We , • have equally •faverablo accounts as the- 'following of the Pennock Coin Drill; from Several of our Chester county 'friends, who gave it a thorough t ri al this spring. -The advantages of drillMg in corn are. so Manifest, that this implement must soon come into general use. Mn. EEITOR was tempted, by the notice in your Aprilnumber to purchase ono of Pennock's new Corn and its pgrformance. has ,givert_such, , entire satisfaction, satisfaCtion, and.so grittily 'exceedel my expectations, that I (eel- it .a duty I owe the farming .community to call their at tention to this impleuient, that they may take advantage of it another season. have long been of the opinion that drilling in 'corn suporcede all other modes, of planting, as soon as a •real good drill is within the roach of every farmer at .a moderate price. ' And I do pronounce the Pennock corn planter a real good one though not perfect, as I can suggest what in my opinion, would be anAmprovement, to wit :• to arrange it so as to drop regularly and Without fail, one grain ono foot apart. This dis`tance ivtll allow more 'stalks. On the ground without being too close, than any other inede Of planting. The Pennock planter, as now contracted, drops two to six grains every eighteen or-thirty-six inches, as the op erator may desire. I prefer the former distance, and. /, now have aihandsonie and evenly planted fields , of corn as the State of Delaware has everlireiduced.— When ray corn'first'canieUp 4( averaged over three grains to the .hill-none too many perhaps, at first, as is..safe.st to make a liberal allowance for birds and worms. At the second dressing, I weed ed it out to two stalks, allowing the most healthful and vigorous to remain. ome of the advantages of drilling in' corn are these • , Ist. Ecomoray.-1 have over thirty acrh in corn this spring; one man and a bo,y to ridelh&herse, drilled it in three days. It being our first attempt at using a drill, we lost half a day in in extiUri morning, arid !'getting our hand in. '— Next season I will guarantee to put in thirty acres of corn in. handsome style with the same drill, in, less than two and a half days. To plant the stn: ground in the, ordinary way would keep the man and boy busy enough during ten-days, at least. Here then, besides the time gained for attending to other w,ork, is a saving of the whole labor of planting, in the ordinary way; as you will plant the thirty acres with a drill in just the time required to tt mark out" the ground before dropping the corn by hand. 24. The corn is better put in, if I may use the phrase, in every respect. It is planted at a uniform' depth, and therefore comes up evenly. The grains are drop ped sufficiently close togethet, and the hills are in straight iines, and can be cul- tivated to better advantage. I can run ;my harrow teeth . as . lose as I please, to every stalk in every hill in the field.— Every farmer knows the trouble of her. rowing when dropped in theusual zigzag style of careless and tired boys. 3d. The corn is not so,easily washed out of the ground by floods, as when planted In marked out farm vs. One of my " fields is on quite a hillside, and though a heavy rain came on soon after it was planted. it required one man but a couple of hours to repair the damages, while my neighbor's corn in , the next field was so much washed up, as to re. quire several men a whole day to replant it. 9th. The birds are not so destructive to drilled corn as when planted by hand. It is a singular fact that the crows and blackbirds would war:der ever my fields searching for the hills, apparently taking no notice of the young corn peeping thro' the level ground. In a few spots where tlotooramos oat_off_by_ivorms And replanted they would invariably find it and pull it out. They seemed to think that-Unless tho cora was in hillooks it was not genuine, or worth pulling up. Whether they will "progress" with' the ago, and discover that corn is corn, 'whether planted by hand or by drill, romaine to be seen. ether advantages might be named, Mr Editor, but I have trespassed enough up on your Columns already, I Will close with the prediction', that in few years every good farmer will as soon think of doing withoutsa plow as without a corn drill. • A DELAWARE FARMER New Castle county, Jurie 18. xIIR sivsunaNcE.
