CULTIVATION' OF POTATOES
The old practice of hilling up corn
and potatoes, is discarded by the best
-Cultivators. Still there are some who
yet cling t o the old waysthat might be of
.benefit in a wet and hurmtd climate
•where a necessity exists for the plants up
'out-of a superabundarit moisture. But
is a climate like ours, where long con
tinued droughts parch up the earth as
°they frequently do in many sections, the
hat culture, with planting on or below
the surface, is the better plan. Wh;re
the soil is-well underdrained and subsoil
ed, potatoes planted below the surface.
,;''Without any hilling, succeeds the best.
In such situatims the ;superabundance
of rain passes down =through the earth
leaving its amnionia and other fertilizing
principles for the benefit of the growing
plants, while , in the dryest weather the
roots of the plants 'search . ' their food so
deeply in the generous soil that they
leap in a vigorous condition'.

casionally with sudden attacks of Sick [lead=

a great variety of ehritive agents to but little
purpose; and suffering from this disease (diar.

Were restored to al:saltily state. It gave tone

Other Tests.—Finding this medicine so use.:

solicited to give advice in reference to a child,
some eight years, of age. This child was
severely afflicted with a Scrofula humor, of•
very severe type, the IniMor showing itself on
all parts of the surface. and then soddenly dis
appearing. The child was very sick, and it
was thought doubtful whether she would live,
.The humor resembled black specks of mortified

all.hea ling, and I gave him the result of its
operations in several' instances. I, stated in
that letter that .• i t was invaluable as a 'remedy
in Cutaneous Eruptions, Erysipelas, Salt
Rheum, and other disorders, included in'the
Varied family of diseases known ust Scrofula,
4.4t.c.: that in Dyspepsia it acted with wonder
ful efficacy." My opinion of its value for the
above named diseases, remain unchanged, bitch
the same.as.when I wrote Mr Myers in obtir
1850. Ido not recommend it for all' the ills
of our suffering humanity ; but I unhesitating
ly -say, that as a-remedy for Scrofulous affec
tions I believe itlirlperior to any known cura
tive agent. '
It has been sufficiently tested by domestic
practice to establish its adoption to extensive
usefulness in mitigating human suffering and
removing diseases.
