tanCe tti accomplishing this purpose. '
The first great . object in,all farming, is,
of course - , to , obtain from a given quanti
ti of . land; the 'largest' product with the
least'outlay or consumption of capital.-.--
To secu re , this result,' tile following points
should be attended to : • , .
1. The land must be in such'conditton
as to' adtnit'of working! et all 'times, or
nearly so, so that- men and tears may
not be standing idle.-imwrifiting- for the .
land to accquire a suitable degree of iliy 7
ness. Hence; if naturally wet, it must
be well under-drained. ' ' '
2. Its condition should. he such as to
admit of the application of manure to a
good advantage, by . thorough intermix
ture and otherwise—and not to render it
useless.by - bincr enveloped with water
it ivatersoalctur earth. '
3. A. 'Aigh.degree of fertility should be
n °lnto .ned—as the same labor -in that
' c,.se will yield Et' larger result. . •
4. A thorough eradication of weds
an.l their sieds, will save much , sttbse
1-ront labor in contending against them,
os well as save much of the 'fertility of
the -soil 'from Wasting •in their Useless
gro th.
• 5: A saving,of the materialsof manure
shOtild , bo carefully attended to. as one
half at least of the solid and lignid por
tions are usually . ' wasted by. a neglect to
.provide absorbentS or reservoirs.
6. Selecting crops, and selecting a pro
per: proportion of each, -is of the highest
consequence.. The market value of one
crop, may be - higher than that of another,
but if it draws 'hard on the strength of the'
soil, or casts much labor, or if the labor
required be at a - time when there are, oth
er,important drafts upon it, such a crop
.should not be alien repeated.
:...I..tvery thing should be dune as cheap.
:ly -as possible,-for-which-purpose-crops
should be arranged so as to distribute the
labor equally 'through the year, that me.'
and teams may noVhe idle at one perioa,,
and hardly driven at antaher,or in other
words, that, too much business may not
"at timetvaCcumulate for its thorough corn 7
pletion in seascin. It freuptly happens
that • the.difference betwWn profit and
loss depends on this alone.,
Nothing is more..iinpoitantthan the_
distribution el cropS in a motion, ns they
exhaust the soil differently, or whet one
takes. Treat-the .land, another. leaves ;
betide the great variety,of farm products,
the , monk:perfectly the balance will be
'maintained 'in thesoil. - , For - examp.e,
wheat, barley and oats, are regarded as
silica plan:s, or those which consume
more largely the soluble flinty porfions.;
peas, beans, and clover, are little plants!
potatoes and turnips are potash plants;
these different classes should be distrib
uted-'
so as to Preierve, the ingredients
" ,, bf the ,soil, if` we may use the term, in
equilibrium.. To preserve, also, .a clean
state otr-land, sowed and hoed. crops
should be alternated with each other.
9. A system comprising a proper in•
termixtu re of tillage and grass crops and
raising domestic animals, should be care
fully made out and adopted. Grain crops
often afford. the highest immediate profit,
but domestic animals serve Lila indispen
'sable purpose of - supplying . manure ;
hence, in estimating the profit of raising
and fattening. cattle, sheep and sivine,
the very impbrtant means they, serve in
providing pabulum for, tillage crops,
should be carefully token into account, a
thing too often thrown entirely:out of the
question:'• •
We briefly mention . these different
points in successful farming, not as any•
thing new, but for the purpose of recal
ling the attention of farmers, who, by
careful observation and accurate recOrcfs,
can'arrange the details of adjuitiag their
own operations, better than by pny par
