The buckwheat crop of this county,
this year, is above the average. Andy
Lemon's crop in Butler township was
2:i bushels to the a'-re.
—That was a jolly crowd of Bntlerites
fishing at Neshannock falls last week.
They report the fishing good but some
greedy fellow had denned ont the
stream with a sein and there was not
much left to catch.
The three Sutton brothers John
Ziegler, Paul Shaffner and some others
with a pack of dogs went after coons
around Lcota Saturday night and after
many exciting incidents bagged two.
They got home in time for breakfast
Sunday morning.
Prospect Academy opened Tnesday
under Prof. V. A. Green, with twenty
five students in attendance. The
cnriculnin includes academic normal
and college preparatory courses. The
officers of the Academy board this year
are President, J W. Heyl; Secretary,
,F. P. Critchlow and Treasurer. T. I).

The Prospect Odd Fellows have
built themselves a hall this summer
which they have every reason in the
world to be proud of. It is a two story
frame, 40x70 feet, adjoining the Post
office, es|>ecially constructed to accom
modate a lodge, ar.d costing nearly
S4OOO. The hall will 1k; dedicated some
time in October.

Fifty year* ago a lot of men from
this vielnity were crossing the western
plains on their wav to California. One
of them told bin companions that he in
tended to shoot the first Indian he Maw,
and wax warned not to do so. The first
one he got a shot at happened to be a
fupiaw. and he shot and killed her. The
Indians surrounded the camp arid de
manded the man who did the shooting,
nnder penalty of killing the whole
Mpiad. He was given tip. and the
Indians took him and tortured him. It
is said that they skinned him alive
The White Le:id Company has par
chased six more acres from Judge Hre
din.which runs their gronnd to the Ues

the creek. The company now has 10
acres. The contract for the buildings
have heen let to Contractor Fair of
Hlnirsville and he with Architect Han
nab will start the work of construction
at once. The largest building will be
on ground purchased from Bredln, hav
ing Willow St. on its west side. Its
dimensions will he l,'J?x2lH feet. Two
other buildings will Is: put up on the

The officials of the new railroad ex

between Allegheny and Rochester. N.

of the redaction the employes decided

totally blind and yet he supjsirts him
self and mother by weaving carpet.
He has woven 1100 yards since February
last. Mr. Shnll also inaket brooms, is
mi accomplished, musician, has read the
Bible, Irvine's Sketch Rook and other
works by means of raised letters, and is
a very pb asaiit person to meet.

An interesting specimen of the crim
inal class was placed in jail at Greens
burg, last week. Peter Zimmerman
has made a life long busiuessof stealing
horses. an<l boasts that he has stolen
nearly l»>o horses, and has spent 4o years
in prison.-, covering a period of 63 years
of his life, fie is 75 years old. and on
his birth da j" and in a new prison be
came reminiscent. He smiled at the
thought thaf h" had never received over
14 months as a sentence for a single
animal. He was sent to the penitentiary
twice from Washington county, twice
from Fayette and from Butler. Law
rence arid other counties in Western
Pennsylvania.
At Harrisburg, last Friday, tb<* al
leged legislative bribers were granted
another respite. The trial of the cases
against them has been postponed until
the Jannar\ term of the Dauphin coun
ty court. The reason assigned is that
the criminal list for the September term
is the largest, with one exception, in
the county's history.

at Grove City, last week, the pastoral
relation between Rev. H. E. Snyder
and the Plains Grove church was dis
solved. to go into effect April 1. 1900.
He was dismissed to the Kittanning
