SATURDAY of this week will end the
unnecessary mid winter campaign that
has been forced upon us by a stuffed
County Committee, and an interested
Chairman.
The county offices are prizes which
should be open to the fair and free com
petition of all our citizens.
We hope that the next County Com
mittee or convention of Return Judges
will be controlled by representative Re
pnblicans of the county.
HARRISBURO.
Thursday's vote was 86, 71, 14. 7, 4, 4,
etc 808 in all, 102 necessary. No
quorum was expected next day, and
until the following Tuesday. Rep
Engler announced his intention of pros
ecuting Costello in the Lycoming Co.
court.
Friday's vote was 85. 24, 11. 6, etc,
103 in all, and Saturday's 8, 7, 1, 1, 17
in all.
It was reported that Quay intended
to seek vindication by again being a
candidate for State Chairman. Gov.
Stone named April 7th and 28th as
Arbor days.
At Monday's joint session but 15
members were present. That night the
Senate resolved that no bills be read in
place after April 2d, and in the House
an unsuccessful effort was made to
place the Bruce Charter bill on the cal
endar.
Tuesday's vote was 88, 75, 17, ft, ft,
etc. 211 in all and 106 necessary to a
choice. In the Senate that day the bill
providing for the publication of a synop
sis of new laws was defeated; Gov.
Stone signed the bill increasing the sal
aries of officers of Allegheny county, i.
e. Couuty Commissioners from S4<HM) to
$6,000; Coroner from £5,500 to $5,000,
etc.
That evening was "general denial"
evening before the Bribery Committee.
Two of the accused bribers did the de
nial act, and one attributed a me?n mo
tive to his accusers.
Yesterday's vote was 98, 75, 18, 7, 6,
4, etc. 219 in all and 110 necessary to a
choice. Resolutions changing the or
der of proceeding were voted down.
The House, after a stormy debate,
adopted the plan of the Bribery Com
mittee to put eyery member on the
witness stand.
HON. JOHN SHERMAN of Ohio, the
venerable ex-Secretary of the Treasury
and ex-Senator, is seriously ill on l»oard
the steamer Paris, which sailed from
New York some weeks ago with a party
intending to make a tour of the West
Indies and visit the scenes of the late
war.
One Kfri Polled Hull.
"At the suggestion of Judge Miller,
the directors of the poor of Mercer Co.,
have added a Red Polled bull to the
stock on the almshouse farm. The an
imal was purchased from a stockman
near Columbus, 0., is considered high
class, and cost delivered in Mercer $lB5.
Judge Miller also bought a heifer from
the same party and a "tax payer" of
that county comments on the transac
tion as follows:
"Despite tbe fact that the mainten
ance of the poor cost Mercer county from
SBO ,000 tot<!.T 000 the past year, the au
thorities purchasf d a fine red bull for
$135, plus sl6 expressage: so fine was
the animal that he and the thororugh
bred heifer for Judge Miller were sent
by express to Mercer. The poor farm
already possesses a thoroughbred Short
horn Durham bull and a fine herd cf
thoroughbred Durham cows, which all
stockmen say are the best adapted cat
tle for a county farm The only per
son who can bred thoroughbred Red
Polled calves by this purchase is .ludge
Miller. The county farm must be sat
isfied with half-breeds, which stock, say
all stock men, will bo far inferior to
the stock now on the county farm.

which onr losses numl>ered fifteen.
On Thursday last a battalion Ameri
cans on a scouting tour were surround
ed and attacked by insurgents whom
they repulsed. The American loss was
one killed and fifteen wonnded.

bad with pneumonia and there is little
hopes of its recovery.
Jim Turner of Butler visited David
Spence and family, Monday.
Newton Lovell has returned from
West Va. That's right Newton, come
home and vote for the good old party.
The District Sknhl was yery well
rendered the house was crowded,
many could not get in so it was con
cluded to have it oyer again on Satnr
day night when the house was full but
as "there was no music, it was consider
ed not so good on Friday night. It was
for the benefit of the Presbyterian
Church. The proceeds netted $l5O.
Mr. Wickman was in the City this
week on business.
There will be Communion services at
the Baptist church. March 26, 1*99.
Mrs. Wallace, of Zelienople, visited
Clay Boggs and family Tuesday.
Mrs. Luton of Apollo died at that
place Tuesday. Her remains will be
brought to this place for burial, which
will be from the Methodist church

from Slippery Rock School Wednesday.

Miss Tina Mickley is home from
Slippery Rock School.
AN order has been issued by the War
department increasing the age limit for
enlistment from 30 to 35 years. The
youngest at which a man can be enlist
ed is IS years. The result so far for the
enlistment of troops is very encourag
ing.
Elcastown Yearnings.
Mrs. H. J. Flenning who has been ill
for some time, is inproving radidly.
James Elliott is now able to be
around again after a severe attack of
La i Grippe.
Miss Nannie McCafferty is going to
teach a select school in the basement of
the M. E. church, this summer.
James Ekas is building a barn. An
drew Ekas is doing the carpenter work.

Daniel B. Ekas who hos been stop
ping at the West Penn hotel, Tarentum,
expects to come to his fine residence in
the West End soon.
Mr. L. M. Brackney of Butler, has
erected a rig on the farm of Mrs. Nancy
Walter, he expects to commence opera
tions this week.
James Hunter expects to farm the Rob
inson Ekas farm this summer, .Tames
is quite an energetic fellow.
Adam Ekas contemplates painting his
house this spring, Adam has an eye to
beauty.
The young men of this place had a
very fine Easter supper consisting of
eggs, cakes, etc. on Saturday evening
March, 18, in Keinder's Hall. Go it
boys while you are young.
A. W. Leasure. our grocery man is
doing quite a rushing busi ness in that
line.
Miss Marie Harvey of Sarversville is
spending her vacation with her annt,
Mrs. Lida Ekas of the West End.
The Epworth League of this place is
in a very Hourshing condition, tliey
hold meetings every Sunday evening
which are very largely attended.
Mr. Ed Walter of the 14 reg't is with
us once more. The girls are all glad to
see your smiling face Ed.
Miss Florence Fleming is spending a
few week with A. B. Ekas and family.
Mr. Joe Fleming has moved into his
new residence on Keinder Avenue.
Mr. T. L. Ekas expects to go to the
city soon to learn the barber trade he
will then open a shop here for the ac
comodation of the boys, Tom has an
eye to business.
The citizens of Buffalo and Clinton
twps are trying to get an independent
school district here.

Free Staffey, has rented the building
where Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Metier lived
when death oyer took them both, not
loug since, and left the house vacant.
He expects to move, in the near future.
They expect Miss Anna Graham
home from Sewickley, where she has
been teaching, on Wednesday.
Miss Maggie Maxwell is coming
home next Saturday from Pittsburg,
her native home is unknown to her of
late year«. except as a welcome visitor
to greet her friends.

RUSSELL —In this place, Saturday |
evening, March 1«, 1899, of cerebral |
meningitis, Orrin M. Russell, aged
45 years.
The death of Mr. Russell was a great j
shock to all who knew him. No citi
zen was looked upon as having a more
robust frame or longer lease of life.
But a dangerous disease siezed him and
he was suddenly taken from among us
He was born and raised in Concord twp. |
and came to Butler some 18 years ago j
and has been actively engaged in the j
production of oil eyer since. Lately he J
has been interested in the Seio, Ohio, j
oil field. It was there, or coming from |
there, that he contracted the complaint j
that ended his useful life, for he was a ■
good citizen and a friend of all good
aims and objects calculated to promote
the good of society.
He leaves a widow, nee Critchlow of
Prospect, and three children. They
have the sympathy of this community.
His remains were laid in the North
Cemetery on Tuesday.
The funeral services over the remains
were held in the M. E. Church and
were yery impressive. The entire cler
gy of the town were present and par
ticipating. Rev. Miller read from the
Psalms; Rev. Oiler lead in prayer Revs.
White, McKeeand Worrell paid most
beautiful tributes to the worth and
character of Mr. Russell, and Rev.
Trapp closed the exercises with a fer
vent prayer. A choir of about twenty
persons rendered very appropriate sing
ing.
SHANNON —At her home in Franklin
twp., Sunday. Mar. 12, 1899, Frankie,
daughter of L B. Shannon, aged 12
years, 10 months and 14 days.
Her remains were buried in the Mi\d
dyc-reek Baptist cemetery, Tuesday.
Frankie took sick on Nov. 12, 1898. just
four months previous to her death. She
had a bad spell of diphtheria in Nov.
1N97. but had reasonable good health'
during the summer.
Drs. Holman. Atwell, Thompson and
McConnell held an autopsy on Monday
and found death was caused by an en
larged liver, weight 14 pounds, also a
tumor in the bowels.
They had watched her fading.
Slowly, like the lily, day by day;
And knew that they, on the brighther
Shore were waiving her away.
For she whispered slowly, softly.
The praises of the Most High;
And murmured gently, lowly,
" 'Tis an easy thing to die "
Mourn not for me beloved ones,
Who guarded me in youth
And kept my wayward feet
Within the path of right and truth.
Oh weep not father, mother dear—
I'm only gone before,
To welcome yon ere long
Upon yon bright, eternal shore.
Weep not, parents dear.
It was done by Him who rules on high,
To Whom there nothing is unknown.
Nor W T hom we dare defy.
God in His wisdom has recalled,
The boon his love had given;
And though the body moulders here,
The soul is safe in heayen.
Obituary Notes.
Alexander Walker, a native of Butler
county, died in Elk City, Pa., February
27th. 1899. He was in his 77tli year.
Jacob Shearer of Buffalo twp., who
was taken to the Polk Institute for
Feeble Minded about a year ago, died
there, Wednesday. His body was taken
to Sarvers Station, today.
Buffalo Pelts.
The entertainment for the benefit of
the Sarver's Station Academy came off
as scheduled on Friday evening last in
the Sarversville hall. In a way it was
a success financially, but owing to the
fact that the building was packed be
yond its capacity and the lack of seat
ing accommodation it was impossible
to keep order so much so that it not only
discouraged the performers but also a
majority of the audience. Among
other things, the Rev. Harper and his
sister sang; Helen Painter captured the
audience with her declaiming "Archie
Dean." Mrs. Black's two little nieces
the Misses Weaver captured the hearts
of everyone in the audience, not only
on account of their ability but their
singular expressiveness in carrying out
their parts. It has bton decided to-hold
another on April 28, 1899. It is prob
able it will be held in the Buffalo
church.
Mr. John Wade is out after his sick
ness and able to take his usual jaunt to
the station.
Old Mr. Sinister is again sick, he is
pow years of age,

town from Friday to Sunday last.
Chas Craig of Freeport blew through
town on Sunday with his handsome
pair.
Charles Drain visited his parents on
Saturday accompanied by his friend
Mr. Logan. Charles lias been working
at Maharg P. O. for Mr. Sutton for al
most three years.
We may have a new blacksmith in
town ere long.
UP in Lackawanna county, where
Dr. Swallow received ninety-eight hunt
dred and forty votes for Governor last
lall, there are this year six hundred ap
plicants for liquor licences and only five
remonstrances have been filed! What

West Liberty School, under the man
agement of Miss Nellie Koch, gave an
entertainment on Monday Evening,
March 13, 1x99. The house was beau
tifully decorated for the occasion, and
was tilled to overflowing-
A long programme was rendered in
cluding songs, recitations, dialogues,
pantomimes, charades, tableaux, and
illustrated reading. Some of the most
interesting performances consisted of
"Little Bo Peep's Party," The Snow
birds"; The Queen May Celebration";
"The Farmer's Kitchen before Christ
mas"; "A Wedding Scene, and Wo
man's Rights": Yery good music was
interspersed throughout the program
by the West Liberty String Band.
A SPECTATOR.
IN a political fight at Hot Springs,
Arkansas, last Thursday, five men were
killed and one wounded.

Mrs. Place, who killed her step-daugh
ter and attempted to kill her husband
was executed. She was the first wo
man to die in the electric chair.
