NESTS FOR HENS.
Tl»l» Hodcl Severn* "to Take'*—lias a
*!i.!in*£ Bottom.
Tlu- accompanying drawing is made
fro::: a model of my liens' nests that I
used as an illustration in a poultry
talk at <.iir local institute. It seemed
-to take," so I thought that a descrip
tion of it would Is? of some interest,
writes a correspondent to Ohio Farm
er. The plan of the uest is original
with mo, and the idea is that it can
be easily and thoroughly cleaned and
also that it «10. s not serve as a roost
ing place at night for the liens, as
j many nests frequently do.
i Tlu* nests are made somewhat as fol
lows: Tli-' bottom of one set of nests
consists of a single board that rests on
cleats or strips nailed on the upright
I end boards. The bottom can be re
moved »t pIeUSK, drawer flllMon,
leaving tl* ' nests 1 bottomless, so that

the old nc-st material, dust and louse
harboring tilth all drop out. There
need be no l»oards nailed on back of
nests, as the wall of the building wbere
the nests ara placed serves as a back.
I place my nests so that the bottom
of the nest Is two or two and a half
feet from the lioor, thus savins floor
space. A 1 by 2 inch strip, fastened
perch-like, about six inches In front of
nests, is very convenient for a hen that
wants to lay, as she can pass ulong on
It until she comes to a vacant nest. A
board of nearly the width and of the
same length as the top and hinged to
the lower edge of the top (this is not
given in the drawing) can !>e laid back
during the day, leaving the nests open,
and let down at evening, closing the
nests, and then tlie hens have just one
place to roost, and that where they be
long-on their perches.
FINE FORAGE.
The linpc Crop One of the (IntrUeit
OroYYii Green Feed*.
Perhaps no crop can be raised on the
farm giving a larger quantity of feed
in the shape of green forage tliau rape.
Easy of cultivation* not only can sev
eral sowings be made In one season,
but the same growth may be cut or
fed off on tlie ground more than once.
It Is Invaluable to the stock ralsnr. All
kinds of live stock from poultry to cat
tle eat it eagerly and thrive on It.
Itape may be either cut and carried to
live stock on pastures and In yards or
fed off on Ihe ground wbese grown by
folding live stock on the land.
The greatest value of the rape crop is
the fact that it supplies a full feed of
succulent food In a short time from
sowing. I'r >in six to eight weeks are
usually sufficient to make the crop
ready for feeding. It may lie sown
broadcast, but gives best results if
planted in row or ridges and cultivat
ed. The l.uid should be well manured
and a thoroughly prepared seed bed
m: de r>—.dv before sowing Rape will
tin .1 ;rro\v i l:! 11 along, even during dry
v,-father. In my experience I have got
the best re uilts by sowing in rhlges
under which a ;.ooil supply of barnyard
manure has been put.
In feeding rape care should bo tak
en not to let the animals remain too
long at first, and never let tliem have
aecess to it when very hungry or If the
nine Is wet from ruin or frost. Where
sheep are being fattened on rape they
should be looked to several times a
day, as when they get heavy and get
on their backs In low places they ore
unable to rise unassisted, and in such
case* some perish, writes a New
Hampshire correspondent to Country
