We record thu result of yesterday's contest

Theidefet of si• E. .111114S ' TOINI, 1110 noblest
champion of its principles that the Whig party
'ever had; is a result for which we have no lan-
guago to express our profound sorrow. We
looked with well-grounded confidence for a
Geller result—we felt certain that an adminis-
Walton so devoted to the welfare of Pennsylva
nia, and seLtLeyelleial,lCAhe interests of the
people, would be sustained by the popular suf.
fragcs—but,We have been painfully disappoint
ed. If the returns from Philadelphia "-and o
ther counties which have reached ux are en in
dex of the general result, Witt. Mecca ixelect

Lion! seems to Lie the voice of the ballot-box
On the other hand, the brilliant snecess of
Judge, WATTS and the Independent Judicial
ticket in this county, affords cause for an equal
'degree oflfeartfeltp re
leasu. That is
umph of the People? It is their testimony,
whose candidate he was without party distinc
tion, to his eminent character as a citizen and
and a 'Judge. It is the triumph of the ' Judi
ciaiy over party polities : : It is a precedent for
after times in favor of an Independent Junicia
ry. In this view it is a most important resurt:
In Mr. Graham Judge Watts liud a •competitor
capable of polling his whole Party vote in a
mere party contest. In his failure to do so we
see how careful has been the discrimination of
voters. • Messrs.'WOODBURN and RUTZ' am
probably elected 'Associate' Judges, bi a ma- .
jority as large, if not larger, than that cast for
Judge Watts. Out: is a democrat and the o- i

. Our Whig County Ticket, or a large portion
- of 'it., we have reason to believe is eleethd.— 1
Our opponents concede the election of Messrs. I
Cobean, Sponslor and Zinn, (Whigs) for coon-'
ty offices, and R. 111: Ilenderson to the Legis
lature. Mr: Bonham is possibly elected also
IV a very smalf Majority, but this in by no
means certain. The official returns we hope'l
will show the election of both Messrs. Ilender- '
son'and Cathcart, Whigs. The election of Mr.
Martin, lobo, as Cleric of the Courts, i, claimed
by his friends. We were not able t 5 collect
'rellabla returns of the eandidalOs or the coati
tl ticket, before going to press, and therefore
,give the 'opinfobs Of our opponents as we have
heard them expressed. , . .
We have the following returns from the dif

generally for aid, and , earnestly solicited the
co-operation of the local societies in Conaher

than respond to the call ; ,timid through the ef
forts of sonic of-the members thestun of fif
ty dollars and twenty -five -cents 'was raised,-
and paid -owed Mat May to the Treasurer of
the Cumberland County Society. That work
has gone on during the summer, and. the -re
port of the agent May soon in expeCted.
This Society having assigned to it the bor
ough of Carlisle to explore and supply, re
port that at the loft visitation, they found fif
ty ill livilluals deltitute, awl distributed fifty
two Bibles. It is contemplated again to visit
each family, that the exploration and supply
of the whole county may be completed and
finished this fall.
It is satisfactory in looking back to the past
tojnal that this society continued its contribu
tions to . the parent society during a period
when the other societies of the county had
suspended these operations. Note we have a
number of coadjutors whom we trust will
neither tire nor faint when the work of the
Lord is to be done.-
Some years age we had to deplore the loss,
-of -one-of our-most efficient-menihers; who-did
not shrink from any duty in the Bible cause.—
She has now gone to her reward. Another of
the °Mears of the society to 'whose exertions
this "society owes much, has left this port of
the county, and there is need of some devottA

Who among our ladies will atop forward and
give their time and labor perseveringly in this
behalf? - The prosperity perhaps the existence
of the society depends on. such fouted.-:
