Frauds on' the Public
A communication in the Harrisburg Tele
graph discloses some important facts for the
tax-payers of the Commonwealth, shirring
that for years past enormous frauds have
been' permitted in be carried en alot:g the
public worts threaghthe neglect or incom
petency of the public agents. The Tele
-graplrsaysi-"Fhere-is-no-douhrt in Ale-Timis
ot those acquainted with 'the conduct of
these State ngetifs last year, that the. State.
was defrauded out of 5300,000 tincrugh the
idleness or' dishonetty of its agents. The
election of JAMES M. POWER. has, to a
considerable extent, arrested this system of
plunder, and will save to the state the' pre
sent year not less than one*hundeed and filly
thousand dollars! And the election, of ano
ther Reform candidate, JOSEPH W. PAT
TON, will increase the saving ; we have no
doubt, to the enormous sum of 300,000 an-:
nually. A matter so important to the inte
rests of tax payers we hope will not be for
gotten. A reform that already saves 1.56,-
.000 a year to them, and . promises tct save
$300,0013, if they do their `duty, is wet* of
their attention and their votes."
