A New Plan of Cultivation
Since the necessarily of life have be
came so enormously high, :we should take
ho.d of any method that may be brought
to light by which the products of our
lands may bo increased; we therefore
give below, some important experiments
that are calculated to revolution the pres
ant system of farming.
At a public meeting •in London last
winter, Mr. Wilkins, patentee of a new
plan of cultivation, being called upon by
persons deeply interested in his experi
ments, and in agricultural progress gen ;
orally, made a detailed
,staLment of !iis
method and its results.
Ire hoped no one would take alarm at
the 11:11110 of patent, his disposition way
to license at a rate not worth the meanest
and mo. - -t contemptible infringinent. ,
oom nenced with the cottager—say rent
a cottage and garden, £5 ss. a year—one
penny per -annum ; and the. cottager's
wife would soon take things to market.—
His princip:eg was tivoConvey air nod li
quid manure to the roots of plants, etc.
One important part of the means was a
tray bottom, via., watertight bottom and
sides—say sides four inches high, and
other methods on the same principle.
He showed six roots which he sent to
Reading for—two mangel wu-zel, grown
on the patent principle, and two grown
on the old system; also beet-root grown
on the old and the new systenf, Those
on the patent principle, sown in• May,
weighed twelve and fourteen poundsoliele
on the old system about one third the
weight. The crop of mongle-tcurzetvvas
at the rate of sixty nine tons, two, guar
ters, and twenty-two pounds per acre.—
Of peas the produce was about eight fold
in comparison to that obtained from the
soil by ordinary cultivation. C'rrot s
were very large and straight; and of ex
cellent quality.
ITe also exhibited Italian rye grass,
fifth cut first year's sowing, and one cut
only first year's sowing, on the old system
which came to perfection on the old sys
tem. He had also tested 'various seeds
on his system, which came to perfection
on the old system, in dry weather, they
never vegetated, and did not come up. •
Indian. corn was grown to considerable
perfection; while the common mode of
cultivation no ears wore produced. A
geranium grown in a box, flowered con
tinuously ; aad the beauty and perfume
of flowers in general were greatly irnprov- .
ed. These astonishing results were ob
tained in many eases from soil from which
no produce could be obtained by ordinary
cultivation. The-quantity of milk given
cow fed tin the roots grown by a new
process, was fourteen per, cent greattr
than when, under - similar conditions, the
animal was fed on roots of the same kind
iu the ordinary manner, and its buality
was considerable better. The celery was
exceedingly delicate as well as abundant.
Minter broccoli , put into the ground af
ter a very fine crop of potatoes, came . to
perfection ; in six weeks, and was succeed
ed by an excellent crop of Savoy cabbage
—the third oroP from the same soil since
last May. . .
He would shortly exhibit the new va
ses in which flowers. would come to per
faction anywhere; also a portable garden
'moved to the sun from east to west. He
had grown potatoes on the top' of his win
dow (in a flower box) on a slate, the earth
from Workingham o...nution—two sets
produced 108 potatoes; one ash lealkid
ney, in sand from a sand rock, produced
84 potatoes, all free from disease, , spot,
oedefect. He (Mr. W.) would shortly .
give a-lecture, and produce- indisputable
proof with the hemp and flax, potatoes,
roots, etc., at the city .f London Tavern,
he hoped next week, of which ho would
send . , notice •to the Times, Gardner's
;,•Qhrenicle, and some other . papers. His
motto was, "I)4i* . goed and communicate!
In a communication to the Gardner's
Chronicle, Mr. Mechi; of Triptreo
states that in the beds which he inspect
ed at Reading, which had been cultiva
ted on the new method, the excess of
quantity produced over that which wa s
obtained from similar beds sown with
seed from the same parcels, and cultiva
ted in the ordinary manner, was from 400
.600 per cent. Mr. Wilkins' Patent ex
-tends to the United Kingdoms, also to
France and Belgium. . His systeni.as be
fore stated, is to coney_reir and liquid"
manure to the roots ; liquid of the filthi
est description was thus entirely deodo
rized by the unerring lulus of nature.
,Thu apparatus for applying the liquid
manure is simple. A flat water.tight
surface is laid from sixteen to twenty
inches below- the top of the soil. it is
laid in widths of five feet, with perpen
dicular edges four inches high, and may
be of any desired length. There should
be a gentle inclination from end to end,
„tnd from side tq side this tray bottom
.1,- - should be level. Along this are laid two
drains at equal distances from the centre
and from the sides, formed by half drain
pipes of burned clay, placed end to end,
the open side downward. The rows of
vegetables, etc. are placed over these
drains. The liquid manure is introduced
in these drains by means of a perpendic
ular tube at One end, and escapes under
the open edges and between the junctions
of the Pipes, until the soil is moistened to
a sufficient height ; and this is ascertain
ed by looking into another tube open be
' low, in which the fluid rises to the height
to which it has risen in the earth. An
other perpendicular tube with a plug be
low passes through • the
.water-tight sur
face, by means of which, by raising the
plug, any excess of moisture may be let
.dr when requisite. ft is found that the
penetration of air under . the roots of
the plants by means of the drains, when
the liquid has passed out of them, is ex
tremely beneficial to the growth of the
plants. Mr. Wilkitis calculated that by.
this alone their growth was accelerated
two days in sevan. The same principle
is applied to flower-box - es and flower-puts,
.ind he oxhibitcd represen'atione of sever
d which were exceedingly Ornamental.—
ft is found that the crops groWn by this
Method are free from the "grub worn],"
tften so extensively destructive,and which
is introduced into the soil with the solid
manure. ~-,'
