Eastern farmers, in general, allow i lie precious fluid on their farms to flo v away in creeks an<l rivers, at tlie same time carrying oft" quantities of the fertilizing material which with xv t labor and expense they had plac e! iheir land. One Ohio man at hi lias a different notion about this matter, as told in the Ohio Farmer. Several years ago his eyes were opened to the fact that a small stream which passed through his place was carrying his property away bodily, so he decided not only to stop this waste, but at the same time to make said stream serve him in dry weather. At one side Is an overflow channel, and at the other, near the bot tom, the irrigation pipe goes through. Said pipe is a common black iron pipe two inches in diameter. The reservoir covers about three fourths of an acre and is from three to eight feet deep. This gives him an abundance of water not only for irri gation, but for other uses. The iroD pipe, which is sunk in the ground deep enough to avoid freezing, is continued along the west side of cultivated land and high enough on the bank to iu sure a good flow of water through the irrigating ditches. Two inch T's are placed in the pipe at a distance of 150 feet apart, and a short pipe comes to the surface of the ground, with a key for turning on the water to irrigate any part of the field. These are indi cated by dots along the pipe line in the plan of system. The farm consists of 05 acres. Five and a half acres can be irrigated and are thus made more productive than all the balance of the farm. At pres ent a specialty is made of growing cel ery, and as this is a crop which re quires a liberal supply of water to In sure a rapid growth at certain periods the irrigating plant is very useful. The worry that an irrigation plant takes off the farmer is alone worth the cost of it even if his crops were not increased thereby. FIRE FANGED MANURE. And Farmen' Contradictory Opin ion* About It# Vaioe. Every farmer has had more experi ence than he desired with "fire fanged" manure, yet we will at time.i find farm ers who declare that they had just as good crops from it as from the best of barn manure. Commenting upon tills question of the effect of fire fa nging on the value of manure, J. F. 11. Gregory nays in American Cultivator: The action of the oxygen on the ni trogen wJiich enters into the composi tion of the manure practically destroys It in the burning process. This is real ly ail the essential Loss our manure heap lias undergone. The absence of moisture, which has been dried out by the heat, is in realit.y no loss as far as Its plant food val ae goes. The only vital change, then, in our manure is that it lias lost much of its nitrogen, the phosphoric acid and potash con tents being the same iu quantity after It has been fire fanged as they were be fore. We have not a table of analysis at hand, but it is safe to say that the ni trogen constituent of barn manure is about equal in value to the phosphoric acid ami potash elements combined. On tbfs ba.sis of value badly fire fanged manure ia cord for cord worth about balf as much as that which is in its natural condition. If it be asked how, then, can any farmer find the same value iu it as in that which has never been burned, the answer Is the same iu kind as that to be made to those who state that on their crop leached wood ashes lias as good an effect as does the unleached. It is in both cases that the crop did not need the absent element. Iu the one it was nitrogen and in the other potash. If the nitrogen burned out could be returned, then the manure would, of course, be as valuable as before. This can be done by adding fish waste, night soil or some chemical rich iu nitrogen to the manure heap, such as nitrate of soda or sulphate of ammonia. C'henp and Handy Onion Crnte*.
