DIOSCORIA JAPONICA,
A JAPANESE VEGETABLE OBOWLNO IN NEW YORK
Yesterday • afternoon, says the , New
York livening Post, we visited the nursery
of Mr. D. 8011, at the corner of Fifteenth
street,. and Broadway, • Ile occupies an
acre and a half of ground, upon which is
erected a number of hot houses. At the
present time he has quite a variety of
plants in bloom, among which are the
Camellia Japonica. On account of the
very backward spring he has only just
begun to prepare his garden for the sum
mer season. The great curiosity of this
nursery, however, is the Diuseoria Ja
ponica' a vegetable with tuberous roots,
which he received from Paris. Be in
forms us that he saw this vegetable grow
ing in France last summer. lie was of
the opinii n that it could be cultivated in
this country, and directed a quantity of
the roots to be sent to him to New York.
About four weeks ago he planted fifteen
or eighteen in pots in his hot house, and
they have already grown to the height of
six inches:- The stem has an ordinary
looking leaf upon it.
As soon as the plant is large enough
Mr. 801 l intends to transplant it to the
garden, where it will grow in the open
air. Proin present appearance, the Dios
coria looks as if it would thrive iied
mature by next fall. In the event of
success, the roots will be disposed of for
cultivation throughout the country. Ap
plications have recently been made to the
nursery man for roots, but he has decided
nit to part with any until he is satisfied
that they can he raised.
Mr. 801 l says of the Dioscoria Japonica
and its cultivation;
"The introduction of this excellent
vegetable into France and the United
States, and its cultivation as far as known,
is worthy the attention of all. The Dios
coria is destined, by its delicious taste
and great productiveness, to replace, in a
great measure, the potato. It is a native
of Japan, and is cultivated there and in
the north of China in great quantities,
and is feasted upon by rich and poor the
year round. 'This remarkable vegetable
was introduced in' France in the year
119, by M. 31autcprey, the French (';gin_
so! in China. It was given him by a
missionary. Nl. Mauteprey sent it to the
,I:ardin des Plants, where it remained
unnoticed (as it did not flower) until his
return to birance in 1853, when he was
perfectly astonished to find so invaluable
an article still uncultivated, and not, iii
all the markets of France. A friend of
mine, M. Palliet, being acquainted with
M. Mauteprey, and hearing him describe
its great -merit, set to work in good
earnest, and propagated between 50,000
and 60,000 the first year, and is now pre
paring to cultivate it in all The depart
ments of France. Some of the roots
were sent last June-to the Horticultural
Exhibition in Paris, and gained for M.
Palliet the award for the introduction of
the most . iiseful plant, beside the Minis/re
(te AgricultUre presented him with three
thousand francs. Some of the roots,
weighing two pounds and a half apiece, •
were presented to the Emperor and
Court, and pronounced excellent. M.
Palliet. afterwards received an order for
forty thousand to be distributed through
out. France.
"The cultivation of the Dioscoria is
very simple, not requirin....so much labor
As • the potato. It will ~do well in any
soil, but light or sandy is preferred, as
they will .be more mealy than when raised
in heavy bottomed lands 'The roots are
eitt two niches long and planted ten or
twelve inches apart, in rows ' and kept
clean or weeds until ready to dig, which
till be in actober and November. If
loft in the ground two years' it will go on
increasing and improving in quality. If
kept, dry they will keep eight and ten
montlii.out of the ground which will be
a groat advantage, especially for shipping
purposes. It is estimated that Dioscoria
will exceed any other produce: It 111:7
be' remarked here, that the inner part is
a fini):white very mealy—very agreeable
to,.the taste, resembling arrow root—and
is. Booked. in ten minutes. Its growth
nardinitward• appearance resemble the
swift potato,_ and there is no doubt
_it will
bd-cUltivatdd more extensively thin that
excellent vegetable, as, it possesses the
advantage of being hardy, and of being
kept a much 16nger time."
Lime on Corn.
Mr. R. F. Bingham; of Ohio, corn
i4unicates to the Southern •Cultivator,
the following experiment ho made with
lithe upon yourg corn :
-jun conclued-an--experiment
with lime on a field of corn, which may
be worthy of notice. As the corn was
comin< , up, I applied about half a pint
of slake 1 lime to each hill, with the ex
ception of foie• rows near the middle of
the field, 'which were left that I might
, ce whether or no liming in the hill was
beneficial to the crop. The after "treat
ment was the same during the season.—
I farvested separately the four 'rows un
litned also adjoining the four that
were hmed, (soil. and situation being
precisely the same) an ,1 the resillt was
an increase of a little over one-eight in
the amount, in corn in favor of that
which was limed.
How to Make Guano.
Save the manure from your hen-roost.
1 bushel of hen manure;
4 quarts of plaster;
4 " of ashes;
• 2 " of hay salt;
and mix it well together. Now is the
time to do it. This is equal to any
guano ever transported over the big
waters. Try it and satisfy yourself,
and it will save a great expense to
farmers.
