El 21gritaltural. 914., g ; m.c .4. • • Poland Oats. E. S. Hayward, of Brighton, N. Y. hasJaised this variety of oats the past year, and says they are all they arc cracked up to be. Be sowed two acre part, white and part black. • Ile says: About the Oth of May last I sawed twt acres of good soil 'with six bushels 0: seed. The ground was well ploughed in the fall, and-cultivated with a wheel cultivator, worked by a yoke of cattle and a span of horses together, before sow 'fag in the spring. The cultivator was put in as deep as it would work without elo2-gipg. • The oat were then sown and harrowed in. They ealite up very nicely. and each kind grew nearly alike till tin heads begin to show. The wh *te headed was out four or live days in advance of the other. The. Mark ones grew Vtsrt rank, and looked black ; the straw of the bein , tiuch liolite - st. cid - . ored. • They both grew -very. ..rank, - and emfideutly expected 75 or SO bushels per acre, and thought if any oats yiehl u d a hundred they would. 'But I was di, appointed. The dry weather I ass4ln the cause. last rain was the end of June or the" first of July, and thi: weather afterwards beine-"titremely hat, they ripened prematurely, causing them to weigh much lighter than 1. think the would had the weather been more favor able. The white ones were harvestek: with the sickle the 20th of July, and the black the Ist of August. I sowed two bushels of the white, and four (it' the and when threshed had 40 bush els of white, weighing;s lbs. per bmhe. and nearly 15 bushels of the bade. 'I he weight of the black ones 1 do not know exactly, but 1 think thirty two or three lbs. per bushel. The seed of the white ones neighed about 40 lbs. and the black 30 or 37 lbs. bushel. 1 think in a good season the above weights may be fully realized. The black ones had much tht longest heads, but the berry was much smaller and the straw heavier, being les-- apt ti lodge than the common oats. The straw of the white ones is finer and light colored, and t berry large. To eep Celery • `Celery should be taken from the trench., es before the ground freezes hard. if to be kept in a cellar, it should be one kept not much warmer than just above A o lie .freezing point. Make a ridge of 'earth on one side of the Cellar, next to the wall, on au angle of forty-five degrees. Then proceed to lay the celery close together M. a row. Place about an inch of dirt over the layer of celery, and then another layer, and , continue until all is snugly stowed away. There should be a sum cient quantity of dirt to keep the root:, and stalks from touching each other. It may be taken out at any time during the winter. It maybe 'kept in the open ground by placing over the celery suffi cient straw or corase manure to keep it from the frost.
