THE SEASON.—OId Winter left us with
a. smiling sunshiny face and bland tem
per, while Spring has come .in as a, hon
rampant. 'rhe first day of Marct was
furiously blustry, and 'Mee then we
have had four inches of snow. It is
rather singular, by the way, that every
snow we have had this winter fell on
Sunday.
Bi 7•We learn from the Chambersburg
Sentinel, that Prof. TIFFANY, of Dickin
son College, delivered the second of a
course of Lectures before an astociation
in that place, on l'hursda t y, evening latt.
The Sentinel notices the lecture as "a
very able and brilliant affair."
Major E. S. EGE, who is a poet "and
nothin' else," delivered a lecture on
" Poetry" before a large and fashionable
audience in garrisburg, on Saturday eve
ning, the 23d ult. The papers there all
give him "first-rate notices." We take
the subjoined from the Telegraph :
"We were so fortunate as to hear the lec
ture oh "Poetry," delivered at the Shakspeare
Saloon on last Saturday evening, by Edward
Stiles Ego, Esq., of Carlisle. Mr. E. though
still a very young man Is a ripe scholar. His
lecture was eminently chaste, classic and beau
tiful, and did full justice to his noble theme.—
His glowing tribute-to—that—glorious-work—of
creation, woman, hi■ eulogy of Shelley, the
gifted and persecuted eon of genius, and his
vivid and graphic comparison betweeit the wri
tings of the passion-impelled Byron and those
of the intellectually ideal "lord of lute and lay"
were gems touchingly beautiful. We are glad
to join with one so distinguished as N. P. Wit
lis in predicting for Mr. Ego a brilliant career
.on the fields of literature.

Horse -Racing.
This cruel and dangerous amusement
has become all the rago in this quartpr
lately. We understand there were five
rac'es last week, all within the limits of
the borough, and from the good start that
has been made .there will probably be an
equal if riot greater number this week.
The same passion for horse•racing we are
told was prevalent some years ago, and
was only checked by a sudden and awful
casualty. Whether it is' to be pursued to
a like result now, or not, remains to be

DIED.
/Died March 9th, 1650, at the residence of his mo
ther, in Carlisle, Dr. GEORGE WILLIS FOULK, In the
27th year of his age.
However eminent a man may be In science or lit
craters, his death occasions no lasting vacuity in so
ciety. His place may soon be filled by another: It
Is nevertheless painful to record the death of hint
who is the subject of this mace. A young nine,
who by his assiduity it the study bf his profession,
has become tile victim of his own erigernese . to reach
the eminency which Ito was well qualified to attain.
Ile forfeited his life by too constant nn application to
his studies.
Dr. rotilk graduated at Dickinson College In Car
lisle, in 1814. Ile then commenced.the study of mete
icine with his father, Dr. G. D. Foulk, now deceased
but then a physician of high character and standing
which he bore with him to the grave.
The subject of this notice became, In 1840, a grad
uate of the Jefferson Medical College of Philadel
phia. He returned to Carlisle and commenced the
practice of Aledichie and Surgery. The . tatter branch
of his profession,he was particularly attached to, and
performed some surgical operations, which would
have done honor to older practitioners. His . health
full he went to the South in November, 1840, in
the le of having, by change oh climate, his health
restored. Ile returned to Carlisle in February, 1850,
then tottering to the grave, and on the 4th day df
March, surrendered hie soul to the God who gave It.
This world may not miss him, but friends have
lost a friend, and science an adorer.
