rnE PIOTiIER,S LAST LESSON
oWill you please teach me - my--verse, mom.
. ma, and then kiss ma, and bid ins good night?"
said little 'Roger as ho opened the
door and peeped cautiously into the chamber
of his sick mother: lam very sleepy and no
one has heard me say my prayers.' '
Mrs. L was very ill--.‘indeed her at
tendante believed her to be dying. She sat
propped up with pillows, and struggling for
-brolittr; — her lips were whito, - Ifer eyes Tcere
growing (lull and glazed„ She was a widow
and little Roger was her only—her darling
child. Every night lie Lad been in the habit
of coining into her room and sitting in her
lap, or kneeling by her side, whilst she re-
Pentad passages from God's holy word, or re
lated-to 'him stories of wise and good, men
,spokeit Ofin its pages.
"hush I" said a lady who was - watching be
side her couch. "]"our clear mother is too ill
to hoar you to-night." Alk.she said this, she
came. forward, and laid her hand gently' upon
itis arnt,__as if she wonid_lead_him from-the
. room. Roger began to sob as if his heart
wrood break:
' "I cannot go to bed without spying my
, prayers—indeed Fcannot."
The ear of the dying mother caught; ,the
sound. Although she had been nearly bison
- siblo to everything transpiring around her,
the sob of lief darling aroused her stupor, and
turning to a friend -she desired' her to bring
- her little son'and lay him on-her bosom. Her
request __was granted, and - the_ child's rosy
cheek and golden hair nestled beside the cold
face of his dying mother. -
"Roger, my son, my darling child," said
the dying woman,--"repent this verkafter me;
and never, never forget it—' when my father
and mother forsake me, the Lord will-take mo
up.' The child repeated it two or three times
distinctly r and Said his littloprayer.= - Tlrelnie
kissed thvord, almost rigid feature's -before
him, and wont quietly to his couch. The next
- morning he sought, as usual, his mother, but
ho found her still' and cold.
This was - her last lesson. lie has novor for
gotten it—he probably uover will. He has
grown to,,be is man—a good man, and now oc
cupies a post of honor and profit in Alassachu
. setts. I never could look upou hint without
thlnking about-the faith so- beautifully exhibi
ted by his dying mother.
DEATH IS SILENT
In the city while men are
,brawling in the
crowded streets, death IS, entering the secret
chambers, and friends sit pallid by the couches
of the breathless, or love is drinking in the
sigh which bears the soul to heaven. ; Death is
silent; those whose every look spoke to us In
life, pass from our sight as the shadow from
the dial, and the music of their words become
;ad echoes in the distance of our memory. L-math
math is silent. Tempests shriek madly upon
thencean, and many are they who sink with
'this requiem into their fathomless grave; but
from the depths of that sunshine sepulchre no
sound.comes back to tell of those who peri
qhcd. Death is s ilent, yet not to entirely; si
lent it is to the qir, but not always to the
heart. Our brethren aro stillhound to us, and
though dead, they have not ceased to be.—
There is much to bo felt_ and learned where
they rest.
Humility has instruction from the proud
man's monument, and . contentment a lesson
from the vanity that overlies his clay. There
is pathos in solitude where the stranger sleeps;
there is mute ,eloquence inhis unlettered grave;
there is beauty in the poor man's epitaph, in
scribed honestly by affection; there is sublim
ity in thorudo sepulchre of the peasant's tomb,
when it is an effort to symbolize an immortal
faith. And it is snob faith which takes lerror
from the power of death, and despair from the
silence of the glove, That which belongs to
earth must go to earth, and- when earth claims
-and gets back its atoms, God gathers up 'and
calls home his spirit.—Res.
