The Dragoon 'Temperance Society was often visited by deputations 'from ours, till its rout - oval with the troops of which it was composed. ' We' were at some pains to ascertain the nom . ber of taverns and distilleries 'in the county dor— log 1841. The, tavern licenses taken out Were 64, and the number of distilleries in operation 28. Of the taverns, 9 belonged to our borough, and aro still in uperation—all trafficking in intoxicat; ing drinks; and it is believed that there jail's° much drinking at several of the groceries in town, which retail liquor without a license. . The num.: _bar of taverns in the county is less by only MM . this seer thari.lait. We make this record of the' - Amine of our county and borough, confidently be. 'fieving that the time will soon come when the• voice of the friends of good Order. and of suffer. ing humanity shall be heard; though. with sad. flees of heart we still•see• the' professed friends of temperance, petitioning . for tavern licenses, and ' sharing the, profits of the traffic. • In behalf of the families among -us alreadi, broken With grief, in behalf of . the deluded sufferers from this traffic, as well as of these whose habits are now but, just forming for future ruin, we, Would entreat all Such to pause before- they give their countenance to 'business so full of mischief to all the best inter. eats of muciety; • • Qnthe l2th-ofApril, by resolution of your, com. mittee, Mr. Krause and 'Other gentlemen from Harrisburg, ,viere invited to Carlisle forthe Par : pose, of forming a Washington Society. This enterprise was encouraged by your committee in every way in their power - ; and the results you are all familiar with. In regard to public meetings in the borough of Carlisle, we hive been deterred from holding any, for the same reasons which had existed fora year and a -half before. We find, hoWeVer, lit *the pr'e'sent time, though temperance me:tinge are frequent among us, that there is a large portion of the oinimunity who never attend them,'and who consequently derive no - direct benefits from them. We suggest, a's o Partiul_reniedy fur this evil, the opening of a Monthly Temperance Meet. • ing,to be held successively in the varioui churches . of tlic; borough, stanch times a7l not to interere with - the regular Meetings of the other societies. This ircield at least. have the advantage of invit ing the attendance of the ladies, on whose influ , enco we so essentially depend for the triumph of our cause, but which we have never-yet been able • .• very fully to command. This measure we ear nestly rccominend.to those who may - succeed us • in our office. We Om recommend an early circulation of the pledge trough the borough,- which has been done the last two years with such signal benefit. Many of the children who joined in the temperance procession of the 4th or July, were recognized as the membera of our society, whose names often stand recorded on the Fame pledge with those of their parents. To such we must look-to sustain . the temperance cause when we shall tie down in our graves. Nor shall we look in vain, if those whom God has madd their natural gnardians and others do their duty. They may never know the 'temptation's which others feel to Violate the pledge they have so early given. This . presenta to us a thira suggestion to our anceeiliors; which is, that. they would consider the propriety of orginizing Juvenile Temperance Societies both in the borough and in other part, of the county. The saving of a boy front hccom. ing a drunkard shall be an infinitely greater Wes. sing to the world, than the reflirmatiodeta-maii- who hai alroadY wasted• his moral powers, and done perhaps more Injury by his %ply oxamale, than he can ey9 countera ct . by the host use of his remaining influence. . And matter of fact proves, that too often those who are thud rescued, aro 'eyed but to make their subsequent ruin the more perspicuOus. • There is a small debt due for printing, which our succe sssss will, we think, be able fully to meet by the aid of a list of annual subscribers to the funds of the society, which we transmit to them. We 'close with the expression of a belief, that the cause of temperance has, on the whole, made great advances in our town 'and county, during the past year. A greater number of new code. ties" have been organized during the last year than ever before; and of the dkstillerles it is be. Hewed scare - Sly one is now in eucceasful opera. lion. . These have been closed, however, we fear, oftener from pecuniary than from moral consid. erations. But we cannot tiring ourselves to be lieve, in view of the moral change which every. where accompanies the suppression of these des. tructive 'fires, that they will ever again be re. kindled. And yet we are admonished by the experience of the past, thatoura is a cause which needs c ‘ oiistant cafe to secure it, onward march, inasmuch as its enemies are everywhere and at all timer. on the alert. to take advantage of the remissness or negligence of , its friends. -.—The-society in whose mime we now speak has, we believe, always/ gone for the cause of temper. puce, ta(hes than for the interests of our caddy. So may always continue to be. Nothing could More dernutly wished, than that the ,fime.shoUld comb when our labors in the tem ',mos Cause can;ba dispensed with.
