THE CITIZMST
A Trip To Alaska.
(Harrisburg Telegraph.)
From what Gossip has been told he
would imagine that Governor Sheakley,
of Alaska, who, by the way, is from Mer
cer county, in this State, is or ought to
be the best satisfied Governor in the
United States. He has no Legislature to
defeat his pet measures or pass bills over
his vetoes, or to trouble him in any of
the many ways in which a con tumacious
Legislature can trouble the Chief Execu
tive. Hu orders are to adopt Oregon
laws where they suit the case, and if not,
to make his own, and a recent visitor
who spent some time in the Executive
chamber expresses the opinion that the
Governor gives himself the benefit of the
doubt. His office is in a arge log house
which formerly was the headquarters of
the Russian officials In one corner of the
lower room is a large Russian stove, so
built into one corner of the room as to
monopolize a large portion of the room
and consume wood to a degree which
would make our Forestry Commissioner
shudder. The F.xecutive clumber faces
the fort and parade ground, and on the
arrival of eve y steamer the Governor has
a fine view of a game of base ball between
the "Steamer picked nine" and an equal
number of soldiers from the fort. The lat
ter, being trained players always win.
The sale of intoxicants is forbiden by
law, but the native Alaskans have a way
of their own of making an intoxicating
drink of fermenting bran, which is noted
for its ability to make the average Alaskan
crazy drunk and ready for any thing that
turns up, and ready to turn up any thing
that comes in his way. It is stated that
those from more southern climes, who
have tried this drink, that it is simply de
testab'e, but then any one who has seen
the Alaska Indian knows that his stom
ach can staud a decoction which would
sicken a mule, and that a c'rink may be
execrable and yet furnish him with all
the exhiliration that his limited comprr
hension cau appreciate. Notwithstanding
this prohibition it is evideut that no small
amount of intoxicants eventually reach
Sitka and other Alaskan ports. Recently
one of the coast steamers was damaged
by running on a rock, and in examining
a large number of barrels of flour w'hich
formed a portion of the cargo it was
found that a nice gallon keg of whiskey
w-as nicely stowed away in the centre of
each barrel and that' the consignment
was intended for one of the Juneau drug
gists who also had a grocery store.
The tourist who remains a few days at
Juneau, one of the largest towns in the
territory, which furnishes all of the
granb jurors for the Sitka courts, is sur
prised to note the large number of drug
stores which line both sides of th<* street
and which indicate that the drug business
must be an excellent one there. Tie
visitor is convinced that it must be very
unhealthy -when the town can support so
many stores of this kind, and his mind
naturally reverts to the piles of fish heads
and other retuse with which the wharf
and shores fre lined, and he connects
them with the excellent character of the
bnsiness. The character of the dirty In
dians who be meets along the street is
another indication of the cause of disease,
which may be the cause of the thrifty
business, but when he is told that a
drink of whisky can only be obtained un
der the shelter of a doctor's prescription,
he can readily exp ain the matter and
1 understand why it pays to be a doctor
and keep a drug store in Juneau.
With all of these inducements Governor
Sheakley is. however, brought face to
face with some disadvantages. During
the summer months he may sit out on the
porch of his Russian log hov.se and read
ordinary print untii it o'clock and can
take excellent photographs at 10 o'clock
at nigbt, In feet he may at any hour of
'.lie night, during the summer, see the
point at which the sun disaopeared and
the one at which the rising sun will re
appear. He may hear the yells of the
Alaskans at the ranch along the shore
of the bay below the little town, or he
may hear the songs of the young Alas
kans at Dr. Sheldon's mission back of his
office" either of which usually received
the maledictions of the tired tourists who
are used to darkniss at 9 o'clock and who
are trying to get the requisite sleep i*i
their staterooms at th-: wharf, to enable
them to climb the glacier the next day.
The Sitka post office is a small wooden
building and the post office lioxes art
built into one of the front windows an 1
op<*n from the out side, so that they can
be opened without troubling the postmis
tress, who sits sewing inside, but as the
mail arrives, as the Governor puts it semi
occasionally, this after all is more of a
convenience than a hardship.
Governor Slieakley may also carry his
drinking water in a Yackatac basket
made of finely woven cedar roots, so nice
ly formed and so closely woven that they
are nater tight and are used by the In
dians to boil tl eir fish and meat in, the
water l>eing heated by hot stones from a
fire nearby. These baskets by the way,
are marve sof skill and show what may
be accomplished under adverse circum
stances aud surroundings. They are
made of finely spii' cedar roots woven
during the long winter evenings and
dyed with vegetable dyes prepared by
the natives, and it is interesting to note
the regularity and beauty of many of
the patterns with each color woven into
the structure wi'li a nicety and care
which forms a harmonious whole and
produces a basket which will comp re
tavorably with any, with the additional
value that it will hold liquids. The
Alaskf n doctor has also improved upon
the methods of his more southern breth
ern, for instead of waiting to be sent for
he starts out into the streets with his
"medicine man" hung on his neck and
it tells him when he comes opposite to a
in which there is anXone sick o- going
to be sick within the next week or two.
If the sick person is found be is speedily
cured by methods onty understood and
appreciated by an Alaskan Indian and
his Squaw.

The engineer and fireman of the Pitts
burg & Western passenger train south
from Kane captured a fine deer alive one
day last week. The train had left Kane
about len miles when they noticed a deer
running a long on the track. They
whistled several times to scare it off the
track, but the dter kept right on and
coming to a trestle its legs fell through
the ties. They stopped the train then
and with the assistance of some of the
passengers caught it alive. Tying its feet
like a sheep they placed it in the bag
gage car and and sent it to Oil City.

Concerning Santa Claus. f
The little f< Iks love Santa Claus j
Much bet'er than the big ones do j
And so they should. For why? Because j
Old Santy seems to want them to.
To little boys and girls he brings
A lot of sweet and pretty things
That fill their hearts with gadness,
But to the old he carries cares,
A few more wrinkles and gray hairs,
And buckets full of sadness.
But when the little faces beam
Witt joy and with affection,
The elder people catch the gleam
Of pleasure's bright reflection.
And they are happy just because
The little folks love Santa Claus.
A Bit of Life.
A maden sat within the door
And sang as many tines before,
A man to daily toil passed by,
No love or pleasure lit his eye,
But when he heard the merry song
He whistled as he went along.
A woman by the window wept
For one who in the churchyard slept,
But when upon her hearing fell
Th; t tune she knew and loved so well.
The flood of burning tears was stayed.
And soon a song her lips essayed.
Her neighbor heard the tender strain
And softly joined the sweet refrain.
Thus all day long that one song bore
Its joyousness from door to door.—
