No Lady Would Do
Such a Thing.
No ladv would take her watch when
out of order, to the first person who dis
played the sitfn " Watches Regulated
an.f Repaired." But she would carefully
enquire for a man whose acknowledged
skill entitled him to take in charge the
delicate mechanism.
How much more careful should a
woman be, when she herself is disor
dered, not to entrust the delicate and
complex mechanism of her being to the ,
first man or woman who displays the j
sign " Medical Advice Given." So sign I
is to be trusted which says "Medical j
Advice Given " and stops there. Medi- j
cal advice can be given only by a phy
sician. An accredited physician will put !
his title with his name. Suppose a sign
reads, "Medical Advice Given by a
Man." What woman would not in
stantly say. "The fact of being a man
doesn't qualify him to give medical ad
vice He must be a physician to do
that." But suppose the sign reads:
" Medical Advice Given by a Woman."
Is not the fact just as patent that being
a woman does not qualify her to give
medical advice. The woman must be
a physician to do that. Medical advice
given by an unskilled woman is just as
dangerous as if given by an unskilled
man.
In inviting sick and ailing woman to
consult him by letter without charge,
Dr. Pierce points to an experience and
practice of over thirty years, devoted
specially to diseases peculiar to women.
In that time Dr. Merer and his associate
staff of medical specialists have success
fully treated more than half a million
women. All correspondence is treated
as strictly private and sacredly confiden
tial. Letters are promptly answered, and
the answers are mailed in perfectly plain
envelopes, without any printing upon
them. Write without fee and without
fear to Dr. R. V. Pierce, chief consult
ing physician to the Invalid*' Hotel and
Surgical Institute, Buffalo, N V.

Polly at the l'hoif.
One West Madison street druggist
jogt a cnstoiner through his fondness for
pets He has a large green parrot, and
the cage is hnng near the telephone,
with the result that Polly has becolne
quite proficient in "telephone talk" and
furnishes much amusement to the cus
tomers who have the time to stop and ,
listen.
The other day a stylishly dressed
young lady came rustling into the store j
and asked permission to use the phone. I
The druggist pointed to the rear of the .
etire, and she started in that direction. I
The store was rather dark, and when I
she heard some one apparently talking
into the receiver she seated herself on a
chair to wait.
"Hello central—hello, heller—yes,
give me four-double-eight express. Yes,
hello; who is that? Oh, yes; what, yes;
hello, I say; no, I didn't get that; is
that so? Well, gcodby ; ring off. Hello,
central; hello, hello; give me"—and so
on and so on through several repeti
tions.
Then she rose and advanced with a
etately air to the clerk and asked if he
thought "that person" intended to use
the telephone all day.

Wanted to S*« Thnt Foot.
On the principle that to some persona
even old stories are new, this one, of
the royal princelings of England, is
given in Mr. G. W. E. Russell's recent
book, "Collections and Recollections:"
Au English gentleman who had a de
formed foot was going to visit the
qneen at Osborne, and before his arrival
the queen ani Prince Albert debated
whether it would be well to warn the
Prince of Wales and the princess royal
of his physical pecnliarity, so as to
avoid their making embarrassing re
marks, or to leave it to their own good
feeling.
The latter conrse was adopted. Lord
duly arrived. The foot elicited no
remark from the royal children, and the
visit passed off with success. Next day
the princess royal asked the queen:
"Where is Lord ?"
"He has gone back to London, dear."
"Oh, what a pity! He had promised
to show Bertie and me hie foot!"
They had canght him in a quiet spot
and mado their own terms with the
captive.
Ilia Half War Scheme,
Not long ago a Pittsburg life insur
ance agent persuaded a Chinaman to
|ake out a policy of $5,000. The latter
bad no clear idea of the transaction,
bnt understood that on paying the
premiums promptly he would be enti
tled to $5,000 some time. He began
bothering the agent for the money ufter
a couple of weeks had passed, and the
agent tried to explain to him that he
would have to die before he could get
it. The Chinaman fell down a cellar
way and was badly hurt. His friends
tried to attend to hint without calling
in a doctor. When they did call one in
two days later, the doctor was angry
"Why didn't you call me sooner?" he
"This man is half dead now."
Next day the injured man's brother
was Ht tlie iusuranee office with a claim
for $2,500. "Yon're not entitled to
anything on this," said the Insurance
agent,- "nulil the uan is dead."
"Doctol say Lim half died," an
swered tho brother. "Why ho no glet

Punishment after Death.
The body of Col. Robert G. Ingersoll
was cremated This was in accordance
with It is own ideas of the proper dispo
sition of tht* dead. Ingersoll used to
tell a story with good effect about a
sum 11 boy and a ground hog. A minis
ter riding along a country road, on
horseback, saw a boy in a fence corner
with a big club in his hand pounding a
dead ground hog with great energy.
"What are you doing?" inquired the
minister, as he stopped his horse.
"I'm ponndirig' this ground bog,"
said the boy, as he whacked away, al
most out of breath
"What fort"
"He bit me," sobbed the angry boy.
"IJnt lie's dead. What's the use of
pounding him after he's dead?"
"I—(whack) —want to (whack)
show him (whack) —that there's pun
ishinent after death!"
By the same process of reasoning,
those who predicted a particularly
warm reception for Ingersoll when he
entered the portals of the "unknown
country." may convince themselves that
they were right. And it. might also
seem to render more appropriate the
suggestion of Henry Ward Meecher,
who, after hearing Ingersoll's lecture on
the poet ISurns, proposed as an epitaph
for the great agnostic the simple words,
"Robert Burns."
