Tlie Fool's Prayer
The Royal fea«t was done. The King
Sought some new sport to banish
i | care.
1 1 And to his jester cried. "Sir fool.
• j Kneel now and make for us a
prayer."
The jester doffed his cap and bells
And stood the mocking Court before.
They could not see the bitter smile
Behind the jiainted grin he wore.
i He bowed his head, and bent his knee
Upon the Monarch's silken stool.
His pleading voice arose, "O Lord.
Be merciful to me, a fool'
| " Tis not by guilt and onward sweep
Of truth and right, O Lord, we stay!
Tis by our follies that so long
We hold the earth from Heaven
away.
i ' "These clumsy feet, still in the mire,
Go crushing blossoms without end:
These hard, well-meaning hands we
thrust
I Among the heart-strings of a friend.
| "The ill-timed truth we might have
kept,—
j Who knows how sharp it pierced and
stung*
I The word we had not sense to say.
j Who knows how gladly it had rung?
. I "Our faults no tenderness shonld ask.
The chastening stripes must cleanse
them all:
But for our blunders, oh, in shame.
Before the eyes of Heaven we fall.
"Earth bears no balsam for mistakes.
Men crown the knave, and scourge
the tool
That did his will. But thou, O Lord,
Be merciful to me a fool!''
The room was hnshed. In silence rose
The King, and sought his garden
cool.
And walked apart, and murmured low,
"Be merciful to me. a fool!"

The duty of a Mine inspector is to see
that the law pertaining to mines are en
forced. and the lives, health and safety
of the miners duly guarded. Their
business is to look after the interests of
the miners and at the same time be just
and resonable with the operators. But
somehow or other some of the inspec
tors seem to labor under the misappre
hension that their first duty is to get
solid with the operators and protect
their own interests, even to the preju
dice of the miners. The law creating
the mine inspectors did not contemplate
that they were to become the allies of
the operators. Their mission is to
stand between the two and see that the
laws are strictly enforced. Some of
them seem to- understand this, and
others do not. —Ex.
