Ready to Make Economical Gains In
the Feed lot.
With the advent of the hand sep
arator the question Is often asked as
to the relative merits of skim uillk
from the creamery and from the hand
separator. A test comparing the two
was made at the Kansas agricultural
station with thirteen calves. At first
the calves showed a dislike to the odor
of the sterilized skim milk, but they
soon became accustomed to it and
drank it readily. There was practical
ly no difference in the gain made by
the calves between the two classes of
milk. The creamery, however, took
pains to thoroughly sterilize the milk
and was careful not to receive sour
milk that would give it u tendency
to clabber. The hand separator skim
milk was fed immediately after sep
aration. The calves receiving sk!m
milk were less subject to scours.
Results with skim milk show the pos
sibilities in raising calves 011 it and
also the variations in these results.
With young calves it requires a very
small amount of feed to produce a
pound of gain.
Three Forma of Fcedlnjt Milk.
Results of three different ways of
feeding milk, as to cost, are tabulated
as follows:

This experiment shows that the feed
cost of raising a good skim milk calf
need not exceed i? 0.'27. in contrast to
$19.13 for whole milk, and sl2 for one
raised by the dam. A skim milk calf
becomes accustomed to eating grain
and roughness early in life, becomes
gentle, and when transferred to the
feed lot is ready to make economical
gains.
In lite Feed Lot*.
At tlio close of the foregoing expori
ment the calves running with the dams
were placed in the feed lots in compar
ison with those raised 011 skim milk
and whole milk. The results in the
feed lots are shown in the following:

It will be seen that the skim milk
calves made the best gains. The feed
record shows that the skim milk calves
produced 10> pounds of gain for 439
pounds of grain, while the whole milk
calves required 170 pounds of grain
per 100 pounds of gain, and the calves
running with the dams required 475
pounds of grain per 100 pounds of
gain.
The Margin of Resistance.
A careful reading of the bulletins on
kerosene-limoid mixtures issued by the
Delaware experiment station does not
greatly encourage the idea that scale
can be destroyed by a single applica
tion even of the 20 per cent dilutiou,
but rather that repeated sprayings of
mixtures containing a lower percent
age of oil may be needed during the
summer months. Mixtures containing
not over 10 per cent of kerosene may
be Bprayed when the foliage has hard
ened in midsummer without much In
jury and is very effective in killing the
larvae and young scales, but cannot be
relied on to clear off the adults. Wheth
er trees will endure repeated applica
tions in one season of oily or caustic
insecticides Is not fully demonstrated.
The margin of resistance to Insecti
cides between the pernicious scale and
tree tissues is narrow, and the latter's
power of growth in some localities does
not seem equal to the damage caused
by frequent spraying. Rural New

Elizabeth Barrett Browning cannot be
described, if language Is to be used ac
curately, as occupying a place among
the poets justly designated great.
In no tongue hitherto has any female
writer attained to that supreme posi
tion, and were this the appropriate mo
ment, which it Is not, it would perhaps
be possible to explain why no woman
Is likely e*r to do so. Not a few fe
male writers are In effect In the front
rank of novelists. But prose-romance
is one thing and poetry quite another,
and there is a chasm between them;
nor does the circumstance of novels be
ing In this age more popular than po
etry affect In any degree the Inherent
and immutable difference. Elizabeth
Barrett Browning was, "Aurora Leigh"
notwithstanding, essentially and al
most exclusively a lyrical poet. It
would be easy to add almost indefinite
ly to illustrations of her being one of
those who "learn In suffering what
they teach In song," not ono of the
greater poets who pass through that
experience but end by getting beyond
