Fire and Incendiariem.
A fire broke out last night about 11
o'clock, in Church Alley, corner of Har.
per's Row, which for a time threatened a
very serious destruction of propejy in
the very centre of our boreugh; The
fire commenced in a stable belonging, to
the property occupied by Mr. Arnold,
Merchant, and speedily communicated to
other stables and out—houses in the im—
mediate vicinity. The stable of Mr. Ar—
nold, a stone building, was burned to the
walls, with all its contents, including a
valuable cow, and a small frame ware—
house belonging to Mr. Henry Saxton,
VMS disci entirely consumed. Several
smaller buildings, of less value, wero
'burned or greatly damaged. Our sever—
al Fire Companies deserve great praise
for their prompt and unwearied exertions
,Ottirresting the fire, before it had ex—
tended to buildings of greater value. We
never saw them work with better effect,
embarrassed-as they were by the want
of anufficient supply of water. The ac—
knowledkements of our citizens are also
due to Col. Cook, for his prompt des—
patch of a detachment of men from the
garrison, who arrived at the scene in suf.
ficient time ta render efficient assistance
to the firemen.
The origin of the fire being entdely
unknown by the owner of the stable, it
is strongly suspected that it was. fired 'by
an incendiary, although no suspicion rests
on any particular individual. ii so we
trust the miscreant may be detected and
receivelthe,deserts of his villainy,
64 The Twenty Second."
The late anniversary of the birth"
Washington, was celebrated_in our
borough with becoming demonstrations of
regard. Our Military 'companies were
out on parade. In the evening a supper
was served to them and guests,
at the public house of Mri - . 4 Withderlich.
Our thanks are due for an invitation, but
"circumstances" prevented• us from be,
ing preaent.
In the evening the annual Oratorical
display of the Belles Lettres Society took.
Place, which was attended as usual by a
brilliant throng of youth and beauty.
A military parade took ,place in Me
chanicsburg, on the;224 by several com
panies ofthat place and vicinity._
We have received the proceedings of a
social celebration of the day by the citi
zens of Hoguestown, but which we are
compelled to lay over to our next num
ber.
In Philadelphia we notice the day was
distinguished by unusual festivity. A
grand Ball was given by the YOung
Whigs, WhiCh was attefidid by Henry
Clay, and of course the enthusiasm run
presideht • Taylor visited Rich
mond., Va, on the great day, and partici
pated in laying the corner stone of a
Washington Monument, He was re
ceived with distinguished honor by the
military and thousands of citizen's. Long
may the name of WASHINGTON be rever
ed, and the, plion forever preserved !
ACCIDENT.—We learn from the Vol
‘unteer, that a young girl named ELIZI,
BETH °yrs, of this place. met with a sad
accident on Saturday evening week, as
she was returning from church. She
was walking at a smart pace down Porn.
(fret street, when she stumbled • and fell,
;breaking her leg in a most shocking
manner. The cap of the knee i mps split
and the limb much splintered. The
lirrrtiiva r set by Drs. Baughman and
Dale, a the patient is doing as we,ll as
could be expected.
ItiOu'We join with our conlemporariea
in the hope that the recent accident will
direct the serious attention of the• corn,
nay to the injury we are all subject to
ifroin the rough stone pavements which
!still existin a number of our streets. It
lis high jima. they were all removed.
1 1 69tING.—The Washing• Recipe,
ttdvertised, by Dr. G. L. Shearer, is said
,to be an excellent affair, by many who
'have tried it. It is worthy the attention
of housekeepers.

Wo noticed sign some slight defects in
the composition, superfluity of words; inaptnoisL,
of metaphor, &o. The gentleman's Chemical
allusions strongly impressed us that he had
greatly triumphed over learning.
True Merit.,—We were highly gratified with
this speech. The gentleman reflected credit
on himself and his society. We found no fault
worth naming.
Le Probleme S6ciat.—This was splendidly
written, but the gentleman's delivery was
somewhat defective. He showed himself mas
ter of his subject. The piece would have done
credit to a mom experienced pen. When ha
commenced we thought him an ultra socialist,
but webs agreeably disappointed in finding that
he took the only true view of this subject.
The Fail of Babel.—When we first noticed
thia.subject, we were at a loss to know in what
manner the gentleman would treat it, but he
had not spoken long before it was evident.—
He handled it with ability, and we were pleas
ed with hie moral. We will only add that his
delivery was scmewhat too rapid.
Philosophy of Opinion.—This Was a gold
speech. The speaker seemed determined to
impress the audience with. the well known fact
that consistency is a jewel. lie is evidently
Hot deficient in self confidence. A little prac
tice in bowing would not hurt WM.
Promftheus Bound.—This, though last, was
not least. Judging from the gentleman's speech.
i f
wo might call him a Pr metheus, but from his
!Closeness on the stage rtainly not Bound.—
He exhibited great orig ality. Hie principal
defect was in his voice ,
Among all the rest i e must not fail to pay a
passing tribute to tl.e minittee and bind, both
of which acquitted themselves with honor.
Notwithstanding our slight objections, we
think the exhibition on the whole was highly
creditable to the speakers. R.
