The Stave Trial

rhe case of Oliver vs. Kauffman, Wealc
ley and' Breckbill, of this county, on
trial in the U.'S. Court for the Eastern
District of Pennsylvania, for the alled-
ged aiding dn the escape of fugitive
slaves belonging to the plaintiffs, residing
in Maryland, terminated on Thursday
last. The jary was unable to agree and
were discharged. The council in the
case were Messrs C: B. Penrose and
~ n ry M. Watts, Esqrs, for the plain
jl and Messrs. Thaddeus Stevens '
add. W. B. Reed, Esgre. for the defen- '

j The :iildress of Mr. Stevens to the jury was
of a strong anti-slavery character. He encour
aged the slate to abvecnid from his master, and
justified those who assist in secreting hirn. His
address was a splendid effort of bitter invective
and inert imcot. Ho denounced the compro
tnises of the constitution an °hateful compro.

A correspondent of the Philadelphia
Sun asserts,- however, that the report of

all night, came into Court and stated that

they had 'not been able to agree upon a
verdiCt :
Judge i4it r remarked that he was very sorry
for it, and said, that ho thofight lie would Itavo
to send them back to their room again. He aid
not wish to punish a. portion of the jury for
what might be considered the flail of another
/portion. This course had more than once pro
duced a verdict, where it had been supposed
that no verdict could have been agreed upon. •

Judge Grier said he did not like to establish

The jury were accordingly dischar
ge,dr-The papers report that they stood
ten for finding a verdict in favor of the
plaintiff and two against it. We learn
from persons who were present, • howei:
er, that the jury stood nine to three. Mr.-
Palreer, the spokesman of the jury, is
a proininenj democrat of Schuylkill
county.
