THE ROAD DRAG.
A I.ively Interest In It—The Kin«l of
Ilonil It Make*.
The road drag lias lisul a veritable
boom this spring, and this Is likely to
continue, for it seems to be demon
strated tliat good roads can be made
by proper and persevering application
of the drag. If one lias not already
dragged the road now is the time to be
gin—in fact, any time is a good time
to begin. The method of making and
using the drag and the principle 0:1
which It operates may be very well
understood through the following state
ments from National Stockman:
To maintain hard, smooth, oval earth
roads practically throughout the year
all that is necessary is to go over them
•with a drag after every heavy rain in
the spring, summer and fall. Use the
drag while the dirt is in a puddled
condition, so that the device will sme?r
it down In a sort of layer. When the
liOAD DRAG IN ACTION.
[This drag is miide of plank. The split IOR
is Kenerally considered preferable.]
gun and wind act on this moist coat
ing ic hardens. Then the constant
tamping by horses and the wheels of
vehicles beats it down as compactly
a» the dry mud balls which the boys
piakp of clay and use in their slung
shots. The next dragging places an
other layer of mud over the surface of
the road to be firmed In the same man
ner. This is repeated so often that
the road finally acquires a hide or
shield which is almost Impervious to
rain, shedding water like a metal roof.
After two or three years it will re
main hard and smooth throughout the
year, and drivers can go at a rapid
clip over it any time except when cov
ered with Ice. The bottom never falls
out of It. Vehicles and wagons t an
not cut grooves Into It. Being smooth
all over, traveling is distributed over
the entire surface. Two or three bug
gies, for example, can travel it side by
side. The road is of course higher at
the middle than at either side. At the
start It may be lower In the center
than at the sides, though uiost roads
on which the common four horse grad
ers have liccti used are slightly elevat
ed in the middle. The drag Is made
po that it will work up an elevation in
the center. Four or five dragginga
jvill establish the oval characteristic in
i>lmost any road.

My experience the past season con
firms the belief that the way to make
money out of melon growing is to
build up a reputation for shipping good
goods and have your own brand or
trademark. We made eighteen ship
ments to our commission man and had
goods In every shipment that sold at
the highest prices. This result was se
cured l>y holding up the quality. As
the season -u. culled t-ludux
and closer. This naturally gave us a
smaller proportion of fancy and No. 1
melons, but we had (lie satisfaction of
getting the top price from llrst to last
for our best goods that bore our trade
park. -V month after the melon season
H'as pver the salesman who had charge
of selling our fruit said It was a pleas
pro to handle sut-li goods. It hurt the
customers first to pay more than
they could got other melons for, but
after they onco uoi started they almost
fought to get our fruit before It was
gone.—W. It. I.oyd, Illinois.

A Woman's Health
Is a heritage t<*> sacred to tie expert- j
meuted with. For her peculiar and deli
cate ailments only medicines of known
composition and which contain no alco
hol. narcotics, or other harmful or habit
fiirminß drugs should be employed. Such
a medicine is I)r. Pierce's Favorite Pre
scription—a remedy with a record of over
forty years of cures to recommend it; a
remedy, the makers of which print ita
formula on every bottle-wrapper and at
test Its completeness and correctness
under oath; a remedy devised and adapted
to woman's delicate constitution by an
educated physician—an experienced spe
cialist in woman's diseases; a remedy,
every ingredient of which has received
the written endorsement of the most cmi
nent medical writers of all the several
schools of practice for the cure of woman's
peculiar diseases; a remedy which has
more butut-jUU cures to its' credit than
any ..ther sold l.v druggists for woman's
special requirements. It is not given
away in the form of "trial bottles" to bo
experimented with, but is sold at a fair
price by all dealers in medicines.
If a woman has l>cariiig down, or drag
ging pains, low down in the abdomen, or
pelvis, backache, frequent headaches,
dizzy or fainting spells, is nervous and
easily startled, has gnawing feeling In
stomach, sees imaginary floating specks,
or spots la-fore her eyes, has melancholia,
or " blues," or a weakening disagreeable
drain from pelvic organs, she can mako
no mistake by resorting to the use of Dr.
Pierce's Favorite Prescription. It will
invigorate and tone up the whole system
and especially the pelvic organs.
No woman suffering from any of the
above symptoms can afford to accept any
secret nostrum or medicine of unknown
composition, as a substitute for a medi
cine like Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescrip
tion, which is OF KNOWN COMPOSITION and
has a record of over forty years and sells
more largely to-day than ever before. Its
makers withhold no secrets fruin their
j |Kitients. believing open publicity to bo

Dr. Pierce invites all suffering women
