LATE SUMMER SPRAYING.
*n I p to Ualr llMln* of K«perlrnee
With San Jaid »r«lf-
By Dr JOHN B SMITH. New Jersey.
*■ before State Horticultural society.
During last summer a series of ex
periments were mad-? with comblna
tlons of lime and sulphur to note the
effect ppou Insects and upon foliage.
The Sail Jose scales sometimes be
come so abundant In the latter part of
th« summer that It 6eem« desirable to
check them so that tho trees shall not
be too badly Infected when they go
Into winter. I did not myself use the
boiled mixture of lime nud sulphur,
but I have been Informed by several
who have used It that It was very
satisfactory. They used it at winter
strength, omitting the salt, and seemed
to find that the lime and sulphur alone
may l>e used at nearly winter strength
without especial damage, except on
the more tender kinds of leaves. As
the result of all the work done I do
not feel that it Is possible to recom
mend either of the lime and sulphur
combinations for summer use against
the developing scales.
CM of Soaps.
The practical result of all the experi
ments in which various kinds of soaps
were tested during the summer is that,
except for the straight whale oil soap,
with or without tobacco, nothing pro
duced any satisfactory result at a rea
sonable cost.
Crude OH.
Kerosene and crude oil have l>otb
received rather a black eye in public
estimation. There were too many peo
ple who had undoubtedly injured trees
by using them. The successes that
were scored failed to count. And yet
about the only really satisfactory re
sults that were obtained against the
Han Jose or pernicious scale on other
than peach or plum trees were ob
tained by the use of crude oil of the
proper specific gravity—that Is, 43 de
grees Beaume. It was emphasized
again that on the pear especially the
oil produced a beneficial effect that
seems to be eyual to the beneficial ef
fect produced by the lime and sulphur
mixtures on the peach, and that there
Is practically no danger where any
thing like reasonable care is used la
making the application. For best re
sults the oil should be Just a little
warm. It then sprays much more
readily, the same amount will cover a
larger area, and the effect upon the
Insects seems to be greater. On pear
trees, where the Californian washes
seem to fall most completely, the crude
petroleum seems to bo most effective.
Kerosene and Llmold Mixtures.
Kerosene has not been much used
during the past few years. It seems
to be coming Into favor again, how
ever, since it has been found that it
might be combined with water me
chanically, without the necessity of
having a special pump, and without
the work of making a chemical emul
sion. The emulsifying agent In this
case. If the mixture can be called an
emulsion. Is a preparation of magne
sium limestone called llmold. The
llmold nud kerosene mixtures are
worthy of a careful trial and offer a
fair prosr#ct of good results.
Prepared Oil to Mix With Water.
Heretofore In order to spray the oil
over a larger surface and thereby to
prevent Injury to the tree we have ei
ther put on the material combined with
water in a mechanical mixture or we
have combined the oil with soap to
form au emulsion. The combination
pumps unfortunately do not act even
ly and sometimes upset all calculations
by first spraying water, then oil. Chem
ists have been seeking for some meth
od of chemically trcatlug the crude oil
so that It will mix directly with water,
and that method has been found at the
present time. I have on the way now
two lota of oil treated by a process that
'makes It perfectly mlscible with water.
One lot Is high grade Pennsylvania oil,
the other lot is Texas heavy oil with
an asphaltum base and considerable
sulphur.
(jood Cheap Feed For Calve*.
Hoots and tubers should form a large
part of the feed for calves In the win
ter. Turnips, artichokes and beets are
all good cheap feeds for calves and
sheep in the winter season. They will
do much letter on half the grain ration
with a few roots and tubers. Calves
get tired of all dry feed In winter, and
often get so that they do not cat their
feed well. They relish some succulent
food much better—Cor. Farm Journal.
Sterilised Vegetables.
It Is reported that a discovery has
recently been made whereby vegetables
may be preserved Indefinitely by ster
ilizing them with hot air. Corn, peas,
string beans, lima beans, etc., thus
treated "take on a withered form much
like cured hay, but when put In cold
water will resume their shape and re
tain their former brlttleness and gar
den flavor."

When the head aches hard and throbs
when the neck and eyes grow stiff, the

when any excitement or over effort
brings on an attack of nervous head
ache so severe that it leaves yon weak,

yon that yon can resist and overcome
"these terrible seizures. Such a medicine
is Dr. A. W. Chase's Nerve Pills, t
medicine that does not relieve bnt goee

Mrs. John Fall of Fourth St.. Toronto

"I like Dr. A. W. Chase's Nerve Pills
because they cured my nervous sicl

me out and leave me weak and nervous
the pain being so severe. My eyes usee
to get stiff and sore during the atfact

it. The Nerve Pills, however, provec
