The isle of Athelney, or tLo "isle of nobles," as the name signifies, is one of the most famous of historic sites. A thousand years ago it was a low islet covered with willows and alders and surrounded by fens and overflowing marshes, altogether inaccessible except by boats. There King Alfred sought" refuge with a swineherd, and there be lay concealed from the invading Danes for the space of a whole year. The re sort of bis chieftains to this place caused it to be known as the "isle of nobles," which may be regarded as the cradle and stronghold of Sason liberty. After Alfred regained the possession of his throne lie erected a Benedictine abbey on this spot and "endowed it with all the lands in the isle of Athel ney.'' The monastery has entirely dis appeared. but its site is marked by a stone pillar erected in 1801 by the own er of Athelney. The pillar bears this Inscription: "Kins Alfred the Great in the year of our Lord Bi9, having been defeated by the Danes, fled for refuge to the forest of Athelney, where he lay concealed from his enemies for the spell of a whole year. lie soon after regain ed possession of his throne, and in grateful remembrance of the protection he had received under the favor of heaven he erected a monastery on this spot and endowed it with all the lands contained in the isle of Athelney. To perpetuate Hie memory of so remarka ble an incident in the life of that illus trious prince this edifice was founded by John Slade, Esq., of Maunsell, the proprietor of Athelney, A. D. 1801. London News. THE MAN WITH THE ADZ. Wonderful Accnr*«?7 of Ilia Aim »• the Bnteber'a Bloelr. Outside a butcher shop twenty or thirty persons stood watching a man at work with an adz. lie stood on a large oaken block, such as meat is chopped on, which he had taken from its legs and placed on the curb, sloping toward the street. The surface of the block had become scarred and rough ened from use. With clean, accurate strokes of the adz the man soon made it as smooth as a mahogany table. It was the wonderful accuracy of his aim that made passersby stop to look at him. He paid no attention to them. A single false blow would have ruined the block. When the Job was done, the man helped the butcher mount the block, collected $5 and went off to keep another appointment. "It has taken me twenty-three years to learn to chop like that," he said to a reporter. "My charge Is from $3 to $lO, according to the size of the block. A block requires evening off in that way every three or four years. I have customers now that I had when I first began business, twenty-five years ago. In all that time I have spoiled only two blocks, and they were during the two years of my apprenticeship. The butch ers can get their chopping blocks put in condition by sending them to the sawmill. But It is more expensive, and they can't spare then) so long from the ■hops. There is enough work ot this kind In New York to keep myself and half a dozen others busy."—New York Press. Korean Men'« Hnta. The quaintest feature of the pictur esque costumes of the Korean men is their hats. They are mousecrap-likc arrangements made from tbe hair of the wearer's ancestors. This priceless possession Is banded down from father to eldest sou, who reaches the goal of his ambition at the moment when the family hat is placed upon his head. Another grotesque form of Korean headdress is the mourning hat that Is worn in rural districts by the eldest son for three years after the death of either of his parents. This conical shaped affair of rustics or rice sLraw la as large as a bushel basket and extends to the shoulders. The Value of Exerclae. The bruin that never calls upon itself for work ciust become dull and stupid, and It is the same way with the mus cles of the body. They are filled with blood vessels that should be up and uoing. The blood has several purposes, and one Is to carry away the waste fluids of the body. The lungs are a sort of refinery, and the blood is a dis tilling ugent. If the blood becomes thick and unhealthy and sluggish the body does not keep its youthful state. Eyes grow dull, lips lose their redness, and the complexion is sallow and un lovely. It is an easy and simple mat ter to exercise a habit. Wart Cure*. Vinegar and cooking soda In solution »re said to make a capital cure for U-arts. If the wart Is kept moist with it for ten minutes several times a day it trill disappear in the course of a week or so in ordinary cases. Another cure is to touch frequently With acetic acid or nitric acid, but one must be careful not to irritate the sur rounding skin by dropping either acid. WAYS TO ADVERTISE." The Wise Hon May Kim II y See Wktefc la the lient Method. If you have goods to sell, advertise. Ilire a man with a lampblack kettlo and a brush to paint your name and number on all the railroad fences. The curs go whizzing by bo fast that no one can read them, to be sure, but perhaps the obliging conductor would stop the train to accommodate an in quisitive passenger. Have your card in the hotel register by all means. Strangers stopping nt hotels for a night generally buy a cigar or two before they leave town, and they need some inspiriting literary foot! besides. If an advertising agent wants your business advertised in a fancy frame at tho depot, pay him about 200 per cent more than it Is worth and let him put it there. When a man has three-quarters of a second in which to catch a train he invariably stops to read depot advertisements, and your card might take his eye. Of course the street thermometer dodge Is excellent When a man's fin gers and ears are freezing or he Is puff ing and "phewing" at the heat Is the time above all others when lie reads au advertisement. Have thousands of little dodgers printed and hire a few boys to dis tribute them. You've no Idea how the Junk dealer and paper and rag man will respect you. A boy with a big placard on a pole is an Interesting object on the street and lends a dignified air to your estab lishment. Hire about two. Advertise on u calendar. People never look at a calendar to see what d:iy of the month It Is. They merely glance hurriedly at it so as to be sure that your name Is spelled with or without a "p," that's all. But don't think of advertising in a well established, legitimate newspaper. Not for u moment. Your advertise ment would be nicely printed and would llnd Its way into nil the thrifty households of the region, where are the farmer, the mechanic, the tradesmen in other lines and into tho families of the wealthy and refined, all who have articles to buy and money with which to buy them, and it would be read and pondered, and people would come down to your store and patronize you and keep coming in Increasing numbers, and you might htive to hire an extra clerk or two, move into a larger block and more favorable location and do u big ger business, but of course It would be more expensive—and bring greater protlw.—Detroit Free Press. 1 The Butler County National Baiik, BUTLER, PA t OFFERS GREATER SECURITY TO DEPOSITERS THAN ANY * OTHER BANK IN THE COUNTY. * * I Capital Paid in $200,000.00 I Shareholders' Liability. 200.000.00 I Surplus and Profits 195,000.00 — $595,000.00 | f Assets over $2,500,000.00 f $ Combined wealth of Stockholders $10,000,000.00. * * * INTEREST paid on time deposits, subject to withdrawal at any time * I without notice.
