The Practice among farmers orpermitting
grass to stand in most cases until the seeds ,
are formed, and not unfrequently until they
are, ripe, is so 'general that it seems almost
hilly to call'in question itanorreetness; btit it
Is so manifestly at Variance with reason and
@Malogy, and when the experience of those who
bait - thoroughly tested the merits of surly and
late cut bay, that 'ft May be worth an effort to
arrest the popular. custom. •
'Science has long since incontestably demon-•
ideated that plants arriving at maturity'have
large quantities of their starch, sugar and gum .
-their most peutritive elements—converted
into wooden fibte, with comparitively very
little nutriment.
• Experience has proved that cattle will thrive
on hay out before the seeds vie formed, while
the same cattle when fed on Ikt,g - Agr quantities
oldie same kind of hay, but cut after the seeds
were ripe required the addition of grain 'to
keep them up.'
•
Again: When the expe'rimente of making
sugar from corn stalks were being tried some
yeari ago, it was found that to retain the each
:trine matter in the stalks, the oar shoots bOd
to be stripped off.os soon as they. made their
appearance, or they became worthless, The
moment the ears or seeds commenced forming,
the starch, guns and sugar left the stalk and
became consentrated in the grain, and of coerso
the stalks to the sugar maker are worthless.
This observation and reason has taught man.
The instinct of. animals—nn ' unerring
guide as to , what is best suited to their wants
—leads them to prefer the early to the late cut
bay, as (teri observing farmer is aware. Even
wean in pasture they invariably leave the ripe
stalks and eat only the younger shoots, althouh
they may have to pick it blade by blade, and
are compelled to be constantly feeding to get .
ts sufficient quantity, while the ripe grass
stands thick, affording abundance in quantity.
The proper time to cut grass, I repeat, is
when the bead begins to blooin. It will not
make as much hay, but an acre thus dut is
more nutritious, and will po much farther in
keeping stook limn- if left for the seeds to ri
pen. Any one who will try this experiment
will never again leave it to ripen, although by
so doing he may save himself some trouble in
the making. J. G. ;:

(IEO{3I'IIOOP, Judge of the District Court in
Perry C'tionty, Pa., Nov. 18th, 1852 said: "your
.floofland'sGsrman Bitters' has been in use in
our place over a year past, and to the astonish
ment of many has performed wonders. We
may notice a few instances that have crime
under own immediate notice:—almost every
person who hue stopped at the hotel of Win.
Lackey, one year since, predicted irom his e
maciated countenance and debiLty, Out he
could not live much longer. lie was unable
to attend to his buiriess, and for the greater
part of the time confined to his room. We rec.
ommended him to try the German Bitters; he
did, and to the surprise of all his friends lie is
now able to attend to his usual busineita'..and
perform manual labor. The case . of Henry
Asper a stone mason, whom no one supposed
would ever recover from the debility of his
system, but was looked upon as fast approach
Mg the grave, took eight or nine bottles of the
Bitters during the lust winter, and this sum.
mar he bus been Ito the. surprise of all who
knew his casej.following Ids trade. Tlie case
of 'William Murphy is no lessasionishing.—
He too was so fur reduced as to induce the
r
- genern belief that the grave alone would be
his only remedy. Mr. Lackey recommended
him to tEy the Hoofland's German Bitters; lie
ie now apparently a well man, and able to do
a hard day's work. We could mention many
other eases of a similar .character, if it were
necessary. I myself derived much benefit from
their use. I hi.yc give n considerable of it a
way, not for your berm& alone, but lq relieve
suffering humanity, and let ine assure you 1
am pleased to see the happy result. To the
afflicted we say, try them fairly and 1 will
warrant relief."
These Bitters aro worthy the attention of
ii.velids, possessing great power. in. the rents
ration'ef a healthy action of the liver and the
lesser glands, giving tone to the stomach and
nervous system, and bringing the system gen
orally to a high state e, health.

community in which I reside, long before the

The First Tyal.—l had myself suffered oc

a great variety of curative agents to but little
purpose ; and suffering.from this disease (dinr

Syrup first upon myself. The results were be
yond my expectations. It was a powerful
alterative, and_the marbly' action of the system
was changed, and the functions of secretion
were restored to a healthy_state. It gave tone
and elasticity to my system, and correptcd the
derangement of the digestive organs, and gave
me that inestimable blessing—health. This
test was not determined in u week, or a month;

Other Tests.—Fititlind this medicine so use

solicited to give advice in reference to a child,
some eight years of ago. This child was

The humor resembled black specks of mortified

when she had sufficient strength to go oat to
