Work.
I All boys, and frirl* too. should be
tiught the necessity of labor. They |
: -honld early acquire habit* of industry.
! otherwise the slightest task will appear
i burdensome. To a boy reared on a
farm, accustomed to long hours of ardn
! ous toil, the labor attached to a college
1 course is easy. It is rest. To the boy
I brought up in idleness and luxury it is
! wearisome and exhaustive labor. He
has never known what real work is. and j
is consequently easily fatigued.
The manhood of many is ruined by ;
idleness in youth. Boys should taste of
hardships, because greatness and useful
ness consist of energy. In cold coun
tries the bee is the most industrious and
> frugal insect. He spends his summer
hours in gathering honey for winter
use. He is too busy to look up. and re j
gards the butterfly and the katydid
with contempt. But transport the bee j
to a tropical climate, where the flowers
bloom perj>etually and the warm breezes
constantly blow, and that industrious
insect becomes an idler and a profigate. j
He quits work entirely, lives from hand i
to mouth, and acquires the vicious hab- j
it of stinging people for the mere sake
of killing tftiie. Luxury and ease have
the same effect upon a boy.
Learn to work and be happy.

All moralists have assured us that
' when lovely woman stoops to folly,
she stoops very low indeed. And so
when women attempt to emulate the
glories of a Choctaw chief or a South
Sea inlander, it is not considerations of
art or humanity or self-respect that will
stop them, says Natural Science. Con
sequently, it is not likely that the insen
ate votaries of fashion, who disfignre
their heads with baskets of artificial
flowers 'irrespective of the seasoni.viru
lently dyed scraps of ribbon, twists of
steel, and unaturally clipped or colored
bird feathers, will pay any attention to
a paragraph iu a scientific journal.
But we are willing to leave theirrespon
sible half of creation all their chiffons,
their coal tar dyes and their scrap iron,
if only they will leave us our birds.
The rate at which some of the rarest
and most beautiful birds on our planet
are being destroyed to gratify this ex
traordinarv taste can hardly be realiz
el.
It is small consolation to us to think
think that in a few years the price of
these luxuries will be prohibitive, or
that, unless fashion changes in the di
rection of sea weeds or turnip tops,
there will soon be no more birds to de
stroy. Nor can we overlook the ter
rible sufiering involved by this enor
mus slaughter: the young osprey bereft
of their parents left to die in hundreds,
the heron with the plumes torn from
its ba'-k, writhing into death.
If you are overworked and feel sick
ness coming on I>r. Hull's Pills will
surely give you relief and restore yon to
health.
A striking result of asking for bids
for public service was shown in I'unx
sntawney. That town has two electric
light plants, and one of them, under a
five year contract, has lx.-en furnishing
street lights for sixty five dollars per
year per light. The contract will soon
expire, and the Council asked for bids
fur the next five years, requiring each
company to accompany their bids with
a bond of twenty five thousand dollars.
The result has )»<n that the lowest bid
was forty five dollars per light, and a
contract foi five years was made at that
figure, a »aving of one thonsand dollars
per year to the borough.
