for Mr. Polk to devolve - the . command

he succeeded the- Whig party , might
nominate him for President and -'elect
him: :lint Taylor was modest, and corn
paratiyely obscure, and although a Whig
might achieve victories without standing
-in Mi:Polk's way. The people would
likely enough honor Mr. -Polk the mote
for appointing to the command of the
army adyenning upon Mexico, an 9fAcer
who would be sure to win victories
wherever and whenever he met the ene

Thus the matter commenced. Gen.

At .this, stage. the Administration,
perceitiing that the mighty hero .and

under an overruling Providence, and in

• On the sth of March next. a new era
in the management of this Government
commences. General Taylor was not so
' selfish as his immediate predecessor, in
his acceptance of his nomination to the
Presidency. He did not say as a means
of satisfying or disarmjng rivals, that he

snake none in his Inaugural Address.—
it was not wise for hint to do so in his
letter of acceptance. It will be the same
in regard to his'• Inaugural.. It requires
-no Solomon to arrive at this conclusion,
'when the •fitct of Generid Taylor's ac
knewlcdged wisdom is taken into view.
100 man knows who Gen. Taylor will
call into his Cabinet. Good sense lends
everybody to believe that 'he will call
. about him some of the ablest and best
inen in the nation, among the_mauy-who
haie been most influential in defeating
and putting down the Nlk. administta
