From the Country Gentleman SHALL POTATOES FOR SEED. Mr. T. C. Alvord of Wilmington, Ver mont, says : " SUMO eighLyears since, at the time of planting my potatoes, I came short of seed to plant. Previous to this time, I had used large whole potatoes, or the seed en& cut oft, for seed, and supposed tlnit no (glair would answer. I resolved to try the exper iment of planting small potatoes ; the larg est being about the size of common plums, but the most of them being smaller. I car ried several bushels of these little things to the field, and commenced planting them, putting two to foul in a hill. '' The potatoes in the different parts of the field came u-p_fit the :MUM time, but the vines front the small potatoes were not as large anihthrilty as those from the larger ones. At the first hoeing, thrre was some difforence in the tops, but after that the tops from the small potatoes looked folly as well as say of the field, and continued thro' the season. ' When I came to dig them, I found the potatoes, where the small . seed w is planted, to be as good, in`vvery respect, as those-where-Ulu-large potatoesavero-plant ed. There were as many in the ldll, and th • pa does wi Fc as large, and willi small ones, as those fret]) the large seed. ni• of the formers in this vicinity, after seeing ihe experiment fairly tried, are using small p.,t,itnes for seed. This winter I have had several applications from deal ers in 1411 lathes for seed, who inform use that the farmers whom they purchase from are generally adopting the way •of using small potatoes for seed. Is There no Danger of Over-Farming. TOLEDO, Feb." 26, 185.1 It is with regret I notice the general voice of the influential eastern press urging a re moval from city and town to the country for the purpose of growing more food and bringing down its price. Is such advice needed at this time 1 The crop of grain was cut short last year by drought to the extent of at least one hundred millions of bushels; an ordinary crop amounting to about nine hitndrod millions. This, with the European war, sufficiently accounts lir high prices withoid charging them on the lack of culti vators. There is no such• tack. One' year with another, the prices of Cu•na produce are scarcely more thawbarely remunerative.— For the last dozen years, taken altogether, farming has received less compensation for its labor and capital than any other ;mat occupation. The last year is exceptional. With ordinary caroms this year, prices Will 001110 down to a moderate remuneration. Without being urged, too many men will fly to evils th it they know not of, rather than bear the ills they sillfer.iti the city.— Thousan is of laborers, last year Cllgaged on the hundreds of railway lines now deserted, will necessarily swell tho army of milli va t it's to ,111 unwonted si,ze. The high prices of this year will assuredly cause more exten sion and thorough cultivation, promising an extraordinary production. The crisis we are in is something like that of 1537 and 1812-3, but it (litters in many more points than it agrees with those riods of :dam and short currency. Thou sands of mechanics and others who left the towns and went into firming in 'lB3O, "were glad to return utter years of unaccustomed `` toil, to town life and their trades, there to 'meet 'competitors, who, by hohling on at their posts, had greatly . the advantage in property anti position. Thu derangement of our monetary tatirs has tlistrranged thous old ways the in dustri ti operations of the country. This is not to be cured b 5 a general rush into the country to cultivate the soil. Order will sooner lie restored by every man standing in his :wetistoined place, and world tug at his accustomed occupation. Oni• people: .* are too prone to change—to run after wild lands, im tgining that qu trter-seetions are farms, whereas they lire 00 more farms than a tree is a hureau. The low price of I Ind is a p,:rp.tual premium and temptation. Add ed to this is the natural desire to hold do minion i'tver the soil.- Be assured tlrat there is nu n.ted of urging men other occupa tions to hecothe farmers. With two hundred and fifty millions of specie in the country, and with mechanical hparom e nts Of labor greatly increased dur ing the past, row years, with no diminution of industrial habits 'of our people, there semis no reason why confidence should not be speedily restored, and the various em ployments of men go on properly in their accustomed channel. The past, winter has been ftvorahle for the ‘rhent crop. An ex. , 'ordinary breadth of land - ,i‘'lll be planted. next ?living with Indian corn—the most certain of all grain crops.' Moro. than ordi nary cure and industry will be put forth in the production of the crops of the coining Summer. • Lyt those considerations have their due weight . avilen yon-Wirite for your large parish on this subject. He fed troth two ounces.to a quar ter of a pint daily, with good results ; but when larger quantities were used_ the fat becune yellow, and the flesh tasted ;fishy. He states tjtat when sheep were fed once a (lay, the fat was beautifully white, and-the flesh light and easy of digestion, and gave general satisfaction to the consumers. The experiments with bullocks have been equal ly satisfactory. Ile feeds the bullocks with oil mixed up with meal and chaff; the pigs have it mixed with dry meal l the sheep split beans soaked in oil. The commonest oil costs in England •about seventy-five cents .per gallon, arid the saving of expense is very considerable. Dr. Pollock also says that, the relief to a wind-broken horse from the administation of cod liver oil is very soon perceptible. Whether these experi mcnts arc of any practical value to farmers in this country or not they are interesting, inasmuch as they show the importance of studying the application and• physiological action of different food 'and oils in the ani mal system.
