—The P.-& W. R. R. Co. intends
changing the road near North Oakland

hill and discontinuing the use of the

very dangerous crossing and the people
of the twp. are objecting to the change
—The County Commissioners and
John Watters had a joke on an Evans
City man last Friday. He came here
and fought the assessment for that
town and had $125. added to his own

a talkative "gentleman".

secured a reputation second to

and a host of friends here will regret
his departnre.
Our boys will march through Cu
ba (if it comes to that) wearing shoc-a
furnished by the splendid l>oot and
■hoe house of John Bickel. The shot s
were of double calf, low heeled, wide
toed and in everyway suitable for long
marching. They are strong enough to
wade through mud and turn water;
and springy enough to make the boys
want to jump over all the cocoannt
trees they come to.
—Simple language is preferable to
high sounding words when ordinary
matters are discussed. It does not add
a foot to the statute of a house to call it
a "residence;" a church, or even a meet
ing ho ise is as venerable as "the sacred
edifice;" it is no more genteel to say
"retire" than go to bed, and no more
polite to say limb than leg, when leg is
meant Hainan beings have four limbs,
»wo arm limbs, and two leg limbs. To
which do yon refer when yon say limb?
—The building of the Pittsburg,
Bessemer & Lake Erie railroad has been
of more benefit to the Carnegie Steel

one of the greatest innovations in th->

A Common Mistake.
It is a common mistake people make
in sujjjxjsing that the only object of the
lUisisi'-. > College is to grind out l>r>ok
keepcrs and stenographers. Business
College education is useful to everybody.
The man of wealth cannot tell if his txxjk
keeper docs his work properly unless he
himself understands the science of ac
. -count?. lust as the best housekeeper
i 'need not do the work herself but she
knows how, anil hence knows when it is
properly done. The j»>or man needs
xisiness education to be able to manage
ri.s 'esources to tlie best advantage.

■ 3 Good shoes need no praise, The right shoes sell themselves if i
FA they have a chance to speak for themselves. It's just as easy to f
kl use big words and make extravagant claim? for poor shoes as for <
A goo«l shoes. Rut the selling of the shoes is rather different.
People know good shoes when they sec them. They know poor

i shoe you want and the price you ought to pay. Vou tell us
what you want—we show you whit we have and what the price ,
y is. We leave the decision solely to you. If it weren't for help
ing people try on shoes, answering guestious and making
' change, we wouldn't need any salesmen at all. We only ask
i you to come here before you buy—that's all. Come here first or ►
come here last, its all one to its. But if you buy before you come 4
here, it won't be all the same to jou.
