The Hon. John McOaughey. of Indi
ana. tells a good story at the expense of
his friend William Clawson. of the
Indiana House.
"When "Bill" and I were voting
men," h>' said, ' we nsed to attend all
religions gatherings, and everything
else that wonld give ns an excuse to
get ont with onr girls. I had a mighty
sw<f>r. rosy girl, who is now Mrs Mc-
Qanghey, and l>y some sort of a strange
infatuation which I could never under
stand. one of the finest girls in the com
munity showed a decided preference
for "Bill and afterwards became Mrs
Clawson Well the Baptists were
holding a revival meeting at a country
church on Twolick Creek one w ; nter.
aid there was tojbe an immersion Sun
day. Bill and 1 went, with onr girls.
If was a«cold. blustry day. The water
was high, and great chunks of ice were
l»>ing carried rapidly down the stream
by the swift current
"The converts, who were to be bap
tized together with a crowd of specta
tors. were gathered on the shore of the
raging Twolick. The good minister led
a woman boldly ont iuto the stream,
waist deep. They shivered and their
t»*eth chattered. The minister spoke
the words appropriate to the occasion
and- then thrust her under the ice-cold
water. She arose dripping and shiver
ing, and the minister turned to the
spectators and said:
"Sing an appropriate hymn.
"Nobody seemed to want to lead
off. but as Clawson was always anxious
to help people out of difficulties, al
though his judgement waa often badly
at fault, he began singing, with that
big, barotone voice of his
"Pull for the shore, sailor, pull for
the shore."
"But nobody seemed disposed to help
him. As I was something of a singer
myself in those clays, and didn't want
to see Clawson stick, I joined in with
lusty lungs, and we sang two verses of
"Pull for the Shore.' while the parson
and the woman were wading out
''Ever since that time, concluded
Mr McOaughey, "I have looked upon
Glawson as a man who means well, but
who cannot always be relied upon to
realize at a glance the fine points of a
situation. '

Talk of bad spellings, the druggists
and their clerks see more of them than
any other class. A dmtcgist in an
Eastern city has a collection of (jneerly
written orders for medicine\ Here
are a few samples:
"This child is ray little girl. I sent
yon five cents to bny a witless powder
for a grown up adult who is sike.
Another reads: "Please gif barer
five sense worse of Auntie Toxyn for to
gargle babi's throat and obleage.'
An anxious mothor writes: "Please
send five cents worth of ipecac for to
throw up .a five months old babe.
N. IJ. The babe has a sore stummick."
This one was a puzzler: "Ihave a
pane in my child's diagram. I'lease
give my son something to release it.
Another. My little babey has eat
up its lather n j.aiisli plaster. Send an
antidote as quick as possible by the
enclosed little girl.''
The writer of this one was evident
ly in pain: T had a hot time in my
insides and which I wood like to be ex
tinguished. The enclosed quarter is
lor the extinguisher.
Take advice! Stop coughing at once
by the immediate use of Dr. IJulls

you.
