Tie man who can hardly crawl, and has just strength to get through a day s work, has no itrength left for family life. He wants to be quiet; to be alone, out of sight and sound of everybody. What a difference between such a man and the healthv, hearty man, ■who romps with his children and ri'les his la-Jghing baby to "Banbury Cross." What makes the difference? Usually disease of the stomach, involving the entire digestive and nutritive system. Dr. Pitrce'i Golden Medical Discovery cures diseases of the stomach and other organs of digestion and nutrition. POTATO GROWING. Latest Methods Tn tlie r«mon* Arooi took Dlatrict ol Maine. Maine farmers are supposed to un derstand potash culture pretty thor oughly. and from one of them, through The New England Homestead, comes the following account of latest methods In this line, with special reference to those used in the famous Aroostook re in preparing the ground for potato rultlrat: n to obtain the best results it should be well plowed In the fall, and If n .inure is to !*? used this should be spr -1 In the spring after the ground Is sufficiently dry. If s 1 land or lan* In "ned to be heavy, carefully c-rc~s ». ; iR( ] thoroughly harrow, using if ueeessary a leveler or fine tooth harrow in order that the soil may be well pul verized, after which planting may be done. Of course it is well understood that good crops cannot be raised from poor seed, and the v.ide awake farmer will plant only strong, vigorous seed potatoes raised on land other than his own. Increase in crop will pay the ex tra cost of the best seed many times over. It has been clearly demonstrat ed by the different experiment stations In cutting seed potatoes that the high est yield per acre Is obtained from sets of four eyes to the piece. The plan of using rather heavy land, especially if clayey, for the Trowing of potatoes would not ordinari. -' be a good one, at least except for rtr> -asons. It would certainly be baz:.;us on such land to manure in drill-. : it would be likely to resnlt in a en ; ily affected by rot. There are but f- w varieties of potatoes raised in New .England that! are not very susceptible to dlsea-e if planted on very heavy land with barn dressing in drills. These Include among others 811.-.n Triumph, or. as it is some times called, Stray Beauty, White I!li.-s or Pride of the South, Rural New York er, Great Divide and Dakota Red. The general rule throughout the potato growing section of Aroostook county i to use fertilizer for the raising of pota toes and to grow them on light, loamy soil, the preparation of the ground be ing practically the same in any case. The heavy land and barn dressing Is devoted almost exclusively to the hay crop. No progrr sslve fanner would think of using a ingle furrow plow for earthing up or hoeing potatoes. It was the general practice for several years in the early history of Aroostook pota to raiding to plant potatoes in drills, covering or splitting the ridge* with double horse hoe and using brush har row after planting to equalize the depth of seed, but to compete with oth er sections and make potato growing a financial success it Is now nec>f..-;arj to use Improved machinery, such as the planter, bicycle hoe, sprnyer and digger. Indeed, the ordinary amount of help that the average farmer com mands makes it Impossible to take care of a large acreage without adopting Improved methods. Snlphnr For Potato flcab. Sulphur employed in considerable quantities upon soils which are acid or which coniain but n limited excess of basic ingredients is capable of causing much subsequent Injury to crops, the extent of the same being greatest upon acid or neutral soils. The application of sulphur to soils for preventing potato scab, regardb s of the character of the reaction of the soil. Is liable to occasionally cause much Injury. Sulphate of ammonia, which has a high manurial value by virtue of its nitrogen, gives promise of being far more satisfactory and economical than flowers of sulphur as a means of less ening the tendency to scab In contami nated soils which are favorable to the growth of the fungus. The ammonia of the sulphate of ammonia Is changed to nitric acid, and this, together with the sulphuric acid thereby liberated, decomposer carbonates, forming com pounds which are taken uii by plants or gradually removed by leaching. The large amount of sulphuric acid obtain ed from the sulphate of ammonia as a residual may be considered as costing nothing, since the ammonia returns Its cost l>y Its action as a ma nure. Sulphur, on the other hand, Is much mow expensive than sulphate of ammonia and has little If any, even in direct, manurial value Sulphate of ammonia, particularly If u ed in con nection with muriate of potash upon soils where the tendency to scab Is great, ls»capable of wonderfully Im proving them In this particular. To ae comp'ilsh this wood ashes, lime, bnslc slog, stable manure, and undis solved phosphates should be avoided. Acid phosphate should In such cases be used as a source of phosphoric achD— Rhode Island Station. 110 I>rl lli/irrn Convpy V*ofHonf Arsenic pofnonlng from beer drinking has recently created quite a sensation In Kngland, and In necking for the cause the fnrf seems to have been tahilxhed that the poisoning occurred only through beer that wa brewed solely fmni malt and hops. The Kng llsh I.a ncet suggests as the source of the poison the use of artificial manures which contain arsenic In easily soluble form. It remarks that supcrphospha: • of lime, the basis of artificial manure, is produced by Ui«. action of common oil of vitriol on ordinary bone ash; that It has been established that plants to which arsenical manure Is applied lake up ars«-iile in their tissues, and cab bages and turnip* gathered from fields manured with superphosphates have given unmistakable evidence of the pretence of arsenic. It I t probable, ;c- | CoMlng In this authority, that arsenic accumulate* In soil which Is constantly dressed with superphosphate, so that, plants grown on such soil would absorb arsenic and Injuriously affect t'«» health of man and animals.
