—The bicycle which a few years ago was
regarded as a fad, has grown by general
use into such tremendous proportions that
the mind can hardly grasp tbe figures. To
supply the demand there are something
like 400 firms, making money hand over
fist, and it is estimated that in the various
plants more tban 925,000,000 is invested.
—"See <,ne circus and you see them all,"
Is the old saying, but it did not hold true
as to the John Robinson and Franklin
Bros shows, which were her* last Tuesday.
The animal* were clean and healthy look
ing, and some of them were novelties here,
the ring performances were excellent, and
some of the specialties were marvelous.
The music was good, the clowns were
funny, and everything connected with the
show was first-clasi. and np-to-date.
—The man who gets into what is called
the building association habit acquires
something that he is never able to shake
off, even if he wants to, and something that
Is always to him a friend in need. Here is
a new building association story that is
simply an objeot lesson lor those who are
struggling along with nothing to look for
ward to. There resides in this town a man
who for years managed U> get along with
out saving a cent, and he was often wor
ried about the hereafter when he sboul
have reached that age when he was no
longer able to work and earn ai much as
he did in the present. He talked the mat
ter over with his wife, and both agreed
that something ought to be d.»ne in the
way of saving if only euough to bury them
and save them from a pauper's grave. One
day the man saw the advertisement of a
new building and loan association about to
•tart, and be wondered if here was not his
chance to do some saving, lie broached
tbe subject to his wife, and she agreed
with him that the time bad arrived for
them to make a start. They bought two
shares in a bnilding association, paying
fifty cents p«r week, and at the end of the
year they fonnd that they had not suffered
any from the expenditure of the money
and bad a little sum laid up in safe hands.
They had had all they wanted on which to
live, and bad not deprived themselves of
anything. It was a revelation to thorn,
and the more they thought it over the
more it impressed them. It was such a
good thing, r.aid the man to a friend, that
my wife and 1 talked it over again and we
decided to take three more shares, which
we bought in due time, and at the end of
the year we took account of stock once
more. It was tbe first money of any ao
count 1 had aaved In tbe fifty years of my
life, and we were both surprised at how
easy it had been saved. As in the first
year, we had a good living, had not depriv
ed ourselves of anything that we needed,
and we had not missed the money -« paid
out. Talking it over we decided to lake
another three shares and we did, and we
have not suffered i>ny inconvenience from
the ontlay. And, my friend, we not enly
have enough to pay funeral expenses, but I
have a well defined idea, that when I die
I will di« beneath my own roof, in a homo
owned by myself.

—All the "traps" in Butler have been
engagod for the great Base Ball Parade of
next Satarday afternoon. The Freeport
boys are to be here that day and the "sea_
son" is to be opened in Butler. There wilj
be a band concert at the park, followed by
the game which will begin at 3:30 P. M
Our boys have been practicing and a good
game can be expected.
—An exchange tells of a young man who
had accompanied bis best girl to chuicb
and excused himself when the contribution
basket was passed to him by saying: "I
haven't a cent; I just changed pants before
I came." The basket was passed on to
the lady, who blushingly rornarked she
was in tbe same fix.
—The corner stone oftbe Campbell Bros,
building on Main St , will probably be laid
this week, and in it (in a copper box made
for tbe purpose) will be deposited sheets of
copper containing the names of all the
employees of the firm of J. G. <fc W. Camp
bell, the first receipted bill made by the
firm in 1835, copies of the Butler papers of
this week, a plate giving the date of the
erection of this building, its owners and
contractor, and other things that will be ol
interest a hundred years hence.
—One who has been keeping tab on the
conduct and chances of the boys writes in
an exchange: Every young boy in town
is spotted, and when vacancies occur in
banks or in other positions of responsibili
ty tbey do not go to those who hang
around public places nor to those wbo put
in their time smoking cigarettes and aping
tbe styles of dudes and mashers, but to
the intelligent lad who has a clenn record
for industry, honesty and sobriety— to the
one who is anxious to do all he can for his
employer. A straight, clean, manly boy
never has to hunt very long for ajob. He's
always wanted.
—IiOST —Mrs. J. G. Kelly of Proapeot
on Tuesday last, lost a small pocket book
or puree between nickel's livery stable of
this place and Prospect. It contained a
roll of bill* around which wan wrapped a
blank deposit check of the Butler County
National Rank. The finder or person who
returns it to me will bo liberally rewarded.

A Big Oil Well
The Hunter & Cummitigs well oil the
Christ Michel farm near Herman con
tinues to be a good producer. The well
was struck on the nth day of April and
made 400 barrels a day; in two weeks it
had decreased to less than itr>; then it
was shot and went up to 400 barrels; it
again went hack to less than ico and
was shot on Wednesday and has lieeii in
creased to 4<x> barrels a day, which it is
doing now. There aie several rigs being
erected on this farm and the indications
are that it will be a paying district.
This paper had better be kept away from
Joseph Liebler, the enterprising insur
ance agent of the Manhattan I<ife Insur
ance Company of New York, or be will
be down there with his full force and in
sure Mr. Michel for $60,000 more. Mr.
Liebler is a wide-awake hustler and he
embraces every opportunity presented to
advance the interests of himself and of
the old and reliable Manhattan Life In
surance Company. Any first class and
responsible man who wants to go in the
insurance business can get a go»xl salary
by calling on Joseph Liebler at his office,

Railroad Talk.
The Board of Directors of the Pittsburg
and Butler R. R. met* in the Carnegie
building in Pittsburg, Tuesday, when >t
was officially announced that the plai.e
and specifications of the road would be
completed and ready for the inspection of
contractors by tne 20tb. F. E. House, of
Pittsburg was elected Chief Engineer of
the road ar.d he will go over the different
routes surveyed immediately.
After the meeting a gentleman wjo is
cenaected with the road and thoroughly
well informed as to its work, but who did
nat desire his name to be mentioned,
speaking on ti.e same subject, sa:<j
"Those engineers who are talking about
the Pittsburg and Bailer railroad coming
to Pittsbnrg by way of New Castle over
the Pittsburg and Northwestern route, are
talking merely to attract attention, I
judge. There is no likelihood that such
a route will ever be considered. In fact,
th* route has never been presented to the
board of directors for consideration.
There has never been any talk among the
directors of any but the one route for the
road on which the surveyors are now en
gaged.
"Three co'ps of scrveyors are now bus
ily engaged between Batler and the Al
legheny river under Wilkins <fc Davidson,
the surveying contractors, and it will be
some time yet before they are through
with their work. In Mercer county the
original surveying corps is now at work
on what is known as the Big Bend route,
by which it is hoped to be able to over
come *he only grade of any consequer.ee
53.8 feet to the mile, near Kreoiis and
Fredonia, By this route the road will run
from Sbenango, near Greenville, and fol
low the old Erie canal towpath at a water
level to the Big Bend in Jefferson town
ship: Mercer county. From Big Bend the
route will be run from Peaisons Mills to
Mercer by following the LacKawannock
creek nearly the entire distance, assuring
an easy grade all the way. From Big
Bond the road would thus ya.-s through
New Hamburg and Delaware Grove, then
east to Pearsons Mills, and. crossing the
Western New York & Pennsylvania rail
road south of Mercer, and again strike the
present roadbed of the Pittsburg, She
nango <fc Lake Erie road, thence over the
same ronte to Grove City and Butler.
"It ia expected that the entire road will
have practically a grade of 40 feet to the
mile for the whole ronte, which is con
sidered a low-grade road. Tne Erie &
Pittsburg road has a grade of about (W to
70 feet to the mile, and the Philadelphia
<t Erie has a 105-foot trade to the mile,
HO you can see the grade on the Pittubnrg
& Butler road in a very easy one. In case
the Big Bend route is adopted in Mercer
county it is likeiy that the old roadbed
will still he Uaed lor passenger and light
freight traffic. By the new route the only
heavy grade on the Pittsburg, Shenango A
Lake Eri.p road at the Fredonia and She
nango bills will thug be avoided. The
surveyor# just commenced work on this
new route a few days ago "

Accident at Mars
A terrible accident took place here on
ii onday morning. A pair of Turks with
preforming bears visited our town aDd
were entertaining the citizens on the
siree's with their performance; when some
one Thinking to have some sport secur-d
several iarge cannon crackers and began
to tnrow them at the bears. One of the
crackers flew wide of its mark and lit
among a crowd of little children standing
on the porch of Thomas Marshall's house,
aud exploded with awful results. Dr. J.
C. Barr's only child about 5 years ol age,
Al. Ziegler's and Win. Link's child were
hurt. The Doctor's little girl was terribly
injured, her one limb was terribly mutilat
ed and torn, aud fear is entertain 3d for
her recovery The other two little ones
art! not so bad, but bad enough. It has
aiwayn been a habit of some of the people
here to make sport on such occasions ind
tu trying to lie smart make fools ot them
selves, and we tru-t in all earnestness,
that this experience and its horriblo re
suits will be a lesson to the citizeus ot
