PITTSBUKG'B BIG SHOW TO SUR PASS ALL RECORDS THE COMING SEASON. Though tfce opening of the new ex- | poailioft at Pittsburg is several weeks ; off, there is an air of activity which pervades the buildings at the Point • which has a semblance of the days in t{ie height of the season. Scores of j b\jsy in all parts of the : bjg buildings getting everything in j readiness for the opening. \\ ednesday ! evening, Aug. 30, when Walter Dam rosch and his magnificent orchestra j will dedicate the seventeenth season. . During the summer months the in- i terior of the exposition has been re Juvenated with coats of brilliant paint, myriads of electric lights and hun dreds of yards of purple and yellow bunting. Artists are now engaged In the decorating, which must be begun weeks before the opening night, so as to have every detail in completeness for the naif million or more people who are expected to take In the musi -1 cal and other treats at the Pittsburg show this year. First in importance is the announce ment of the musical scheme for the season. Walter Damrosch. who has closed the Expo for many years, will reverse his engagement this season and open 'Music Hall. He will remain until Sept. 9. Sousa follows on Mon day. Sept. 11, and will fill a week's en gagement. On the following Monday Victor Herbert, the ever popular Pitts burg leader, will come for a week. He will close his engagement Sept. 23. On Monday. Sept. 25, Creatore will come for two weeks, remaining until Oct. 7. Sorrentino •will be at the Expo with his Italian band the follow ing week, Oct. 9 to 14, and Sousa will play his return engagement, closing with the week of Oct. 16. The engage ment of the five leading bandmasters of the world will <prove a truly rare musical treat. Aside from the engagement of the quintet of bandmasters, the Expo man agement has not overlooked the in numerable entertaining features of the main building, machinery hall and the acreage of amusement where the rol ler coaster, merry-go-round and other fun-making devices are grouped. Nota ble among the new features obtained In the way of exhibits will be the soil product display being placed In the foyer of the main building by the Canadian government. At an ouUay of nearly $26,000 Canada is erecting a series of arches, booths and decorative models composed of grain, fruits, and in fact every product imaginable raised in the Old Dominion. Another feature which has been se cured for the coming seasou and which is partially completed in machinery hall is a model of Manhattan Island, a truly small city composed of frame houses and plaster parls hills and dales. This model is being placed at the Exposition "by the Pennsylvania Railroad company and will cover 3,500 square feet of floor space. It shows the Pennsylvania railroad terminals, sections of Brooklyn, Long Island, Jer sey City, the Hudson and East rivers and the Broad street station at Phil adelphia. Among the other attractions which are already under course of comple tion In the main building Is a gallery of notables, containing 200 Sepia col orings of the leading business and professional men of Pittsburg. A number of paintings have been re ceived at the Exposition reaiiy for hanging. In the way of art ex hibits a most wonderful miracle paint ing has also been secured for the new Exposition by Manager Fitzpat rick, entitled "In the Shadow of the Cross." This painting Is a life sixed oil work of Christ. In the darkness a cross appears in the background, though it had never been placed there by the artist. Arrangements are also being made for an extensive exhibit of game and fish. An exhibit which is on view now at the Lewis and Clark exposition at Portland and which was seen by many Plttsburgers at the world's fair in St. Louis will be brought to the Exposi tion this year. It is a magnificent dis play of stuffed birds and other game, mounted as in a picture, with a hack ground of artistic arrangement. With the innumerable other attrac tive features which are being rapidly collected for the entertainment of the exposition visitors, the seventeenth season, from present indications, aug urs of nothing but success. Excursion 11 rates of one fare for the round trip " are now being arranged for with the various railroads entering Pittsburg. 1 The announcement of the dates of r these excursions to the Exposition will be made later. t The World of Trade. j .
