It rarely happens that the death of nn individual
makes a void in society which cannot be speedily
filled. Great tees die and great teen succeed them,
and all the show of public'lamentation is . but mock
ery. When the pageant is ended, the Inetnory of
him whose sword waved terror, or whose eloquence
startled nations, pusses away. Ilidtory alone will
tell his name, for when his immediate friends and
relapses have departed, no one.is Jell to tenors over
his grave. But different is it when a small commu
nity is deprived of a good citizen and a usefu l man,
whose place is not likely. mOl3ll to he supplied ;then,
the tears of the family are.not the only tribute to his
memory; all who knew him sorrow. Such was the
