When one of the men who stood aside
)br John M. Greer ten years ago took
him to task for his treachery now, he
was informed that "no young man
could afford to take the office of Judge
of Butler county for but one term."
"But," said the other man "We are
all old now."
"Oh, well, Mr. , you'll have to
shinter for yourself," replied Greer.
As we have Had one or more Greers
in office here almost jontinnously for
thirty years, besides qge or two in
Washington, would it not be a good
idea, (for a time at least) to allow them
to "shinter" for themselves.
Butler May Be Fortunate.
A large manufacturing concern has
secured options on the McElroy, Mc-
Shane, Kellerman, Bredin and Duffy
properties, in all kbout 200 acres, in the
valley southwest of town at prices rang
ing from |l4O to 1800 an acre. The
land secured includes the Fair Grounds.
The options run for sixty days and if
the company accepts locates
here, Butler will receive the greatest
boom in its history. It is said that
several other towns are striving to have
the concern locate With them. One of
them offering a free site and some
bonus. No extra'inducements are ask
ed here except that land prices be not
run up. Butler's unusually good rail
roa<kfacilitiee and cheap fuel is what
attracts here, but still the other towns
may capture the prize by extras. This
is a good time for all to pull together
and work for Butler.
WASHINGTOJTNOTES.
Congress made considerable headway,
last week—the Senate passed the ship
subsidy bill, the one for the protection
of the President of the United States
and the measure abolishing all of the
Spanish war taxes. The House disposed
of the river and harbor appropriations.
The Schley controversy was thrown out
of Congress by the action of the Honse
Naval Committee in refusing to take it
up. The Senate Committee on Privi
leges and Elections actually brought op
for consideration the proposition adopt
ed by the House for the election of
Senators by a popular vote, and an
agreement was reached by the caucus
of Republicans of the House upon the
Cuban tariff.
There is some opposition in the
Danish Parliament to the ratification of
the treaty which provides for the sale to
the United States of the Danish posses
sions in the West Indies It was
promptly approved in the Folkething
or lower House by the large majority
of 88 to 7, bnt in the Landstbing or
upper honse ai antagonistic spirit was
developed.
Twenty-five citizens of East End,
Pittsbtrg, were to Washington last
Thursday, and prousted against the
re-appointment of Postmaster Holliday
of Pittsburg to Rep. Dalzell.
On Friday the House passed the
River and Harbor bill, and the Senate
a war tax reduction bill. Senator Quay
returned from Florida and the report
that he would interfere in the Pittsburg
P. O. matter created a sensation.
Tuesday afternoon Secretary Root
made public his order to General Wood,
directing him to turn over the control
and Government of Cuba to its people
on May 20 next. The order requires
the Cuban Government to assume all
treaty obligations %nd directs General
Wood to continue a small artillery force
to avoid leaving the island entirely de
fenseless until tne Cnban Government
shall have opportunity to organize its
own force.
General Wood is also directed to con
vene the Cnban Congress before May
20. He is also directed to consult with
President-elect Palma and substitute
such persons as he shall desire for those
nsw holding official positions in Cuba-
NEGOTIATIONS have been completed
in New York City, whereby Eastern
capitalists have secured options on a
number of the largest hardware con
cerns in the United States. The deal
involves about SSO,OOO,O(XX It is said
that almost the entire business of the
country is to be controlled by a single
corporation. It is stated that at least
five of the largest jobbers in the United
States have offered options on their
StOCk.
POLITICAL.

like a tide toward Cameron. It is heard
that the deal which will get together .
all the contending factions will be to 1
pot np the ex-Senator for Governor. ,
Various reasons are assigned for this
general affection toward the son of his
father; bnt singularly enough the avail
ability of his barrel is not mentioned
The boom, whether it lasts a week or
for the seven months between now and
election, is a singular example of the
workings of the political mind. Not to
gQ back to the 80s, when the rise of
Quay was really due to the evidence
that the Cameron*machine had become
so nnendnrable as to necessitate a more
intelligent dictation, it raises from com
paratively recent events two cogent in
quiries. The first is whether party
principles have anything to do with the
nominations of the State machine, and
the second is whether the Republican
party of Pennsylvania is a sound money
party.
If the ex-United States Senator, who
did all that his vote could do while in
the Senate to land the country on the
silver basis prior to 1896. is an eligible
leader for the Republicans of this State,
what objection can the Pennsylvania
Republicans make to Bryan?"—Ex.
The Westmoreland and Butler Co.
Congressional Committees met in Pitts
burg, Tuesday, and again failed to
agree on anything, and with the stand
the Bntler Committee has taken, prob
ably, never will agree.
Lebanon county is the scene of an in
teresting political fight, this week,
which will end with the primary to be
held, Saturday. There are two tickets
in the field. One set of delegates is for
Elkin and the other, backed by General
Gobin, is for Watres for Governor.
On Tuesday General Gobin issued the
following card: "If yon endorse the
Stone-Elkin administration,vote for the
Elkin delegates. If yon do not, and you
are opposed to commercial politics and
appropriation rake-offs for private gain
and for Campaign funds, then seize your
opportunity at the Republican primaries
on Saturday to register your protest by
voting for the Watres delegates."
The Elkin delegates that night replied
as follows: "Why do you call it the
Stone-Elkin administration? Why not
the Stone-Gobm administration? If
yon do not endorse it why do you stay
in it? Why don't you resign?
"Which of the following are appro
priation rake-offs for pri\*te gain or for
campaign purposes and which come un
der thenead of commercial politics?
"Holding the offices of Lieutenant
Governor. State Senator and Brigadier
General and drawing the salaries for all
of them at the same time?
"Drawing a salary as State Senator
without rendering any service therefor?
"Receiving $3,000 for clerk hire from
the State without paying it out for
clerical assistance."

Working plans for the new Capitol
will not be completed for three months
This means that work on the new build
ing will not begin until that time. An
important change has been made in the
original design which calls for altera
tions in the Legislative halls so that
they will correspond with those in the
building which was burned.
Other changes will have to be made
in the main building in order to accom
modate the various departments in tl e
two remaining brick bnildings. The
latter will be torn down and they will
be accommodatednn the main portion
until the new building is ready. These
removals will be made as soon as possi
ble.
It has been definitely decided upon
that the outer portion of the building
will be granite A proposition has also
been made and meets with much favor
for the purchase of adjoining property
to the Capitol grounds, in order to make
the latter more symmetrical.
SEVEN HEDIN, who started out some
time ago to explore Central Asia, has
returned to Cashmere, after stirring
adventures in Thibet. At present no
definite information can be obtained: for
Hedin merely sent a telegraphic des
patch to the King of Sweden giving a
bare outline of his adventures. Like
many another explorer before him, he
could not resist the temptation of try
ing to enter the forbidden city of Lhasa.
Disguise* as a pilgrim, he succeeded in
approaching within a few miles ofc his
goal. The sudden discovery that a
stranger was near threw the town into
consternation. Hedin was at once cap
tured and imprisoned. It seems that
his captors were more merciful than
they were to Landor: for he was in nJ
way injured. Ijy the express command
of the Dallai Lama, Hedin was well
treated.
Not content with the failure of -his
first attempt, Hedin tried a second time
to enter the'town, Without any warn
ing 500 soldiers attacked him, and de
stroyed a large part of his caravan.
His ardor was then so far cooled that he
determined to return, after rescuing his
notebooks and the data which he had

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES.
A person who was known inCanandai
gua. N- Y. for five years as William
C. Howard died suddenly Wednesday
night, and later it developed that the
supposed man was a woman. Howard
who was about 50 years old and who
was emploved as a farm hand went there
five years ago with a woman who was
known as Mrs Howard. Two children
were born to the supposed wife.
Smallpox has broken ont in the Alle
gheny Connty Workhouse. Edward
Shanks, a prisoner, with symptoms of
the malady, was removed from the insti
tution at Clareinont Saturday to the Mu
nicipal Hospital in the Thirteenth ward,
Pittsburg. Dr. B. A Booth of the Bureau
of health visited the workhouse during
the afternoon and established a strict
quarantine of all the inmates who have
recently come in contact with Shanks.
Rendered a physical wreck by sick
ness. Miss Svbilla Trimble, a daughter
of John Trimble of Upper St. Clair
twp , Allegheny county, and a sister of
John G. Trimble, engineer at Highland
reservoir No. 2, ended her life last
Saturday by drinking carbolic acid. Mi;-s
Trimble chose a doorstep on Centre
avenue, far from her home, to end her
life. She died ten minutes after being
found.
Florence Burns, the 19-year-old girl of
Brooklyn, who for five weeks was in
custody under the accusation of having
murdered her sweetheart, Walter T.
Brooks, in the Glen Island Hotel, win
discharged last Saturday by Justice

entered the front room of the residence
of John Cline.in whose family she lived,
and found a burglar in the act of taking
Mrs. Cline's purse, containing $55. In
stead of screaming or fainting she
grabbed n heavy poker and compelled
the robber to replace the purse in the
open drawer, which he was glad to do.
He then hurriedly made his escape
Miss King was the only member of the
family about the house at the time.

at 6 o'clock Wednesday evening at
Capetown, aged 47 years. He was
