We are glad to see that the Course of Lectures

a source gratification and instruction to our
Citizens for several winters past,-stems to have
lost nothing dt its, hold upon public favor. The
course has opened this winter under • the
most favorable auspices, and we doubt not the
,Succceding lectures will present attractions that
will fully sustain the warm interest that the pub

The first lecture,,by Rev. Mr. THORNE, on the
"System of Popery," etc., was a temperate

Thesecondlecture w as delivered on Tuesday eves.

The subject was "Electricity;' with various il.

formed with the 'splendid apparatus beloiming to
the College. The portion of the Iceture which
was devoted to showing the uses and proper con

practical value, and gavel especial satisfaction to

Advice from Mr. Adams
, In Mr. Adams' lute visit to Washington, Pa.'
ho visited the Female Seminary °Ube place, and
was addressed by the principal, Miss Foster;lica
short and very neat speech. The Washington
Reporter says that Mr. Adams was very much
affected, by,the address, and said that it was the
first instance in which a lady had ever thus ad
dressed him personally. After referring briefly
to his mother; stating that iroin her lie derived
whatever instruction, especially religious .and
moral, which had pervaded .a lung lite, he address
ed the young ladies and said—
_ .
"1 have been tsught through the course of my
life to love•und revere the linuale sea; but I have
been taught, also—amt that lesson has perhaps
impressed itself even more - . strongly, rt may be,
than the other—,- I have been taught nut to flutter
them. It is nut unusual in the •intercourse of
men with the other sex —and especially for young
men-- • to thins, that the way to win the hearts of
ladies is by fluttery.. To love and revere the sex,
is what I think the duty ()linen; bUt not to flat
ter them; and this I wouhl say to•the young ti
dies here, and if they, and others present, will al
low use, with all, the authority which nearly four
score years nosy have with those who have not
yet attained one score--I would say to them,
what 1 have nu doubt they say to themselves, and
are taught here, nut 'to take the fluttery of WWI
as a prOld of perk!ction."
