Witch Island was known as "Stew

Beaver island, in John's bay, from

Another reason for the name Mouse

Tbr Letter »S" In Motker.
It lias biv-n pointed out ns a curious
fact that the letter "M" In almost all
known languages Kncllsh. French,
Latin, Spanish. fJr'M-k, Hebrew, i'hl
new and the others Is to be found In
the word which stands for mother or
nurse. Perhaps this Is owing to ita
representing a sound which exists in
every sjaikeu speech and has the same
pronunciation in them all. It Is also
exceedingly easy to utter and Is one of
the first sounds that children make,
and It therefore unturally enters into
the apjtellation given to the nursing
parent In the first cries of recognition
and affection. There is no doubt at all
that "ma" and tin- other baby names
for mother originated directly from the
child.
