Bakers town, Pa. 'his prize roses. A Little Secret That \V«» < uullded the Wrong Man. An amusing incident is reported In connection with a small flower show lu the north of England. One of the classes—cut roses—was open only to cottage gardeners within a certain ra dius, and the winner turned up In ft laborer whom wc will call Sandy. The lucky Individual was In high feather and hung about near his exhibit all the afternoon receiving the congratulations of his friends. "Beautiful roses," remarked a well dressed stranger to Sandy. "They tell me. however, that if Briggs had been qualified to enter he would have beat- ; en you." Now, Briggs was the rose grower par excellence In the neighborhood; but, unfortunately for him, he was j just outside the radius. "Briggs be hanged:" ejaculated San- j dy. "He ain't got no better roses than them!" "That's nonsense!" retorted the stranger. "Briggs' roses are the talk i of the district." Sandy still stuck to his point and be came quite confidential. "Between you and lue," he whispered eventually, "Briggs ain't got no better roses than them, 'cos them's his! He couldn't en ter himself, so he gave me the pick of I feis garden." The stranger. was satisfied, and it ! was only afterward that Sandy dis covered to his cost that he had con fided his secret to a member of the show committee.—London Tit-Bits. A Woodland Echo. As became the idle man having the time of his life in the primeval forests of the Temagamle reserve in Canada, the clerk of the New York court of special sessions was praclously Inclined to Instruct the workers In camp. These, says the New York Tribune, were two young, unknown men who, with a canoe and a camping outfit, were like wise seeking baokwood experience. He came upon one of them baking bread in a portable aluminium oven before a smoldering log flre. "Ah," said the clerk, assuming a re clining position of graceful ease, "bak ing bread, I see." "Yes. It doesn't come up for a cent." "You see," continued the clerk, with rising wisdom, "the baking powder. which contains cream of tartar, liber ates when heated n certain amount of carbonic acid gas, which" — "Oh, don't talk shop!" interrupted the cook. "I hate it out here!" "Oh, you do!" the clerk observed, as tonished. "What business are you in, may I ask?" "I'm an assistant professor of chem istry at Yale." Rico at Wedding". Like roast pig, the origin of throwing rice at weddings is Chinese, and the legend is scarcely less worthy of Charles Lamb: "A famous sorcerer named Chao became Jealous of the power of another sorcerer, a woman, and, conceiving a plan to destroy her, he persuaded her parents to bestow her upon his supposed son. The crafty Chao chose the most unlucky day for the wedding, the day when the 'Golden Pheasant' was in the ascendant, so'that when the bride entered the red chair the spirit bird would destroy her with his powerful beak. But Peachblossom gave directions to have rice thrown out at tho door, and she passed out un harmed while the spirit bird was de vouring it." Crashing a Bore. John G. Whittier, the Quaker poet, once in describing the usages of the Quakers in regard to "speaking in meetings" said that sometimes the vol untary remarks were not quite to the edification of the meeting. It once hap pened that a certain George C. grew rat jer wearisome in his exhortations, and his prudent brethren, after solemn consultation, passed the following reso lution: "It is the sense of this meeting that George C. be advised to remain silent until such time as the Lord shall speak through him more to our satis faction and profit." The Throat and Tonsil*. A simple gargle for a sore throat may be made by adding fifteen drops of refined carbolic acid to a quart of water. Remember to shake thorough ly before using—otherwise it will be useless—and gargle four or five times a day. In case of swollen tonsils a tea spoonful of powdered tannin dissolved in a tumbler of water forms an excel lent gargle, which should be used ev ery two hours. A gargle of perman ganate of potash, not too strong, is al so excellent for use in cases of mil.l sore throat. Burke in his letter on "Natural So ciety" says that Sylla destroyed 300,000 men in each of three battles, one being at Cheronea. The Persians are said to have lost men at Tlatica. II Chronicles xiii, 17, records 500,000 slain on oiw side, which, however, may not have oeen in a single battle. I Kings xx, 2t>, tells of 100,000 men being killed on one side in a single day. FREEZING CAVERNS. lulitrrranrun ('liven 'l'hnt Are Lln«d With Crystalline* lee. There are deep cavities and tunneled recosscs in the earth far away from sunlight and held in the tight embrace of rock.v strata where secret hoards of glittering ice lind habitation all the year round. Yet down in these queer places the Ice is as pure and crystalline as any that nature maintains in the op: n air; moreover, it occurs on a truly grand and massive scale. Imagine thick underground ice walls and lloors and craftily fissured col umns beautiful in shape and color Btr .lining from roof to l'.oor of lofty ro< k chambers! And under the slow drip, drip, drip of percolating water this same ice learns to fashion itself into cave adornments frozen water drops, curling slopes, stalactites and stalagmites of fantastic shape and rainbow hues. Subterranean cold waves, or "gla ciers," as they are frequently called, crop up ill some 300 scattered localities in Kurope, Asia and America, but all, with rare exceptions, whether true ice caverns or grottoes and deep hollows, ar<> confined to tho north temperate re gions of these continents—that is, to places where there is a sufficiently low temperature at some portion of the year to reach freezing point and render snowfall possible.
