Ilorse radish is grown to perfection ill Bohemia, whence large quantities ar» exported. So states Mr. David O. Falr i child, au agricultural explorer for the ' government. His account, us fallows, i of horse radish culture in the region named Is of interest to the growers of 1 the root in this country, although it Is ! doubtful whether many of them would , look favorably as a practical measure I on the hand labor Involved: A deep, loose, strong soil with plenty j of moisture is best suited to the culture | of horse radish. In the autumn the ' soil is forked over to a depth of 2 or 2i 2 feet, and well rotted barnyard ma nure Is thoroughly worked iu to the depth of a foot or more. A narrow bed, three l-i/t wide, is prepared, and In late March or early April the horse radish cuttings are planted along both edges, alternating so that they are not opposite each other across the bed. The cuttings are 11' inches long and are eet out IN inches apart. Instead of be ing placed vertically iu tin- grou. d they are planted iu an obliquely horizontal position, with the upper, larger end ' covered by ouiy three .garters to au inch of earth, while the low > r lies three or four inches deep. As a consequence of this slanting position the new roots thrown out from the lower end of the cutting, striking vertically downward, make almost a right angle with the main stent, and it is these slender roots from which the tiev. eiittmgs tor the next season's planting are made. During the summer the ground is kept free from weeds and the surface of the soil lightly stirred. Toward the end of June the bed is goue over care fully and each cutting uncovered sop arately and slightly raised out of the soil with the hand. Care Is takeu not to injure the perpendicular roots which have formed from it~ lower eud. All small rootlets are ru!»toed off from the body of the root with a woolen cloth, those that are too large to be removed in this manner being cut close with a sharp knife. A small quantity of pow dered charcoal is scattered over the cut surfaces to prevent decay. Ihe cut ting is again covered with earth as be fore. In order to keep the new roots of a uniform diameter aud to prevent their striking <le« p into the soil and becom ing too slender the beds an- sometimes underlaid with a porous cement pave ment l 1" feet below the surface of the ground. This pavement checks the growth of the roots anil causes tbem to thicken. The roots are allowed to continue growth ui i the ei-'l of Septe!!i!«er. at which time the harvest begins. The outlines tviii, h I,ave I wen two seaso' in the ground, the first as vertical roc ami tiie secoiiii in the oblique position, are by this time lartre enough for mar ket. In digging th< 1 rse radi«h a long b laded n ttock or sjiade is used, which et.aMes the digger to remove not on.v the oi: ;uely planted cutting. which is tlie marketable product, but also the ilev l.owa ,t> lower end. of which the cuttings for tin- next year arc to bo made.
