THE ELECTION.
County.
If Adams S. and Clearfield had sent «n
--ttttM returns to the Prcthonotary's offioe.
we could have presented our readers with
a complete election table this week, but as
it is the vote credited to those precincts is
hearsay.
The whole Republican county ticket, ex
cepting, perhaps, Capt. Bippus who ran a
neck-and nwsk race with Prothonotary
Brown for the office, is elected.
The chances are that Proth'y Brown ut
re-elected. His figures are, Brown, 4,566;
Bippus, 4,484. A friend of Capt. Bippus
makes the figures, Brown, 4,044; Bippus,
4,493.
For Congress Mr. Phillips carries the
county, the vote being about as follows—
Phillips 3,G&7, Gillespie 3,595, McDowell
1,310;— but his vote in Beaver and Law
rence counties is not as large as was ex
pected, and Mr. Gille=pie is elected.
For County Commissioners Messrs. Kis
kaddon, Marshall and Humphrey are elect
ed, and the figures, not including the two
districts mentioned, are about as follows —
Xiskaddon 4,531, Marshall 4,378, Hum
phrey 4,488, Murrin 3,853.
For Assembly Messrs. Thompson and
"Williams are elected, and the figures, as
far as known, are about as follows —
Thompson 4,615, "Williams 4,635, Wash
abaugb 4,160, McKec 4,124. The indica
,tions are that the Legislature remains Re
publican, and Messrs. Thompson and Wil
liams will take part in selecting the U. 8.
Senator who is to succeed Senator
Cameron.
For Sheriff Wm. M. Brown is elected by
several hundred of a majority.
For Register and Recorder Dale has
about 4,729 votes and Keck about 4,300.
For Treasurer Wilson has about 4,876
vote* and Adderhold about 4,058.
For Clerk of Courts Criswell has a major
ity of about a thousand, the largest of the
ticket.
For Auditors Messrs. Douthett and Al
bert are elected, and Mr. Henninger is
claiming a majority of 92 over Hindman.
Kennedy is elected Coroner.
The State.
There is no doubt of the election ot
Pattison by about 16,000. Philadelphia
gavo Delamater a majority of over 20,000,
but it was not enough to save hiai. "Watres
and SJwifart, Delamater's two associates on
ticket, are elected. Crawford
Co., Delamater's home, is Democratic, and
Delamater's ward in Meadville gave Patti
son a majority of 74. Titusville, Chairman
Andrews' home, gavo Pattison a majority
0f382, and Andrews was defeated for State
Senate.
Butler county gives Pattison a majority
of 625. The rest of the State ticket has not
yet been counted.
The Republican majority in the Legis
lature on joint ballot will be 64, and the
Congressional delegation from this State
will be 17 Republicans and 11 Democrats.
Neighboring Counties.
Allegheny county gave Delamater a
majority of between four and five thousand.
Dalzell and Stone were elected to Con
gress, and Neeb and inn to the Senate.
Beaver county gave Delamater a'»out
500, and Lawrence county about 1,000.
Mercer county gave Pattison about 300,
and Venango county 200.
Armstrong county gave Delamater 500.
Clarion county gavo Pattison nearly
2,000, and Westmoreland about the same.
Indiana county gave Pattison about 600.
In Western Ponn'a all the Republican
Congressmen were elected, excepting in
this district, where Gillespie will have
about 2,500 plurality over either of the Re
publican nominees. Iu the four counties
Phillips and McDowell each took over
10,000 votes. There is very little differ
ence in their votes and it will take the
official figures to tell which is ahead.
In Mercer county Hall, Rep., for Assem
bly, and Haywood, Rep., for Prothonotary,
are defeated, and the balance of the county
ticket elected.
Dick Quay got through in Beaver county
by a majority of 185.
MeKean, Warren and Venango counties
all went for Pattison, but Stone, Rep., for
Congress, has a handsome majority.
in Other States.
Outside of the State the most interesting
•lection to Pennsylyanians was that in
McKinley's district in Ohio. In his own
county McKinley overcome a Democratic
majority o( over 1,000, but Holmes county
gave Warwick, his opponent, over 2,000
majority and that did the business. War
wick is probably elected by a small major
ity, though it may take the official count
to decide the matter.
The Republican State ticket of Ohio is
elected, but the Democrats have 14 out of
21 Congressmen.
The New York legislature is in doubt,
with both parties claiming enough mem
bers to elect the next U. S. Senator.
West Virginia is Democratic all over,
and the Democrats eecm to have every
thing in Indiana.
In Kansas the Farmers' Alliance elected '
their Governor and five Congressman. The
legislature, and consequently Senator In
galls re-election is in doubt.
Massachusetts astonished everybody by
going Democratic.
In New Hampshire there is no election
lor Governor by the people, aud the matter
will go to the legislature. Amsden, the
Democrat, has a plurality but not a major
ity.
The Republicans are claiming lowa by
from (ive-to ten-thousand, Nebraska seems
to 1)0 Democratic, and the Democrats are
claiming Montana.
The Democrats of Michigan are claiming
their Governor and the state Legislature.
Arkansas elects two Republican con
gressman, and Brecken ridge is reported
beaten.
The Democrats are claiming Wisconsin,
and Colorado is close.
South Carolina and Georgia are Demo
cratic, of course, and the Democrats had a
walkover in New Jersey.
Congress.
The Democrats will have a large majority
in the next House at Wasgington. The
Republicans sustained their greatest aud
most unexpected losses of congressman in
Massachusetts and in the city of Chicago,
and iu Virginia and West Virginia the
Democrats made a clean sweep. The

The vote on Congreß« in this district is
as follows:
Butler Co. gave Phillips 3,697, Gillespie
3,595, and McDowell 1,310.
Reaver Co. gave Phillips 3,675, Gillespie
3,513 and McDowell 1,555.
Lawrence Co. gave Phillips 2.002,
Gillespie 1,650 and McDowell 2,714.
Mercer Co. gave Phillips 1,200, Gillespie ,
4,404 and McDowell 4,850.
Straggling Election News.
Xo set of men were ever more anxious
for election news and got less of it than
those who were gathered in Mr. Phillip*
office last Tuesday night. Up to nearly
eleven o'clock they were entertained oy
the reading of the .votes of the different
election precincts of Pittsburg, Allegheny,
New York, Albany, and other towns in
the North and East, with a scattering re
turn occasionally from other parts. "Word
came from Ohio that McKinley had carried
his district, and as soon as it was counted
it was known that Pattison had carried
Butler borongh by 307 maj. No word in
regard to the Congressional contest came
before eleven, excepting that Phillips had
carried his own ward in New Castle by 50
over McDowell and 55 over Gillespie. To
wards midnight the returns indicated that
Pattison had carried the state, and later
on that the Democrats had regained con
trol ot the lower House at "Washington.
The crowd dispersed about 2 a. m. little
wiser than when they assembled.

Vermont and Nevada are two States
that show a decrease in population during
the decade. In the former there has been
a trifling absolute decrease, while Nevada
shows an absolute diminution in popula
tion of 17,939, or nearly 29 per cent., leav
ing' it in population the smallest of ail
the States.
EVERYBODY took it for granted that Col.
Thompson was the author, or one ol the
authors, of the political articles that ap
peared in the Record during the campaign
favoring McDowell for Congress, but he
says he was not, and that ho never wrote
a political article for that paper in his life.
General News Items.
The steamship Viicaya on its way from
New Tork to Havana and an unknown
schooner caine in collision on the coast of
New Jersey last Thursday night, and both
sank immediately, carrying eighty one
passengers, noarly all of the crew of the
schooner and part of the crew of the steam
er to the bottom. The collision seems to
have been the result of stubborness on the
part of the captains.
, The latest ghost story originated by the
I enemies of American industry is that the
, tariff increases the cost of gravestones.
It is probable that the citizen who wishes
. to indulge in Italian marble and Scotch
, granite when he builds a memorial to the
departed may hav<<to pay more money
than heretofore for the luxury, but this
country produces some very excellent
granite, nearly equal to any imported, and
a very fino quality of marble, and we have
not heard that the price lists for either j
have shown any advance. The man who
makes a living in America need not feel j
any humiliation at the project of sleeping ,
his last sleep under an American head
' stone, shaped and lettered by American
labor.
West Sunbury.
Ben Scott's smiling face was seen in
town Monday and Tuesday. He came all
the way from Clarion to vote tor Delama
ter and" the whole ticket.
The Mite Society, held at Rev. Breadcn's
on Friday eveniug last, was very interest
ing. The mites amounted to $5.80.
Newton Black, of Butler, gave quite an
interesting talk on Phillips last Friday
eveniug.
A verv interesting entertainment was
given bv" the completing algebra class on
Monday eveniug. They represented algebra
as tieing a great demon, tried, sentenced
and burned him in effigy. The perfor
mances wtre all very good and well re
ceived.
Some of the young seniors of the Acad
emy aro making a great effort to raNe a
mustache, but unfortunately for the mus
tache cold weather is setting iu too soon.
The music department will give ft recital
on Friday the 7tb, to which all are invited.
The play "Forced to the Wall" will be
given on Friday, November 14. Don t fail

She was a daughter of Dr. S. D. Meals,
formerly of North Washington, and a sis
ter of Mrs. R. A. Jamison, of Jefferson

LA 1? RIMER—At his home in Oakland
Twp., Saturday, Nov. 1, 1890, Jacob
Larrhnpr aged about 65 years
WILSON—Mr. Allen Wilson, of Clay Tp.,
aged 36 years, was killed Oct. 20th, 1890,
near ilansfield. l'a., being struck by a
passing train on the P. C. <£ Y. railway.
He lived about three hours.
It was a great bhock to this community
aud a sore trial to the brothers and sisters
left behind.

forth that said decedent made his last will
bearing date the— day of February, A. D
IS7B, duly probated and recorded in Will
book G, page 2">, and directed that the bal •
mice ot his land be sold when his yonogest (
child beoomes of age, and appointed John (
Martin executor of his said will; that John '■
Martin accepted the trust, took out letters
and sold the real estate except that describes
as the balance, but and before the younges-f
child reached full age, and your petitioner
was on the 17th day of September, 1879,
duly appointed administrator cam t. an. ot
said Michael Hamilton, deceased, accepted
the trust, gave bond, took out letters "and has
acted a* such administrator; your petitioner
further represents th"at the youngest child of
.-.aid testator is of full age and has been for
some time; that said testator died seized in
his demesne as of fee of, in and to about
>OO acres of laud in Cherry township, But
ler county, of which there has been sold J
heretofore about 200 acres, leaving unsold ;

scribed as follows, to-wit: North by Mc-
Gregor, east by John Black and Kerr Mc- i

though the said testator directed said land to ,
be sold, he failed or neglected to authorize j
his executor by name or otherwise to sell the )

est child is of full age and that the time ha

testator to be sold and conveyed, and taere
fore prays your honor to make an order au
thorizing your petitioner as administrator of
said Michael Hamilton with the will an- j
nexed, to sell the said land, altogether or in
different part*, not exceeding three, and to j
make, execute and deliver deed, or deeds, as ,
the case may be, to the purchaser thereof, j
or the purchasers, if the same be divided in .
