—The Wuller building, 888 S. Main

larged. When the improvements are
completed it will be occupied by a mil

—Two men who are working on a
contract with the U. S. Government to
paint all the mail boxes a silver color,
were in Bntler Monday and Tutsday
puttting a Bryan tinge on the local
recepticels. They went from Butler to
Meadville, thence to Erie.
—Preparations are being made to en
tertain a big crc wd at the concert of
the Ladies Symphony Orchestra of Bos
ton, which appears in the Park Theatre,
March 4th for the benefit of the First
Ward Hose Co. The railroads will give
excursion rates that day from all sta
tions in the county.
—An army lieutenant who ar rived in
New York on Tuesday was said to be
afflicted with "alcoholic dementia".
Out west they call it jim-jams; in Oil
City it is known as sunstroke; in Mead
ville it goes by the name of "snakes",
and in Bntler it's a rush of rats to the

Earnest Kerl or Carroll, of Zelienople
died in Allegheny, last Monday, from
an overdose of landnnum. He went to
town a week before to collect some
rents, met some acquaintances and had
a good time, and the remorse and mel
ancholy that followed is supposed to
have caused him to take the poison.
—ThiTFranklin News —our newsiest
and brightest exchange- celebrated its
twentieth anniversary last Friday, by
publishing an illustrated edition on
book paper, containing a history of it
self, its town and county; a description
of the Polk Institute; congratulatory
letters, etc. The News is a credit to its
native town, and a great comfort to us

—On Monday of this week a train on
(he P. R..R. was run from New York
to Pittsburg in 7i hours. The distance
is 44b miles, the time 450 minutes.
The Philadelphia divisision of 105 miles
was traversed in 103 minutes, and the
middle division of 132 miles in 123 min
utes and the Pittsburg division of 117
in 129 minutes. On this division six
slowdowns and two stops were made.
The distance from Johnstown to Pitts
burg—79 miles—was traversed in the
same number of minutes, during which
five slow downs and one stop were
made.
This is proof that the 20-hour train
between New York and Chicago, which
the Pennsylvania has been talking of
putting on for some time is a possibil
ity. For that trip the schedule be
tween New Nork and Pittsburg would
be 9 hours, and this is a practical dem
onstration that the trip can be made in
even less tims.

Geo. Witherup was struck on the
head by a falling monkey- wrench at a
well at Glade Run last week and dan
gerously injured.
Mrs. Jos. Criswell of Bntler twp. was
bj'dly bruised and shaken up by falling
down a flight of stairs last week.

against W. H Roesle & Co. for a claim
of $385 rental due on a lease in Jackson
and Cranberry twps.
The Humes Torjiedo Co. has "brought
suit in assumpsit against Wm. Davison
for $129.94 for shooting a well in Ailauis
twp. The rase was first trie<l before
Jacob Keck, J. P. and appealed by tbe
plaintiff.
By order of the Court made last
month a strip of the hill norrhwest of
town was attached to the borough: but
a petition and the appointment of an
Auditor followed that order and an
other order was made delaying the
matter until the Auditor makes his re
iHjrt and the same is confirmed. G*o.
Robinson is the Auditor, and perscns
interested will have to see that the mat
ter is finished.
On Monday Wm. Watson, of Bufiaio
twp., appeared l>efore Court and plead
guilty to a charge of assault and bat
tery preferred by John Altiuan. Sen
tence will be passed March 12.
The Picneer Natural Gas Co. has re
corded its charter. John Pitcajru of the
Pgh. Plate Glass Co. is the principal
stockholder.
Last night Sheriff Dodds received a
telegram from A. M. Bundy, stating
that Peter Russel had got into trouble
with the boss on the "Bessie'' at Jami
sonville, and threatened to blow up the
boarding shanty.
An assumpsit suit of Johan Furer vs
Webster Keasey for $73.92, wages for
digging coal, has been appealed to the
Common Pleas court by the defendant
on judgment given by Benj. Douthett.

issued a summons in assumpsit against
the East Eid Oil Co. for $233, claimed
for shooting wells.
George A. Needle. Jr.. editor of the
Parker Pheonix, has been held for the
March Q. S. by Justice C. E. Anderson
on a charge of criminal libel preferred
by Robt. C. Scott, of Fairview. The
Pheonix published an account of a
fight or two that Scott was in showing
the latter up in a rather bad light,
hence the suits.

Stetson's Big Uncle Tom's Cabin
Company is at Kelley's Front Street
Theater this week. They have all the
accessories for producing the play in the
mast approved style, and were' highly
successful in pleasing the audience. It
is singular how this piece draws, and
how the audience laugh over it. Thee
is no necessity for speaking at length
over the presentation last night. It
pleased the majority greatly. Topsy was
good, so was Uncle Tom, so were Eva,
Marks, the dogs and the singing. It was
a g-xxl entertainment, and the audience,
which had come to laugh, laughed heart
ily and were satisfied. The company
had a double band orchestra, composed
of white and colored musicians, two
Topsies, two Marks, two Orpbelias, Eva
ana her pony the Lone Star
Quartette and African mandolin players;
not excluding Ihepack of savage-looking

hand was caught in a cutting-box and
the daughter stopped the machine by
grabbing the fly-wheel and being taken
aronnd with it, since which time her
heart has been troubling her.
