THE COUNTY CONVENTION.
Monday was a bright, sun-shiny day,
and the Republicans of Butler county
never held a more peaceable and order
ly convention.
The delegates assembled in the hall,
and the convention was called to order
shortly after 1 P. M.
L. M. Wise nominated Francis Mur
phy, Sr. of Millerstown for Temporary
Chairman; Elmer Young nominated J.
M. Thompson of Brady; the convention
voted by roll call, nnd the tally stood
40 for Murphy and 17 for Thompeon.
Mr. Murphy took the platform and
thanked the convention, and F A.
Grace of Butler and Ben Christfey of
Slipperyrock were named for Tempora
ry Secretaries, and elected by acclama
tion.
Dr. Pillow moved for a committee of
five on Resolutions, and the chair ap
pointed R. H. Pillow, W. E. Brown,
Jacob Albert. J. M. Douthett and J. A.
W.itson, who retired, and shortly af
ter brought in the following which
were adopted without dissent:
Resolutions.
We the return delegates of the Re
publican party of Bntler county in con
vention assembled, make the following
declaration;
Ist. We renew onr allegiance to the
principles of the Republican party as
set out in the platform of the last
National Republican Convention, and
congratulate the people of the country
upon the improve! condition of our in
dustrial affairs, as evidenced by the gen
eral employment of our whole j>eople
and the increase in the compensation of
onr wage earners, as we note from
time to time the advance in wages vol
untarily given by so many of our man
ufacturers to the wage earners in their
employ, which is the result of the pol
icy of the Republican party, and pledge
ourselves to support and maintain the
same.
2d. We heartily endorse the patriot
ic and American administration of Wil
liam McKinley, that has so largely
contributed to the gradual return of
prosperity to the whole country, which
is giving employment to the thousands
of unemployed that were deprived of
employment by the policy of the last
Democratic administration, and believe
that another term for our patriotic and
real American President, William Mc-
Kinley, untrammeled by the enormous
cares and responsibilities imposed by
a foreign war, would bring prosperity
to our entire country, and a full reali
zation of the benefits of the policy of
the Republican party.
Bd. We congratulate the people of
onr country upon the successful termi
nation of our war with Spain, have full
confidence in the sagacity, prudence
and patriotism of William McKinley
and his advisors, and nnder their guid
ance believe the oppressed and down
trodden people of our new possessions
will in due time be placed in position
to realize that liberty and self govern
ment they so long desired and sacrificed
■o much to obtain.
4th. We commend the candidates
this day nominated for the respective
offices to the consideration of all Re
publicans and ask the:r hearty support
at the fall elections.
W. E. Brown nominated Levi M.
Wise for County Chairman, and as no
opposition was named, he was elected
by acclamation,and the temporary secre
taries continued as permanent in same
way.
Mr. Wise was called upon for a speech
and thanked the convention for the con
fidence reiKJsed in him. Messers
Rhodes, Pisor and Storey were
appointed to assist the secretaries in
tabulating and adding the vote, and
the convention adjourned until 4 P. M.
After the Convention had reconvened
at four o'clock with a slim attendance
Josiah M. Thompson moved that the
Convention indorse the administration
of Gov. Stone. The motion was car
ried. Then Mr. Thompson rose and
stated that he had intended in hi 6 mo
tion the committee on resolutions be in
structed to retire and amend their
resolutions with the indorsement of the
State administration. Chairman Pil -
low stated that as the convention had
already passed the resolution endorsing
the State administration nothing more
was needed and moved for adjourn
ment, and the Convention adjourned.

Committee were authorized to declare

Notes.
Black's vote in Butler boro, is 551,
Hoon's 304, Kearns' '209 and Gibson's
but 92. Mart Gibson is as good a man
as any of them, bnt the contest between
Hoon and Black the two third-timers
monopolized public attention this year.
The tabulating Committee composed
of Fred Grace, Ben. Christley. I. H.
Pizor, F. A. Rhodes and Bert Storey
did good work, and finished the count
by BP. M. The result of their labors
appears in full in this paper, except the
vote on State Delegates and Coroner,
where thore were no contests.
It was a remarkable primary both in
regards to close votes and the small
number required to nominate when a
number of candidates contested for the
game office. There are but 48 votes
between Hoon and Black, and 40 be
tween McGarvey and Gillespie; and a
thousand votes nominates Adams for
Register and Recorder and eleven hun
dred nominates Turner for Clerk of
Courts.
The policy adopted by the Republi
cans in convention here Monday —that
of introducing no factional resolu
tions—was a very wise one. Had the
controlled the convention the
program would haye been an entire
ly different one regardless consequences.
No election was held in East Jackson
and Chairman Wise has appointed A.
M. Ziegler, Committeeman for the
precinct.
Monday morning Black thought he
was nominated by ten votes; but the re
turn he had received from South Penn
was incorrect; Hoon had (5H votes there
instead of 18 as reported to him: and
the missing fifty votes changed the re
sult.
The total vote polled on Sheriff is
5701—a very large vote considering the
weather of Saturday last.
Some of the best men in the county
were candidates this year, and we are
sorry they could not all reap some re
ward for the hardships they had endur
ed.
Reports of Proxy voting came from
Fairview twp. and the county C'commit
tee may be called together to investi
gate.
Several of the candidates have ex
pressed their intention of trying again
three years hence.

Roosevelt OH tl»e Canned Heel".
Col. Roosevelt of the Rough Riders,
now Gov. of N. Y. testified before the
Court of Inquiry, setting in New York
last Saturday and said in part:
"I regard the canned beef as utterly
unfit for use and an utterly unw'.iole
some ration for troops. The canned
roast beef we had at Santiago was an
unfit and an unwholesome ration. I
make that statement without equivoca
tion.
I have seen the cans, which have
Ijeen tested here, and are said to lie
wholesome, but I state most emphat
ically that the experience that I had
with my regiment with that canned
roast beef proved to me beyond the
shadow of a question that the canned
roant beef we had was at the liest un
palatable, and at the worst uneatable
and unwholesome. To the majority of
men under me it was not only so unpal
atable that but a fraction cf it could be
eaten, bnt it was sufficiently unwhole
some to tend to make many of the men
sick when they did eat it. That was
not only my experience, but it was the
exjterience of all the men with whom 1
was thrown "

practically never been touched.
THE CANDIDATES.
It is customary to give short sketch
of the successful candidates nominated
at our Republican primary. But in the
present case all the candidate# nominat
ed are so well known that tbis
would seem unnecessary.
THOMAS R. IIOON, of Centre twp, for
Sheriff, is a son of an early settler of
our county. He is an honest, worth}*
and competent man. an old soldier, and
will make a good officer.
J M. McCOLLOUGH for Protlionotary
was born and raised in Fairview twp
He has taken an active interest in poli
tics for years, and is well known to
nearly all the Republicans in the
county.
WILLIAM J. ADAMS, who received
the nomination for Register and Re
corder, is the sou of an old citizen of
Washington twp. The fact that he has
been renominated is an approval by the
people of his care and conduct of the
office he now holds.
WIII.I.IAM P. TURNER, the nominee
of Clerk of Courts, is a descendant of
an early settler of the county, and is
one of a large connection of that name.
He is worthy and competent and no
doubt will fill the office well.
DANIEL L. RANKIN, nominated for
County Treasurer also comes from the
old stock of the county. Hi' is a compe
tent and worthy man, an old Koldier
and prisoner and will be a safe custod
ian of the funds of the county.
JOHN J. MCGARVEY of Mercer twp.
and JOHN W. GILLESPIE of Middlesex
twp, the successful candidates for the
important office of County Commis
sioners, are also descendants of old citi
zens of the county, and both old sol
diers. The large vote each received for
nomination attests the opinion of the
people as to their qualifications for the
office to which they will be elected.
JAMES W. PATTERSON of Jefferson
twp. and PHILIP H. SECHLER of Pros
pect, nominated for Connty Auditors,
are two worthy and competent men and
we have every reason to believe will l>e
honest and careful auditors of the finan
cial affairs of our county.

so well known that nothing need be
said as to the faithful manner in which
he will centime to perform the duties

etc, 207 in all and 104 necessary.
About sixty members testified before
the bribery committee that ni«ht, and
some of F. W. Leach's promises were
told of.
In the House that day the Creasy, ,
general revenue bill was passed, the ap- '
portionment bill was defeated.
Friday's vote was 35, 34, 10, 5, 5 etc, I
or'loH ii, all no rjuornin, but an end of
the deadlock wan promised for this
That evening R. Foster of Centre J
Co. l>efore the bribery committee creat
ed a sensation. He told, in a clear and
deliberate waj, that Frank Willing
Leach, even before the House was or
ganized, was throwing out lines for
Democratic votes for Mr. Quay, and at
the very same time Mr. Leach and his
associates were assuring their friends
and Senator Quay's friends that they
had plenty of votes to re-elect Senator
Quay, and were only waiting for the
proper time to turn the important trick.
Monday's vote was 11, H, 1, 1, 1, 1, but
21 in all. Humors of all kinds legard
ing the breaking of the deadlock were
cu*ivnt.
On Tuesday the Independent Repub
licans concentrated their wnpa on John
Dalgell, and the vote that day was
Quay 87, Jenks O'J. Dalzell ,"il, 207 in all
and 104 necessary to a choice. Several
members were absent. It wa* the 80th
ballot.
The session of the Bribery Commit
tee that evening was a very sensational
one <(>ne member after another testifi

Frazier, aged about 80 vears.
DANN- At his home in Middle Lan
caster, March 36, 1899, Jacob Dann,

Mr. Dann was taken sick while in
church and died shortly after. He was
born in Germany in 1833, came to this
country in 1840, and was a veteran of
the Civil War.

tal. March 28, 1899, Harry Root, aged

a blacksmith by trade. He was an un
