Extrscis fr9,o Cu address delivered be

Society by Hon. J. G. dHAPAIAN.
«I have said that the market for the
products of the farm, is the honie of the
consumer; and• the comnion sense of
every man will tell him that the expen
ses of transporting those products to that
market is deducted from its sale and
paid by the producer. We ship our
products to the most convenient ports,—
they are sold by our factors to the specu
lators, br factor of an Eastern manufac•
turer, or European capitalist: ft is in
transit until it reaches the place where
it is bought for consumption. and the
price which we receive is just so much
as the article will sell for, clear of all
exactions to Ivliich it is subjected. The
factor who sells for us is paid a commis-
Sion. The speculator wha puschases of
him must have a conituis.sion or advance
for his :rouble and risk. The New
York purchrthr or agent, ndds on his
commission, and the consumer buyi the
art;cle in competition with similar arti•
cies articles that are grown nearer to
him—and all these charges and expen
ses of factotarre, commissions, freights,
insurances and exchanges, are deducted
from the price paid by the cu
and the balance minus the . pry
speculation, is th 3 price paid to the far
-•mer for his -produots;Alie—nearer -then

to the producer; the batter. the icrice he
will get for his produce. This 'is the.

England. All of her agricultural pro
. • ducts are consumed at rioml.;:lind she
exports the fabric and corrimodity..which.
is manufactured upon the farmer's pro
ducts to every part - of the -world—thus
keeping the consumers of her pro - ducts
in the condition of colonists to - her.—
She ‘:s. emphatically the workshop of

Portugal with that of England. The
sun never shone upon a fairer region
'' than Portugal, and. there is no country
snore inviting, and affording greater in
ducements by nature to the agricUltura
list, yet she is in Tt state of worse than
vassalage to England, because she has
by treaty stipulations bartered her man
ufactures for a market for her -vines, and
removed the customer so far from the
prOdUcer, that the costs of transportation
alone exceed the value of the article, and
her name it now .i , synonsmous with po
verty and wretchedness,'
"It population which - produces
weiiith,_and population which improves
agriculture, We want more consumers
for our 'products. The products will
increase if the consumption would • in

.Your land will become. rich, if
your population will fill up-and consume
what is made. The more that is requir

will the capacity of the production be
increased. Your lands will, grow rich
as your .popnlation demands from them
the ratio of the demand upon the.eapac
ity of the land for supplies for •clainestic
consumption. You want. population.—
You want consumers. You want the
artizans, and mcchanics r and machinists;
' and manufacturers as consumers of your
products: For your corn—your w heat—
oats—hay—potatoes—turnips--=canbage,
and eery other article which the teem
ing earth will yield to the labor of man.
I may be told that many of those articles
are not raised in greater amount than
necessary p for our own consumption,—
Be it so—and why not ? Because we
have no market for them I There is no
demand- for them. There are no consu
mers for them. • Let there be consumers
and we shall raise them. We shall find
our capacity to increase, in proportion to
the demand for consunition, and as the
, population increases, so will our produc
tions. Every means should be adopted
to create a larg.sr 'demand for our pro
ducts and to lessen. the expenses of send %

tural products—our beef, veal, mutton,
turnips, potatoes and cabbages. These
must be exchanged for the implements
which the farmer requires in the pursuit

and ploughs, and carts,, and barroiYs
should be got in exchange for t your : - pro
ductions, which now rot on y.our4iiinds;
or for such commodities 'as may - readily
be if there was a demand for
them: Your wool must be exchanged'

MeSSIN. SANDS : Gentlemen—Sympathy for
the afflicted induces me to inform you of the
remarkable cure effected by your Sarsaparilla
in the case of my wife. She was severely

enlarged emitter limbs much swollen. After
suffering ova a year and finding no relief from
the remedies used, the disease attacked, and

her friends, she found her health quite rebtnr

Bronchitis; the healing properties of your
Sarsaparilla.' My wile suffered for twenty,
months in such a manner as is not easily de

above :a whisper, and when exposed to the cold
air, it occasioned something like spasms in
the throat, the effect of which was felt in the

complaint was aitended with a dry cough,
produced by the *stunt irritation and in
domination of the throat. By the use of your

• The prin..apal advantage this thorn has over
all others that it is so constructed that the top
cati be taken off Rt as to give free neeess to the
inside of the churn, which makes it convenient
to putlin the cream and get out the butter. A
Thermometer is attached to the end of the
Churn so as to show Ole 'exact temperature of
the cream, which experience -shows should be
60 degrees to make good Butter. A chamber or
space is arranged around the bottom of the
churn, for the purpose of admitting cold or warm
warier, so as to bring the cream to the desired
temperature without mixing the water With the
cream. The secret in churning . butter is, to
have your cream at the proper temperature ; it
- Will produce more and. better Muter, and take
less time in churning; it churns equally welkin
cold or' warm weather—no such thing as having
scalded butter. All that is necessary to make
goad bUtter all seasons of the year, is to get one
of 'Crowell's Patent Thermometer Churns.—
We would-most respectfully invite the public to
call and examine for themselves.
Mr. Geo. Siingler—Sir; We have been using
the Thertuometer Churn I got of you fur some
time, and find it far superior to the old barrel
chttrn lor several reasons; first, great saVing of
time in getting butter. the average time of churn
ing fifieen Minutes, (all weathers); sec
ondly, the hinter when obtained is much firmer
than when .using an) other churn ; finally - , my
folks say they would not exchange it for any
other churn and twice the original cost of the
Thermometer Churn.
.. Sep. '2B, ISM] G. W. SIIFIAFFER.
Mr. Geo. Spanglex—l have had the Crowell
Thermometer Churn you made for Inc in use
at my place, and I do not hesitate to say dint no
Farmer should 'be without it. Fifteen minutes

value of this saving of time and labor consists in
this, that it requires no more time at any one
