, and- re
joices that' increasing resources, proyiee
for an increasing family. In the %linter
at his fireside, with concious satisfaction
he hears the tempest howl in vain—his
work is collect 2d to defeat the cold, his
farm supplies every necessary, and when
his cattle are well sheltered and well fed
by his provident care.
TILE CUT AND WIRE WORMS.—The
white grub or cut worm has been very de
structive in my corn-field and also the.
wiro worm. Year before last they came
so thick that I could pick a handful from
the furrow in going four rods. So, soon
after planting and before the corn was.up
I put on every hill about a" gill of ashes,
lime and salt, mixed toge:her the compost
was in proportion a bushel of ashes, a peck
of lime, and four quarts of salt. My
corn came up looking lino, and at first
hoeing scarcely a hill was touched by the
grub. They worked a little after, but did
not destroy ten hills to the acre. If any
are likely to be troubled the present sea
qot‘, I would advise them to try this.—
Rural Xell , l'Orker.
ANOTHER RE MEV FOR THE CORN
GRIJ B.—A writer in the Afichigau
: says that to take a round stick, two
incli'es iu diameteilliointed and with it
maize front two to foilr holes about each
For the Ilernl
HAMPDEN S
I 11 of corn, he found to be completely
'cessful in catching the grub. In
;ring about the hills they fall into Dthe
des, froM which they can neither emerge
r penetrate into the ground, but are
.t to perish which they do in twenty
ir hours. By this mode his corn was
:ed from harm, while bin neighbor's
t over the fence, was badly injured.—
such of his own corn, where the
abs were not thus trapped, suffered
