COLOR BLIND PEOPLE.
Their Affliction On line* Them to Do
Queer Thing's at Time*.
A well known oculist, while discuss-
Ing some of the various defects of the
human eye which arc- not noticeable to
the ordinary observer, had tins to say
about color blind people:
i ' The world must be a curious place
to color blind people, of whom there
are forty males and three females to
every thousand persons. Some are
blue-yellow blind, and everything
seems either red, green or gray to
theui. Others are red-green blind, and
all things appear to them to be yellow,
blue or gray of various shades, and oth
ers again perceive no distinction of col
or at all, but the whole world wears
an unchanging aspect of dull gray.
"To these last a visit to a picture
gallery would reveal merely a collec
tion of engravings or photographs. But
the two former have the compensation
of seeing their own two colors much
more brightly than ordinary people.
"The color blind do extraordinary
things at times. An officer of the navy
went one day to buy material for a
coat, vest and trousers. lie bought a
blue coat and red trousers, believing
them of the same color. A British ad
miral painted a landscape and was
very proud of his performance, but he
made the tree red, thinking it the same
color as green. When he purchased a
pair of trousers he chose green ones,
suspecting them to be brown.
"An architect's pupil, being directed
to copy the picture of a brown house,
made the house green, the sky scarlet
and the roses bine.
"A postoffice clerk was always short
in his accounts because he could not
rflistingulsh the different colored
stamps, and a sedate Quaker has been
known to buy a green coat for himself
and a red gown for his wife, thinking
they were both brown.
"If you see a man in the street with
a preposterous display of colors, char
itably believe lrim to be one of the col
or blind.
"Just why the eyes of women are
less defective In the matter of distin
guishing colors than those of men is
one of the tilings in nature that are
unexplained. The construction is the
same, yet woman's superiority in
matching colors has always been rec
ognized even where man has had the
advantage of long experience."—^Cin
cinnati Commercial Tribune.
"Winter Fodder In Kashmir.
In Kashmir they have a novel rnetli
»i of putting fodder up for winter use.
The country lies fli a valley among the
Himalayas. The chief industry of the
people consists iu raising fine wool and
In making this into fabrics which have
carried the name of the country all
over the world. As in winter snow lies
some five or six yards deep, supplies of
hay are hung among the branches of
trees, where they are easily reachediby
the flocks of sheep.
Xotlilng In It.
Two men were lashing the air violent
ly and hurling epithets at each other.
"Hold on," said a passerby to his
companion. "Let's wait and see the
scrap."
They stood and watched for a mo
ment until It became evident that one
of the disputants was afraid and the
other "dasaent."
"Come on," said the companion. "It's
only a scrap> of conversation." —Brook-

SHELLFISH LANGUAGE.
Cvriona Clicking; Sounds Heard on
the Water at MKht.
Most seamen will tell of curious click
ing sounds lward on calm nights at sea,
and the origbi of the nolse seems so al
together unaccountable that it has of
ten created same alarm among super-
A distinguished naturalist made a
careful study of the sounds on many
occasions and found that it was not a
sustained note, but made up of a multi
tude of tiny ones, each clear and dis
tinct in itself and ranging from a high
treble down to a bass. When the ear
was applied to the gunwale of the boat
the sound grew more intense, and in
some places as the boat moved on it
could not be hoard at all.
On other occasions the sounds resem
bled the tolling of bolls, the booming of
guns and the notes of an a?olian harp.
For a long time he was unable to
trace the cause, but at length discov
ered that the sounds were made by
shellfish, hundreds of them opening
their shells and closing them with
sharp snaps. The noise, partly muffled
by the water, sounded indescribably
weird. He was finally led to the con
clusion that as the shellfish made the
sounds they probably had some mean
ing and that the clicks might possibly
be a warning of danger when the shal
low water was disturbed by the boat.
Girls Kept In Cases.
It is said that the people of New
Britain have a peculiar custom of con
fining their girls in cages until they
reach marriageable age. These cages
are built of wood cut from the palm
tree and are inside the rude houses.
Outside each house is a fence of wick
erworlc made of reeds. The girle are
caged at the age of two or throe and
are never allowed to go out of the
house, yet they seem strong and
healthy.

A Record In Titles. ,
The Duke of Fife holds a record. lie [
Is the only man who has ever been
known to change his rank while he ate I
his breakfast. After the marriage cere
mony had been celebrated in the private |
chapel of Buckingham palace, on the
morning of July 27, 1889, he led his ' I
royal bride into the dining room, where '
the wedding breakfast was laid, as an I

the late queen, in raising her glass to ]
the toast of the young couple, con- |
ferred a dukedom upon him, and thus
as he ate he passed through two ranks 1
of the peerage—surely the quickest pro- '
motion ever recorded.
Favorite Itoyal Dishes. ,
The German emperor Is particularly 1
fond of thrush salmi, a kind of stew
made of thrushes. Queen WUhelmlna :
of Holland prefers roast joints, and the 1
king of Spain likes underdone beef. I
Custards are the favorites of the king
of Italy, while cod fried in oil finds
favor with the czar of Russia, and mut
