hundred persons were at the meeting
—A yonng business man of Dußois
was swindled ont of |250 by a pair of
card sharps last week. One of the two
men represented himself as being desir
ous of cheating bis partneT, who had
not made a fair division of money they
had won from other victims. The
scheme he proposed was that he wou'd
station himself back of bis partner's
chair and signal tbe valne of tbe bands
the partner held. The same pair swin
dled a wholesale liquor man ont of
$1 ,000 by tbe same scheme.
—Tbe Lillian Home at Valencia was
opened, last week, and it will not be
long before the management will be
giving boys from Pittsburg and Alle
gheny an outing there. The institution
was started by a Mr. Taylor, though
many others have snbscri jed to it, and
the idea is to bring the city boys out in
groups, and give them a two-weeks
outing at a time. Tbe boys are select
ed by the Management of the KiDgsley
Home in Pittsburg, and they are well
fed at the Lillian. Each boy is given a
separate and a clean bed to sleep in.and
they have a pond to bathe in and a
woods to roam in. It is a b?nefi--ence
that is a credit lo originator and sub
scribers.
—Citizens of Evans City will not soon
forget the March flood which did mach
damage <n their town. Water filled
tbe first floor in all tbe bcuses in the
central patt of the town. The water
was covered with oil from the tank de
stroyed up Mays run above the town,
and when it subsided carpets were left
covered with a scum of mud and oil
which it wail impossible to remove and
necessitated burning. Every perssa is
buying new carpets or, if cash is scarce,
doing without. In Young & Ileyl's
furniture store the water was four or
five feet deep and a piano floated about
bumping into things while several
coffins were carried out of the front
door and were borne away on the crest
of the flood.
