• Now.al the onset of the Whig administm•
tion, the design of the Democratic managers
being to effect its overthrow, they have pit
thills favorite tactics in requisition, and thus
.we see all the destructive energies' of their
press beginning, to bear on particular individ
uals in office. The President unhappily for
thempis too strong trenched in the con
fidence of the people to he assailed at pres
ent. The members of. the ,Cabinet, toe, are
bite so many formicianle bastions shooting
out from the main -works, and affordingibtle
hope orsuccesslul assault .
The chosen point of allack,Therefore, is
the Second Assistant Postmaster. General Mr,.
Fitz Henry' Warten. The battery is.,played
off upop Mr. Warren in the old-way... it is
said he was once unfortunate in business. This
alone-ivouid-got-answer-lhe-purposooLhi
maligners; they therefore connect With it a
charge of fraud. Here is a pretty specimen
of party tactics. 'the first half of the story
is true; the other half is•false. The calcula
tion is, that the truth will carry the lie on its
back, and give it-currency with the world.
They adopt the trick -of the counterfeiter,
who put in a good note to - make. the false
one pass. Let the story alone in their hands,
and in the course of a few months the whole
would be stereotyped and sworn to by the
entire Democratic press, from Dan to Beer'-
sheba. Unfortunately for the success of the
trick, it has been prcmptly exposed, and the
proper rebuke has been hurled back upon
the authors of the fraud. We 'tripe this
prompt refutation, of the, slanders of the
Democratic press, may serve as an example
and ri - rule for the future. Let falsehood.be
met at once, and not have time to be trans
muted into seeming truth, by - the liocriercus
of daily repetition. .
There is h feature in this attack upon the .
Second Assistant Postmaster General, which
deserves special notice. Knowing full well
the itnportance of keeping the Democratic
army of postmasters in place, so as to 'have
{hair services in the election - , the.. leaders
hope by a fierce assault upon - Mr. Warren,
to frighten this officerMil-paralize lila - i3f
forts in the work of reform ;tibia lies hefore
him, and at the same time, incidentally, to
daunt the administration Heel!, In respect
to Mr. Warren, this calculation evinces little
knowledge'of the man. He has a quick in:
taitive perception-of right and wrong,. and .a
declaim' pail promptness in action, winch
never take counsel of fear. He is not the
man loquail at any threat which stands he
tween.him-and his duty At the aide, of the'
postmaster General, hoie indeed amoaeable
and iafhable public officer. ~
rho hope of striking an alarm into the
Whig administration, which seems, to be
entertained by- these assailants of. personal
character, is most preposterous and absurd.-
They have utterly mistaken their, man at
every blow they have aimed. The admin
ieti-ation will de ` nothingrashly, nor Will they
be guided by a narrow and inulgar partizan
Spitit. But let these darir plotter, of faction ,
and'subterranean mischief nardernber Zach
ary Taylor's reply to Santa Anna's demand,
of it surrender on the field •,of Buena Vista,
and then consider whether their open blue.
ter or their underground tricks will be likely
to dismay. an Administration. of, which that
same Zachary Taylor is the head. - -
