Longing foe the; May"— , „ , Not the-May of the nalendor,—for that has cape, heralded by whistling Nor'.west'eq, and which we enjoy in our overcoats on the streets 'or by our winte• firesides at hoind=bit " the May" of the poet, the May. of the flowers and fragrance, the May for plestant rambles Where the pleasant hawthorn brambles With. the avapdhine alternating, Scent the dewy woe.— When will that come? Truly our heart is "sick with longing, longing for the gentle May." We have waited for it patiently, but up to this present sixteenth day the season has really more of the elements of Creaember.than the May of the olden time. We trnet it will soon come, for yoiiiliful aertlimentalista and economical housekeepers are alike "Watt ing,, sad, dejected, weary. Waiting for the Mai." NINEVEH !—Our first page this week contains a notice of a new work by an English Antiquarian:, Mr. LAYARD, accompanied with extracts from it, which our readers will find, deeply interesting. The discoveries made by Mr. Layard are indeed wonderful. in a period -br eighteen months beginotng with November, 1846, and ending with April, 1847, Mr. Lay ard disentombed various palaces and other edi fices of the Assyrians, and proved beyond cavil from paintings found on the walls, that not only wee that people highly' civilized. but that the arch, believed to be a comparatively modern discovery, was in tura among them. Beautiful glass was aleci•discomed. He traced out the site, W.-means of its ruins of the famous city of Nineieli. When we remember that the capital 'of thu Aesyrlens ,iivas destroyed six .hundyekyfers before the j Cliiistien era, end only one hundred_ and, fifty after Rome is sup. posed to have beem.founded, we begin to form some conceptions of the antiquities of these ruins—fof the latest of them aro at least twen -VlONMlThltred years old. Even when.Z.ino. plion marched over this plain, during his cede. butted retreat of' the ten thousand Greeks, in the year B. C. 400, every trace of Nineveh I ad disappeared, its name had been forgone rt very-neighborhood-Whore-it-had. once-flour ish. ed. Tha.great capital of .. three days' jour ney" had became a ruin, as the prriphet fore. . told, she was laid waste, and there was none tohemoati her. , CHECKED IN HIS CAREER.—Ohe day last week a young' man who had been sporting about town fur some time previous, hired pair of horses and light wagon at HiltnnlL.v- , cry Stable, to take as he said a short drive.— But as he did not return that day nor the next, Mr. Hilton concluded that his property was gnne._ Ina dsy.or two tiler he received a tel egraphic despatch.from Baltimore, stating that the young man had been ar,...t e d and he could rocover his property. It appears that two weeks since this young •man robbed ❑re Telxgraph office at Baltimore of about 1!.50 in money. Being suspected he'lefl the City dud came to Carlisle, where he lived well and loom ed large until his funds got law, Ile thou , hired the horses of Mr. Hilton and made his way hack to 11sdimore. The p..lice officers, who were on the look-out for him, arrested him soon after his return. When, as the Balti more 'Sun' says, he made confession of the foregoing facts. The young rogue's name ie , George G. Green, and he ie about 21 years of age.- He Wall committed to prison for trial. P/DLADELPIIIA ART UNION.—The Annual Distribution of the Philadelphia Art Union took play:sleet Monday evening a week. From the annual report it appeared that the number of subscribers was• 1,206, and the aggregate receipts s6,o3s—deducting from this commissions, the cost of the elegant en• graving of Ruth end Boaz, and other expenses, the sum of $1,417 33 was left to be distributed.
