i h*l r, v. 11/K N. THDRBDAY MARCH 27, 1 901. Her Beat Front. It was at Nantucket one summer that t city visitor learned a new way of displaying one's personal adornments during a call upon one of the native Nantucketers. It was a nice old lady who was entertaining the strangers, and she was very anxious that they ihould see everything to advantage and that even she herself should make is good an appearance as possible. Un fortunately she had not been forewarn ed of the visit and was not entirely prepared for it. "If I had only known you were com ing," she said apologetically, "I should have had on my best front. This is anly my second best, but you can see the other when you go out, for I al ways keep it in the front room." Surely enough, on taking their leave, j the visitors were piloted through the front room, and there in the inside of j the melodeon, when a Jjeavy green ba rege veil was carefully lifted, a nicely waved hair piece was to be seen, the hostess' best "front." Spoke Too Late. The good minister of a Scottish par- ! Ish had once upon a time a great wish ! for an old cou;>!e to become teetotal- ! ers. which they were in nowise eager to carry out. After much pressing, however, they consented, laying down as a condition that they should lie al lowed to keep a bottle of "Auid Kirk" for med:r::!.-:l purposes. About a fort- ! night afterward John began to feel his | resolution weakening, but he was de termined not to be the first to give way. In ::h Slier week, however, he col lapsed entirely. "Jenny, woman," he said, "'l've MI awfu* pain in my heid. Ye rnk-ht gic> lue a wee drappie an' see gin it'll dee uie ony guid." "Well, guc'.eniau," she replied, "ye're owre late o' askln', for ever sin' that bottle c:iuf into the boose I've been bothered s;;e \vi' pains i' my heid 't is a' dune, tn' there's nae drappie left." The IS iik Dible. The bug Bible was printed in 154'J by the authority of Edward VI., and Its curiosity lies in the rendering of the fifth verse of the Ninety-first I'salm. which, as we know. runs. "Thou slialt not be afraid fir the ter ror by night nor fcr arrow which llleth by day." but in the above ver sion ran. "So thou shalt not nede to be afraid of any bugges by night." Ludicrous as this sounds, it is not etymologically without justification. "Bug" is derived from the Welsh word "bwg." which meant a hobgoblin or terrifying spejter. a signification trace able In the word commonly in use to day—"bugbear"—and Shakespeare one* or twice uses-the word In this primary sense, notably when he makes Hamlet say, "Such bugs and goblins in my life." Fine China. Fine china needs care in washing and drying and should never be placed In nervous or indifferent hands. Treat ed lovingly, china will last for years and even generations. Only a piece should be put In the tub at one .time, the -soap should be made into suds be fore putting anything in, and the wa ter must be very warm, not hot. Fi nally rinse in water that's Just the same—warm. A good supply of fine, soft towels Is a necessity, and. thus equipped, the washing of china is not a hard task. China will shine beauti fully If wiped out of clear warm wa ter. Looking and Seeing. There Is much in knowing how fo see sights. The discreet and skillful person, when confronted with a varie ty of attractions, will carefully select those that are for him the best and then will devise means to see them with the least wear and tear. But there are excitable people who set out to see evcrythingi tire themselves out, see only half of anything and are dis satisfied In the end. . Eaally a Good Thins. "Did you say that hair restorer Is a good thing?" asked the patron. "Yes." answered the barber, with some slight hesitation: "It's a good thing. We sell several bottles a week at a dollar a bottle." "But how do you 'know It's a good thing?" "Because the profit on every bottle la 75 cents.' —Washington Star. Ills Fortune. "Who is that handsome young man standing over there?" Inquired an old gentleman rich old lady at a party. "That's my "son-in-law. He's a very brilliant young man; made a large for tune by the law." "Indeed!" said the old gestleman. How's that?" "The law made him my daughter's husband."—London Answers. Her Pet Pie. A young woman In London took a pig in infancy and brought it up, as she says, "like a Christian." Complaint was made to the authorities the other day, and the sanitary officers who went to investigate found the pig In bed be tween two white sheets, with its head 1 on a pillow and Its body covered with a white lace counterpane. Cnrloaa Way Some British Officers Discovered This Fact. It is • prcbable that few occidental cooks who prepare rice in various forms for diet- are aware that In dis carding the water In which It ls«bolled they are wasting what Is regarded by the oriental as the most nutritious part of the food. This fact was curiously proved some years since when a de tachment of Europeans and native troops In India found themselves be leaguered In a fort with insufficient ra tions, even of rice, to enable them to hold out until a force could march to their relief. It was when the officers were seri ously debating this problem that the natives approached them with what was regarded as a curious solution of the difficulty. If, proposed the latter, the Europeans took all the rice, they, the natives, would be quite content with the water in which it was boiled. The suggestion, in plnce of any better, was adopted, when it was rcmafked that while the Europeans found it dif ficult to maintain their strength on full rations of rice the natives lost none of their stamina by several weeks' diet on the water. When the proposal was made, the action of the natives was praised as one of great devotion to their superiors, but the sentiment was somewhat mollified when the discov ery was made that the natives wera quite aware that the principal nourish ment lay In the water. Since that time Europeans in the ori ent, following the custom of the na tives, have Kiven rice water to pa tients, particularly in cases of cholera, as a last resort when no other food can be retained In the stomach and usually with good results. But the natives al ways value this water so highly that it Is never thrown away. In fact, it would surprise many cooks to discover how much may be don* with this apparently worthless stock. If tlie rice is cooked In the oriental fashion—that Is, boiled only so long that each grain comes out of the pan separate and not as a sodden mass— the water when strained off and per mitted to cool will become a Jelly ap proaching the consistency of blanc mange. To suit the occidental palate the water should be flavored with an extract cr otherwise the Jelly may have rather an insipid taste. i R-R-TIME-TABLES I> « W It It » Trains leave Bntler for Allegheny, i local time, at 6:25, 8:05, 9:20, and 11:05 а. m. and 4:00, and 5:53, p. ui The9:2o and 11:20 a. m. trains make the ran in 1 hour and 20 minutes and the 4:ootrain in an hoar and a half.
