JL Lively Oay In Butler.
Monday was a lively day in Butler—
what, with the persons coming to Court,
the members of the two committees, and
the candidates, all the trains arriving in
town that morning, were crowded, and
that afternoon the friendliest set Of men
you ever saw assembled in the corridors of
the Court House.
The aotibn of the County Committee in
fjdng the primary for Saturday, May 24th,
ia satisfactory. A number of the candi
dates hare already declared themsolves,
and the canvass has fairly begun.
With the raising of the salary of the Co.
Commissioners to $3.50 a day, all the
offioes in the Court House are now worth
having. The three best are those of
Sheriff, Register <k Recorder and Prothon
etary, and the poorest that of Clerk of
Courts.
These offices are the free gifts of the
feople of the county, whose servants the
•iAoers are, and it is the right as well as
the duty of the people to see that honor
able, capable and deserving men are elect -
ed to fill them. To this end each voter
ahonld weigh the merits and claims of each
candidate carefully, and the candidates
themselves should treat their competitors
*—- AHIIT- If you know of defects in the
eharsoteKHr record of an opponeut let
aemebody else tell them.
For the legislative and representative
the men selected should not only be
capable, but they should be thoso willing
to put personal interests aside and look to
the interests of the whole community.
The men who make the laws should be
ef as good judgment and as fully informed
. as those who execute them, and the man
who serves the people best is the one who
ahonld be promoted.
AT Des Moines, lowa, Tuesday, Wm.
B. Allison was re-eleoted to the IL 8.
Senate.
THE County Auditor's Report appears
fa ear columns this week. It came in
late and we have no time for extended com
ment, but a glance at the nummary will
show you that there are twenty thousand
dollars in the treasury, and that if ail Uw
moneys due the county were collected and
all its debta paid, there w-ould be over five
thousand more in the treasury. In other
the ooonty is $23,000, ahead.
Meeting of the Republican Co.
Committee.
The Committee met in Carpenter*' Hall,
Butler, at 11 a. m. with about thirty mem
bers present. A few of the members did
not arrive in Butler in time, and a few did
not notice that the time of meeting had
been changed from Ip. m. to 11 a. m; a
change that had been made on account of
Court meeting at 1 p. m.
Chairman Bell called the meeting to or
der, Levi M. "Wise, Esq., acted as Secreta
ry, and the following business was trans
acted. On motion of P. W. Lowry, Esq.,
the time for the primary was fixed for Sat
urday, May 24th. between the hours of 1
and 7 p. ui., the Return Judges to meet in
Butler on the following Monday, time and
place not mentioned, carried unanimously.
Mr. Ensminger made a motion to the ef
fect that the primary tickets should be so
printed that the Republicans of the county
should have an opportunity to manifest
their choice for -Governor. This motion
was discussed, voted upon and lost.
A committee consisting of Messrs. Cald
well (Chairman), Lowry and Robinson
was appointed to see about securing an
other election district for Parker twp »
Morgan's store being mentioned as the
place for voting.
The meeting was short and harmonius,
the Committee was in session but half an
hour and no dissatisfaction is expressed
with the proceeding, though the idea of
printing our primary election tickets in
such a manner as to give the party a
chance to express itself on Governor and
U. S. Senator; is one that Will probably
grow in favor.
NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES.
A young lady of Tarentum is very fond
of onions, but as she is good looking, amia
ble and popular, she understands her duty
to society too well to indulge iiv the savory
but odoriferous root. Every now and
then, however, her appetite gets too much
for her and she goes on a regular onion
drunk, so to speak, eating a dozen or two
oftho tear-drawing vegetables. On such
occasions she retires to her room a day or
two and is dead to the world and her best
young man until her breath is again com
petent to appear in good society.
Warren, Pa., elected two ladies school
directors at the late election. Reports do
not say what tickets they ran upon, but if
the 104 plurality for Harrison in 1888 is
any indication, we rather guess it was on
the Republican ticket.
It is told of a Carbon County man that
he has worn the same hat for twenty
three years, and he says it has come into
style nineteen times.
Nathan Brown, of Emlenton, in step
ping off a Yalley train at Poxburg one day
last week, fell under the car> which passed
over his right leg at the ankle and other
wise injured him.
The steamer IT. If. O'Jieill, of Pitts
burgh, is en route to New Orleans with a
tow 775 feet long. It comprises 12 deep
coal boats, 10 barges and 7 fuel flats, to
gether containing over 750,000 tons of
coal. The width of the tow is 260 feet.
The County Auditors of Clearfield county,
have created considerable excitement in
official circles by surcharging tbo county
Commissioners the sum of $725,11, divided
as follows: G. I. Thompson, $246,77; Jas.
Savage, $274,07; Jacob Mock, $204,27. The
auditors insist that the amount was im
properly paid to the Sheriff, Prothonotary,
court reporter, District Attorney and
other officers. ThfJ Commissioners publish
a statement saying that the amount sur
charged was paid on bills approved by
the Court or the attorney for tho county.
There will be some lively times before the
affair is adjusted.
A Berks county school teacher has hit
upon a novel idea in teaching. He liter
ally pounds knowledge into the pupils.
The other day he gave a girl four words to
spell, and when she failed to do so he
spelled them on her back with a rattan —
that is, for each letter, as he pronounced
it, he gave her a cut. The friends of the
girl should have taken the teacher out and
spelled a few words on his back. They could
have cut on his cuticle "multitudiuous
ness," "hydrocephalus," "incomprehensi
bility," and a dozen or so other lengthy
words, and taught him a lesson he would
never havo forgotten.
There is one Berks county farmer who
has settled the tramp question to his
satisfaction. A few days ago two tramps
appeared at his house and begged for
something to eat. They were offered food
provided they would cut a pile of wood
first. Now you might just as well ask a
tramp to take a bath as to cut wood, and
the gentlemen of the road were highly in
dignant at the request, so much so that
they became abusive and one of them
drow a revolver. Then up rose the sturdy
farmer and with a club he lambasted the
two tramps until they yelled for mercy,
and to wind up a good day's work he took
them before a Justice of the Peace, who
sent them to jail for trial. This is the
easiest solution of the tramp question, but
tho great difficulty is that the farmer is
not always around, and tho tramp intimi
dates the women folks into giving him
whatever he wants.

A "Slick Un" Killed.
That was a quickly settled affair in Kan
sas last Saturday.
Just before the bank at Valley rails
closed that evening, a stranger, looking
like a farmer and 'with his throat muffled,
presented a check for payment, and with
tho cashier's permission took a scat behind
the railing to warn himself. He occupied
his seat (jpietly until the cashier went into
the vault, and when the cashier turned to
come out he pointed two revolvers at him,
demanded SIO,OOO, and threatened to close
the vault doors, which meant suffocation
for the cashier. The cashier handed him
$2,800, all the money in tho cash drawer,
which the robber pocketed and after lock
ing the doors departed 3nt he forget to
removo the key of the front door, and the
cashier got out an d telegraphed the rob
bery in all directions. At Meridian, a few
miles distant, just as tho operator finish
ed reading a description of the robber, he
looked up and the man was standing be
fore him, inquiring regarding the hotels
and trains. The man went to a hotel and
the operator notilied the police, who had
the man called during the night, and when
he resisted shot him down. The money
was found on his person, and the Coroner s
jury exonerated the officers.
The Influenza Fiend.
(BY WILLIE T. M'CANDLESS OK PROSPECT.)
I thought the Grippe was nothing but
A little cough or sneeze
And every little cold I'd get.
Me, of the Grippe they'd tease.
At last old Grippe got hold of me,
And held me fearful tight.
He got me in his clutches, and,
He held mo over night.
We tried all kinds of medicine,
To make old Grippe let loose.
But he had a firm hold of me,
And held on like the Deuce.
I'll tell you what he's got a grip.
I tell you what its true,
And if he once gets hold of you,
You'll wish it was not you.
Old Grippe he is no fool either,
And he does his work right,
For when he once gets hold of you,
lie holds on with his might.
Old Grippe is a patient fellow,
And takes them as he goes.
I hope to mercy when he's through,
He'll sink into repose.

Scrofula
Probably no form of disease is so generally dis
tributed among our whole population as scrofula.
Almost every individual has this latent poison
coursing his veins. Tho terrible sufferings en
dured by those afflicted with scrofulpos sores
cannot be understood by others, and their grati
tude on finding a remedy that cures them, aston
ishes a well person. The wonderful power of
Hood's Sarsaparilla
In eradicating every form of Scrofula has so
clearly and fully demonstrated that it leaves no
doubt that it is the greatest medical discovery of
this generation. It is made by C. I. HOOD A CO..
